5 Terrible Sports Video Games
Does anyone out there remember this game? The blog mental_floss posted a list of what they’re calling “5 Notably Terrible Sports Video Games.” Hoops games make up three of the five titles listed, with No. 1 being the game pictured here: Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City. We’ve heard of (and maybe even owned the other two games listed), but we gotta be honest – we’ve never even heard of this MJ game. Has anyone out there ever played it? Let us know…

I dunno how/why we got it in France but we did. My younger cousin owned it. Never tried it though. I’d rather be playing NBA Jam T.E. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALL DAY!

Hahahaha! I had this game! It was really bad… it was a side scrolling adventure game where you had to collect keys to unlock the doors of your teammates in time for the All Star game.
MJ used different basketballs as weapons and could even dunk on someone as a special move. Graphics were terrible of course and the story was lacking to say the least…
Hilarious that you guys posted this!

I remember this game to as a kid in the 80s – only because I remember thinking, “cool! a basketball game!” only to flip the pack and be thoroughly confused… ha!

I remember this game. At the end of a level, MJ would dunk on a goal, sort of like when Mario would have to touch the box at the end of a level in Super Mario Bros. 3. Shaq-Fu’s still the greatest ass sandwich in sports game history.

I played that game, it came out on SNES at the time NBA stars were making their own video game (Shaq Fu…) and after MJ retired in the first time to explore a new life in baseball. It was 1994 and I was 13. MJ went on “a quest to save the rest of the players for an All-Star charity game, who have all been kidnapped”. Wow, that pitch looks a lot like the remices of Space Jam. The comparison stops here.
That game was awful, as awful as I was a big MJ fan. You were “killing” enemies throwing bball at them, and different balls existed with different powers. What a programme. After finishing it, I went back to my old MegaDrive and start a 1992 USA Basketball game with the original Dream Team.
That one was a pure classic.

I own Bill Laimbeer’s Combat Basketball, and it is a GREAT game! There were all sorts of powerups, and in between games you could buy new players with better stats. Obviously, the only player in the game with maxed out stats was Bill Laimbeer. By the time the Championship game rolled around, you’d have 5 Bills just destroying everyone.
Good times.

Thoughts on the Jordan/Shaq games:
In Jordan’s game, were there passwords like “IHATEISIAH” where you would get unlimited fireballs?
Since the storyline included finding friends to play with in the charity game, but apparently (according to the story) no players were credited with being in the game, does that mean that Jordan was just saving guys like John Paxson and Brad Sellers?
Depressing that no one has ever, EVER won that game, because Brian Williams is still missing.
In Shaq’s game, did you have to fight Charles Barkley and Brad Miller? Did Kobe make an appearance as the bratty teenager wearing skates (a la Skate in Streets of Rage 2)?
Was the bad guy gang called the Queens?

Or how about Shaq’s moves? I mean, was there a challenge where you had to take free throws? Or was that just not a move that could be done?

That MJ chaos in the windy city game was funny…You had to dunk on the baskets to drop keys that you would later use to unlock doors. He would throw flaming basket balls and all..My grandfather has a copy of that game and my Super NES works if I can get him to give me the game I’ll try my best to send it to you all just send the details and address of where to send to my email

The MJ game sucked balls. I don’t even know why he put his name on that crap. Throwing basketballs at zombies wasn’t fun. I guess having Hir Airness’ name on the game sells.
Charles Barkley’s Shut up and Jam was ok. It wasn’t the best bball game at the time, but it was sure worth playing if you have nothing better to do.
Worst sports game for me would be NBA Jam Extreme. They just fucked that series up with that game. Only bright spot was Marv Albert.

I have to agree with penske1 and chrisGO. NBA Live for PC has gone nowhere but down the past 3-4 years. Classic NBA games from the past, like Tecmo NBA basketball (http://flashgamesite.com/play1304game.html), they were the real deal.
Those top 5 worst, I never played them, but it seems like Laimbeer’s game must have been a winner.
