We Reminisce: 1997 NBA Dunk Contest
This is why Kobe Bryant won’t answer the fans wishes and ever enter another All-Star Weekend dunk contest. In his rookie year — and in what was the last dunk contest before David Stern iced it until Vince Carter came around — Kobe took the crown, beating out a field that included Ray Allen, Mike Finley, Bobby Sura, Darvin Ham and Chris Carr. If you remember, this was back when every time Kobe did something the cameras panned to his prom date Brandy in the crowd.

I forgot how nice Mike Finley was. And it’s good to see a Jesus Shuttlesworth appearance.

its funny how players’ games change over the course of their career. Right now it sounds dumb to have Finley, Ray Allen, and Bobby Sura in a dunk contest. But back then, that was their game.

This was when Bobby Sura still had good knees? I didn’t know he could jump like that. Rofl! And who the hell is Chris Carr?

JHov says:
Hey Austin the real reason Kobe won’t ever compete in a slan dunk comp again is because he’s 30 and he’s played in over a 1,000 NBA games! I think his best dunks are behind him..but why won’t “Bron-Bron” do it???

lebron doesnt belong in a dunk contest, else he’d look as dumb as amare did who had to bring nash in the drain with him. ditto with guys like k-mart who dunk with power and tenacity enough to tear off the rim, but not with enough showmanship and flair.
maybe people should start doing a “crowning” contest in where they get the league’s best dunkers, and best shot blockers to go at it.
if the dunk is made, money goes to the dunker. if it’s blocked ala g-money on al harrington, you know the deal.
vince is still the best dunk artist out there. he should jump to the globetrotters.
