Veal Isn’t Going Anywhere
Scal. Photo. CelticsBlogTo follow up on Andrew Katz’s post on who the Celtics should cut to get their roster down to 15, it looks like Veal Scalabrine’s job (amazingly) is safe. This morning CelticsBlog has a post quoting Danny Ainge in the Boston Herald as saying, “I have no intention of cutting Scal.”
Thankfully, the decision has nothing to do with the shape of Scal’s brain, but instead has everything to do with using Scalabrine’s salary in potential trades. From CelticsBlog:
Barring some kind of trade, Scal is going to be somewhere on the roster this year.
As Bulpett explains in the column, it isn’t so much a matter of the team being unwilling to cut a guy making $6M over the next two years. They simply want to have him on the roster in case they come up with a trade where they’ll need to match salaries. Keep in mind that if you combine Scal, Eddie House, and Tony Allen, you get $8.7M in expiring salaries in 2010 without having to ship out Ray Allen. I’m just sayin….

Thats my boy Blue says:
Article in the boston globe today saying that if the Scal, Tony Allen, Ray Ray and House are let go (highly possible) Celtics could be in on the D-Wade/LeBron stakes.
Would an old Pierce, old Garnett, Rondo be good enough supporting cast for Lebron or is it even possible that he would consider the celtics? Pierce could move to the 2.

This is probably the most useful Scal has been in his entire Celtics career! I would love to see a trade where he is involved but I’m not sure one will be necessary this year unless someone gets injured.
Anyone see the new dunk from Bill Walker? It was off a bricked layup by Scal, of course…

Think of Scal as a Mascot and you’ll hate him less.
He’s not really on the team to play – just to be a token red-headed irishman in a celtics uni. top o’ the morning to ya!

Dave says:
Scal did a good job for the Celtics when he started in KG’s absence in the middle of the season last year. Good utility player to have at the end of your bench. Good choice to keep him around.
Plus his contract will be useful in trade negotiations – matching salaries when packaging some youth.
