We Reminisce: David Robinson drops 71 to win scoring title

In what would be the 7-footers version of David Thompson and Iceman Gervin‘s legendary duel in 1978, David Robinson and Shaq went down to the wire to decide the 1994 NBA scoring title. On April 24, the last day of the regular season, Robinson needed a monster effort to secure the crown, and he responded by dropping 71 points on the Clippers. In 44 minutes, “The Admiral” went 26-for-41 from the field, including one three, and 18-for-25 from the line. He added 14 rebounds, five assists and two blocks against L.A.’s front line of Dominique Wilkins, Loy Vaught and Bo Outlaw. Shaq, meanwhile, posted 32 points and 22 boards against the Nets in his last-ditch effort, and at the end of the day Robinson got his scoring crown, averaging 29.8 points per game.

Shaq, tell me how David Robinson’s ass tastes…

  2. that's whats up says:

    like chocolate

  3. that's whats up says:

yeah, and there was no hate against D-Rob for the 71, unlike Kobe going for 80

  4. Ian says:

    fav player everrrrrrrrrrrr
second best game i have ever seen
(best being the 99 conference finals the sean elliott three pointer vs the blazers)

    @post 1
    fuck yeah

  5. Ian says:

    thats what up
u know david had the good boy rep unlike kobe
hey if grant hill takes 300 shots in a game to score 100 no one will be pissed at him

  6. Ian says:

he still found time to dish 5 assists

  7. Kudabeen says:

    DO NOT FORGET:

David Robinson is 1 of 4 (i believe) to EVER recorded a Quadruple Double…That is sicknin’…Mr. Robinson was demi-god before the Knees/Back went and Shaq Came…

  8. isotope says:

yeah and people still want to argue that Shaq is better than Hakeem. Yeah right.

  9. isotope says:

    Hakeem had 2 quadruple doubles

  10. Jim says:

There was plenty of hate for this…it pains me to see “good Dennis” who wasn’t always around for the Spurs when they were doing something besides drumming the Clips on the last day of the year.

  11. Kudabeen says:

Vinny Del Negro was on this squad…

You think he will let Ben Gordon go Ape-$#!% in order to get a good contract??

  12. JDig89 says:

Lol… old school spurs with the turquoise, pink, orange logo is legit.

  13. Kudabeen says:

Hakeem indeed did have two, but the NBA only officially recognizes 1.

If we can’t recognize that Wilt and Bill Russell are the all-time Blocks and Rebound leaders, then I will only refer to what is official…

Good find though. That’s crazy that they went back through the tape found that Hakeem had 10 assist and the NBA wouldn’t acknowledge the feat…What was that about? Was he too muslim to be recognized?? I’m not saying, but I’m saying…

  14. Ian says:

    jim
i hated dennis on the spurs

    iso
i dont think shaq is better than a hakeem david wilt or moses maybe over kareem and russell but thats just me

  15. Michorizo says:

I messed around and got a quadruple double once.

  16. Kudabeen says:

You soundin like Cube on that one…nice

  17. Kudabeen says:

    Ian:

You think David, Moses and Shaq are better than Bill Russell and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar!?!?!?

    Madness

  18. Ian says:

hell yeah kuda and russell is not even debatable for me that soft blocking shit and by far the worst one offensively of the group wouldnt cut it now. dont say its madness is just an opinion kareem the thing is (i only saw the end of his career am not that old) i dont know if he can keep up with the speed that david and hakeem had.

  19. Ian says:

why did u mention david moses and shaq as the madness and not hakeem bro he isnt ahead of david and moses hes on par with them

  20. Diego says:

Nevertheless, pretty weak front court competition for him in that last game–with Bo covering him on some buckets? He only had 71?

  21. Ian says:

    diego
    u 71 is 71 in the nba

  22. AY says:

please also reminisce hakeem raping pussy robinson until he begged for mercy in the playoffs; P-rob had less heart than tinman. he was never better than rasheed wallace.

  23. that's whats up says:

whoooaaa – I draw the line at post 22. FUCK THAT NOISE.

Hakeem beasted D-Rob in a playoff series but Robinson manned-up, admitted he got owned, learned from that shit and then got two rings of his own (equal to Hakeem), then retired winning his last game to get that second ring….. not on the BENCH in mutha-fukkin’ Toronto like “The Dream”.

Hakeem wishes his last season, on the BENCH, in mutha-fukkin’ Toronto, was a Dream

  24. isotope says:

Yeah too bad Hakeem’s team didnt tank the season just to get a #1 pick in Duncan. It was obvious that team was Duncan’s and not Robinsons. Lets not get carried away.

Even the “arguably” (LOL) greatest NBA player finished his career with the Wizards. It doesnt make him any less of a player.

  25. Ross says:

If this was the last game of the season, shouldn’t The Admiral have been resting for the playoffs?

  26. Ross says:

Wasn’t this game in LA? There were so many people cheering for Robinson, it seems like they wanted him to beat Shaq.

