Yao or Bynum?
Yao MingDuring TNT’s Celtics/Cavs pre-game show, Charles Barkley brought up an interesting argument:
All things considered, who would you rather have on your team — Yao Ming or Andrew Bynum?
Kenny Smith argued that two years ago, Yao would be the easy pick, but today it’d be closer. Barkley seemed to think Bynum would be the easy pick today. Who would you take?

Dime Magazine says:
I go Bynum. At this point, his upside is way higher. Yao can’t get through a game any ore without getting hurt.

dagwaller says:
…so Bynum missing the entire second half of last year doesn’t scare you, “Dime Magazine”? Give me Yao.

Austin Burton says:
I’d take Yao right now.

QuEsT??? says:
this aint even a contest, both are injury prone and yao is still way better than bynum

At gunpoint I’d go with Yao, but I could argue it Bynum’s way too.

maybe bynum eventually but he hasnt done shit yet besides half a good season…yaos put together like 6 good half seasons so yao now

dagwaller says:
Seriously. I am VERY pumped for Blazers/Lakers, and the video about Bynum’s workouts was good; I don’t dislike Bynum. However, Yao is maybe the second best center in the League (behind Dwight Howard - probably/maybe).
Meanwhile, Bynum has had exactly ONE HALF OF ONE SEASON where he was anything but mediocre. Andrew Bogut has accomplished more, which is not to knock Bogut, but if anyone asked “who would you rather have, Bogut or Yao?” it wouldn’t be close. I understand why people like Bynum (especially after that sick reverse dunk he had last week), but i DON’T understand why people think he’s the GOAT already.

Austin Burton says:
If Bynum played for the Bobcats or Pacers or Wolves, this wouldn’t be an issue.

Trey says:
Charles Barkley has been a YAO hater his whole life - and all that got him was a chance to kiss a donkey. Seriously - it’s not even close - Yao by a mile. Bynum’s got potential, but missing half a season at his age probably makes him worse injury wise than Yao. Then look at the numbers - it speaks for itself.

dagwaller says:
Hahaha, Austin, I’m sure that Al Jefferson, Roy Hibbert and Emeka Okafor agree with you.

Give me Bynum, Yao softer than a faggot at the the playboy mansion.

K Dizzle says:
So do I want the 28 year old who misses half a season for the past 3 seasons or do I want the 21 year old who’s been injured once?
Normally, it would depend on the team. If you got a slasher/playmaker like Kobe, DWade, Bron, TMac, Joe johnson, B-Roy, CP3, D-Will, then I’d take Bynum cuz I feel he’ll be a better rebounder/defender/shotblocker who I can just throw lobs to. If I need a low post scorer, I’d take Yao. As it is, I’m a Laker fan and I’d rather have the young kid with one serious freak knee injury comin down on a foot, rather than the chronically hurt veteran who’s played 57, 48 and 55 games the past 3 seasons with the multiple leg issues.
Better question would be Bynum or Chandler? If Yao came in as a 17 yr old with a Kobe Bryant on his squad, this would be cool, but the players are different, they injury histories are different, their games are nothing alike and they 8 years apart in age. One injury in your 3rd year means jack. Didn’t Jordan have a major injury and how’d that work out?
Damn near goofy that the same guys who say Yao because of Bynum’s knee injury conveniently forget that Yao hasn’t had a healthy season in 3. Ask me again in 5 seasons when AB’s 25.
Off the soapbox cuz the Laker game back on

I hope Bynum grows past him though.
Is “House of Payne” really the #1 cable show of all time? Seriously??

ju ju says:
@13
i’d take chandler over bynum now…tyson’sproved himself as a above average rebounder and defender compared to bynum…then again bynum has more offensive skill to make up for it
October 28th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
dagwaller says:
Good points, K Dizzle.
You could just as easily look at their injury histories in the opposite light. Yao was healthy for years before he got hurt. So Bynum has started getting injured ALREADY, while Yao showed that he could be healthy.
And my point remains: you’d rather have the “less injury prone” (if we grant you your assertion) average player than an injury prone elite player? Hm. How many mediocre centers have won NBA titles?
October 28th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
nick says:
bynum. yao has been the focal point of the team for yrs. bynum was a 3rd option plus dude is still only 21.

