Warriors Could Kill All of Monta Ellis’ Contract

Monta EllisMonta Ellis, Dime #44

According to the Sacramento Bee, Golden State Warriors management might ramp up the 30-game suspension they’ve already levied against Monta Ellis, depending on how his recovery goes:

*The Warriors are retaining the option to extend the 30-game suspension of guard Monta Ellis, possibly all the way to voiding the six-year, $66 million deal he signed in July. Golden State would only throw that switch if Ellis struggles mightily to recover from an ankle injury that is now expected to sideline him until December or January, and even then would be a tough call, probably in summer 2009 at the earliest. He turns 23 next weekend, and players have come back from much worse. It’s just that the W’s don’t want to be on the hook for $66 mil for damaged goods, since Ellis violated the contract by riding a moped and then lied to management by claiming he got hurt in a pickup game. In the unlikely event the deal is voided, Ellis would be waived but not go back to his previous status as a restricted free agent in a negotiating advantage for the Warriors. He would be unrestricted.

Like it says, totally voiding the contract is unlikely, but the fact that’s even out there is significant.

Man that would be cold, and vicious, to happen to Monta.

  2. patrick says:

I hope they do void it. Monta will kill on a team with a legit big man and some shooters. Pipe dream, but come on suns.

Jason Williams part 2. Only much smaller and cuter. The vehicle, not the player.

  4. Big V says:

That would suck horribly for the team and for Monta, but hey, it’s all business. And he had no business being on a moped, much less busting his ass and messing up his ankle.

That said, I’m no doctor, but hopefully this isn’t something that a 23 year old can rebound from.

Damn! That is cold hearted. A mistake like that could happen to anyone. It is not like dude, went to a strip club and shoot up the joint.

Organizations always do what is in their best interest but the League, organizations and so called fans want the player to do what is best for the organization. No one has the players’ best interest at heart. That is why I do not get upset like these so called pundits and “shit for brains fans” talk crazy when a player holds out for money, demands a trade or just straight say “fuck you” to a ball club. You have to look out for yourself because it is obvious, no one is looking out for you.

I’ve heard all the things said about NBA players are people too and they should be able to do the kind of things anyone else can do, but obviously riding a motorcycle/moped is an extra health risk. These guys get paid millions of dollars based on being healthy players. I think it would be great is the Warriors voided his contract, that would send a real message. These guys can do any crazy ass thing they want to, after they retire. While you have a contract, adhere to it.

What the hell is GS thinking? They already suspended dude, plus they pissed off Mullin & Nellie by doing so. Next year they will be irrelevant once again.

Doesn’t DIME have any other photos of Monta? With the warm-ups and button-up it reminds me of elementary school photo day where you only had to look nice from the waist up.

Lol, I said it a few days ago but they do gotta stop running this suspect picture of Monta, he looks like he plays back up bass for The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

The Warriors need to come off it though, at least he didn’t pull a Cedric Ceballos Jet Moto move.

  12. Jeffrey says:

It would be crazy to void the contract and cut him. They would be screwed six ways to sunday and become a lottery team again. Oh Well, I wonder if Geico or Statefarm has coverage for moped injuries

  13. QuEsT??? says:

@ spiff i was thinking the same thing lool

  14. weng santos says:

Void it, Warriors! Get checkbooks ready, Nuggets! Then trade Iverson for a solid big while he still has value!

Come on guys, get it together! Don’t let me down! =)

  15. Mike says:

Here’s the real story behind Monta’s moped accident.

…in considering the gas crisis, he chose to ride his moped to his skydiving lessons. As he was in route to his destination, he started to day dream about the movie “Torque” which excited him to a point where he mashed the breaks and flipped over the handlebars. Ironically, he didn’t get hurt during this process. As he pulled himself off the groud, he walked over to the moped and kicked it repeatedly injuring his foot and ankle.