  27. Kudabeen says:

    Ian:

    Big Man order for me:

    Wilt
    Russell
    Hakeem
    Kareem
    Shaq
    Duncan
    Moses
    Walt Bellamy
    David Rob
    Ewing

I called it madness, because to start if you haven’t seen enough of Kareem to give him his due how much of Wilt, Moses, and Russell have you looked in to?

Madness is what it is in my world. In your World it’s Normal to rate the greatest winner of all time in all sports 5th or 6th at His Own Sport at His Position…

    Different Strokes…

  28. Ian says:

lol ok its madness in my world what u r sayin

    wilt
    duncan
    moses
    hakeem
    david
    shaq
    kareem
    russell

walt and pat are a bit behind than the others
i mentioned kareem cuz i dont know the way he moved is like he couldnt guard the others

    AY
    u talking crap my man
u bet u didnt see a game of that series
i think that if hakeem singled covered david like david did hakeem they would end up cancelling each others that 95 series was not admirals fault when u have del negro as your sg u cant do much.

    isotope
tank??? the spurs didnt have the worst record they got kinda lucky sorry celts fan.

  29. AY says:

    ian

actually i saw that series, as well as this game where P-rob destroyed a clipper team that was out of the playoffs and was perfectly content to be embarrassed. believe it or not, i really liked P-rob until duncan got on that team and he immediately gave the team over to him. I was okay with P-rob being a 7 foot shooting guard posting up less than avery johnson, i was fine with P-rob not being a leader of any type, i was fine with rodman defending hakeem in game 6 in closing moments because P-rob was tired of being beat. But if you know that you’re not very good and will let a rookie have your team, then there is no reason for me to think you’re any good.

and don’t blame vinny del negro, i’m pretty sure sean elliot and the rifleman were both on the spurs at the time, vinny wasn’t the only shooter.

  30. GEE...Hooligaaaaaaanss! says:

Dream still the better. David was straight though.

  31. justice says:

If someone told me robinson takes it in the ass from karl malone i would believe it, my gay dar is on alert anytime i see him and rodman together, suspect…down low brother possibly…lmao

the clippers are a sad sack of shit look at their fans

  32. Ian says:

    AY
well all that u wrote is not true but u can think anyway u want about a player
byt trust me ewing or hakeem would give their left nut to end their careers the way the admiral did playing with duncan.

    the rifle man really???????
u cant say u watch the series when anyone that saw it can remember that the rockets double and tripled david in every time he touched the ball cuz of the crappy way the others played the spurs couldnt afford to do that.

u think that if the rockets got duncan hakeem wouldnt have stepped aside??? or ewing???

  33. Jim says:

Never better than Rasheed…how can you get past this post, seriously.

  34. Ian says:

    gee
i have him over david in my ranking but one after the other

  35. Gerard says:

Why hate on David Robinson? This is one of the greatest citizens the league has ever seen. Hakeem dominated him that series, but at his peak Robinson was still a force, both in the paint and out of it. He rebounded, blocked shots, and did everything a big man is supposed to. Don’t question his heart because of one series. The man got beat, gave Hakeem his due, and still went on to have a great career.

  36. GEE...mobile says:

Ian i got it the same.

  37. GEE...mobile says:

Ian i got it the same. i wish them cats were still young to get after some of these youngins

  38. Ian says:

gee no center today can play the admiral or the dream they had everything

  39. kowtz says:

Not hatin though.. this game was none bearing… ang the spurs like commited 4 fouls a minute in the closing minutes just to get a posession back for D. Rob.. that is forced y’all…

  40. Dave says:

No one mentioned this, but there was a lot of hate between Shaq and D-Rob at the time. Something to do with D-Rob stoning Shaq for an autograph, back when Shaq was in high school in TX.

This is one of the first games I personally watched, where I felt the outcome was less than honest. There was not only a lot of hate from D-Rob, but plenty of anti-Shaq feelings out there, due to his rapping, perceived lack of respect for established players, etc.

I still believe that D-Rob was set up to score just enough to edge Shaq for the scoring title.

  41. Ian says:

    dave
of course david was set up why wouldnt u give it a go its the last game and the scoring title on the line
shaq and david dont like each other

  42. Heaven Is A Playground says:

D-Rob was a great player, and I’m glad he got his two rings. Anyway, The Dream took D-Rob to school, and I felt really bad for Dave. But, damn the Dream gave D-rob the business, and watching the Dream go at dave like that was something special. “Never underestimate a heart of Champion”, and that’s exactly what the Dream had, he had a ton of heart. And as time went on Dave had a heart of champion too.

And fans shouldn’t sell dave short on his two rings just because timmy came along and helped him win. Shit, David was a beast in his prime, it was too bad he a had a nut like Rodman on his team. Seriously though, The Worm messed up the Spurs chemistry. All I ever use to hear about was Rodman getting to some of kind trouble. Oh well, Rodman went on to win with Jordan, and Robinson went on to win with Tim Duncan, funny how shit works out sometimes.