Not even close, didn’t even know it was still running until the nba season started again.
As for the question Yao or Bynum, Sir Charles has been dipping into Lamar’s stash apparently. How can you not take Yao? Bynum MIGHT be a LITTLE better on sometime in the distant future, but that’s a HUGE maybe. As AB already said, if Bynum weren’t playing for the Lakers, this wouldn’t even be a discussion worthy of discussing over even one piss warm beer.

doc says:
Shit, put Bynum in a Philly jersey ill say he better than Yao.

heartbreaker85 says:
a decade ago- when the game was slower and teams actually had legit power forwards and centers on the court at all times, yao would have been dominant.
but since today’s nba calls for athletes, you have to go with the quicker, stronger dude named bynum whom if we’re going to use half the season he played, looks like a patrick ewing (minus the jumper) to dwight howard’s shaq.
im waiting for mr. oden though

Ian says:
this isnt even close
yao 25 and 10 everyday
bynum might be good
gtfoh with this shit barkley i remember when the rockets drafted yao sir charles said yao will NEVER score 20 in a game . guess what fat motherfucker he avgs that. yao is one of the 2 best centers today anyone that says otherwise is full of shit
yao or bynum pleaseeeeeeeee give me bogut or camby or chandler over bynum also.
control is right if bynum played for the sonics last season no one would be talking about him. the rockets would laugh their ass of if this trade was proposed.
nick
what u posted doesnt even make sense if u r defending bynum. yao score 25 with everyone of him bynum gets his feeding of others if bynum were the 1 guy he wouldnt have it as easy.
austin u r right man
jefferson is 1000 times better than bynum but since he plays in minny no one cares.
October 29th, 2008 at 12:52 am

shit i even read a post comparing bynum to ewing whats next robinson or olajuwon on the comparison list.

who would u rather have okafor or bynum should be the post

Big V says:
Depends on the context. If it’s to win TODAY, I’m taking Yao. If I’m building a team for the future, I might lean toward Bynum.
But seriously, Bynum’s been good for half a season and also caught a serious injury. Let’s see him prove himself by having a good, healthy season before we jump on his back.
October 29th, 2008 at 1:12 am
Ian says:
big v
well u have to assume is to win now cuz if u r building for the future ud take the young one 99% of the time.
October 29th, 2008 at 1:33 am
dagwaller says:
Yao is only 28. Not “old” by any stretch.
October 29th, 2008 at 1:39 am
Ian says:
dag
i didnt say he was old
in this case id take yao regardless of when i want to win.
October 29th, 2008 at 3:29 am
dagwaller says:
No, I knew what you meant, but I wanted to go ahead and point that out to anyone that thought he was old. Not as young as Bynum (21) certainly, but not old.

i’d take a shovel.
to hit yao’s flat ass face with it.

dapro says:
This shouldn’t be a debate
Yao has been vastly improved to give you 20+ points and 9 rebs consistantly and has been the #1 option is Houston for several seasons
Bynum has put together a a solid half of a season as a 2nd or 3rd option
Amare or Yao that’s the better question
October 29th, 2008 at 10:43 am
JR says:
wow, horrible question.
should be more like yao vs howard, or bynum vs okafor. im getting sick n tired of certain commentators/analysts/writers jumping on the yao-bashing bandwagon every chance they get.

Who cares about Yao 20 and 9.I see people in New York trying to ban Zach Randolph from the Garden for the same shit.Yao aint nothing but a tall ass softie from China so he got some fame.

dagwaller says:
Actually, doc, last year Yao posted 22 and 12, not 20 and 9. Bynum had 13 and 10. So, yknow, if you don’t care about an extrea 9 points and 3 boards a game, I would love to be in your fantasy basketball league.
