Chauncey and Rip Cried Over the Trade

Chauncey BillupsThis image would make Rip cry

After news dropped that Chauncey would be traded to Denver, he and Rip Hamilton sat down in the same hotel room and cried. They shared stories, they laughed and they cried.

“It was good,” Billups said. “It was deep. I will never forget my six years in Detroit, and I will never forget those three hours that I spent with my two brothers in that room.”

In addition to the tears, Chauncey shared another detail of his conversation with Rip, one that could help to explain his being “out of sync” before his 24-point game last night against the Warriors.

“If Rip would have knew that this deal was going on, I just don’t know that he would have signed that extension. It was kind of funny to me that they announced this trade the same day that he signed. I really don’t know. … It just seemed weird to me. He signed that extension three days before the trade. … I think it might have been a little different if all this was exposed early.”

I don’t think that’s something to brush off if you’re a Pistons fan. Though ‘Sheed and AI were the two guys pulled into a TNT interview before the game last night, Rip is as big a part of their success as anyone. In fact, he might be the biggest part. Even if Rasheed Wallace is still a Top 10 talent when he puts forth maximum effort, Rip is the one guy on this team that can’t really be replaced. He’s a supremely efficient scorer who makes everyone around him better without necessarily having to be a wonderful passer.

Are you worried about Rip’s relationship with the Pistons’ organization right now?

Well, Rip should pull a mobley and whine over this, they put there faith in Rip giving him that extension that he will play hard every night for a team that wants him, so he should play hard eveyr game.

  2. K Dizzle says:

Damn, that’s shady. Joe D needs to clean this up

  3. E$ says:

I’m just glad they beat the Lakers in the finals that year, my favorite moment of Billiups being a Piston

  4. Blue says:

that’s deep man…it goes to show why a team like the pistions have been successful for so long. this really is a TEAM sport.

but KDizzle is right…that is pretty shady on Dumars’ part. i know they’re not under any obligation to tell the players before hand, but i mean, damn, if it’s going to wreak some sort of havoc on the chemistry, it should be out there.

  5. it aint easy being green says:

    HOMOS

  6. Bruce says:

Way to go Dumars! Show those players who is the boss. Let him be humble before he can be great. The objective is to win championship. Duamrs did state after last year playoffs loss no players is untouchable well maybe for Stuckey.

Mobley and Francis……..Billups and Rip. Isiah and Dumars….get the trend.

  7. fallinup says:

NBA is still a business no matter how you wanna look at it. Billups and Rip didn’t see the writing on the wall over the summer? Changes were coming. Joe D even said “no one is untouchable”.

  8. GEE...always smell it and look at it first! says:

LOL Billups appears to still be uncomfy in Denver. That is my feeling at least. Even in an interview about handeling changes, he seemed to be like “Well in Detroit it was slower and the concentrations was on D, but here we go so fast that we, well we try to play D but it’s hard when you are going so fast”.

He might as well said GK sucks and I hate being away from Detroit.

I really feel like he hates GK’s system, if there is one.

  9. Kermit the Washington says:

Dag. I was upset at Ben Wallace for breaking up something special back in ’06 or whatever…and now I’m upset at Dumars for the same thing. I understand the “Championship First” mentality, but dang. I mean, what if the Knicks did that just because they couldn’t get it done against the Bulls? Or the Jazz? Teams that play mad years together are better for it, even if they ultimately don’t get a ring. And the crazy thing is, they DID get a ring! Now it’s virtually erased cause they didn’t get ANOTHER one. When will it all end?! You made BILLUPS CRY for God’s sake!

  10. alex says:

Rip is not as important as Tay to the Pistons kind of basketball.

  11. Ian says:

    kermit
wallace didnt break up anything he got his money and he sucks
    the pistons didnt lose anything

    now billups thats another thing

  12. Kermit the Washington says:

Ian…Detroit never recovered after he left. He was intense in the playoffs, and we never got the same intensity from the Center spot ever since. Nazr Mohammad, Theo Ratlif, Kwame Brown…we’re definitely missing the ‘fro. And HE’s missing the Pistons system as well. He never recovered after he left either.

  13. karizmatic says:

yeah absolutely, this was one of the things I thought about when I heard about the trade, because I’m pretty sure last year, or maybe it was the year before when they were up for contract extenstions, Rip publicly lobbied for Billups, saying if Billups didn’t sign he wasn’t going to sign. So I thought it was real awkward that they announced Rip’s re-signing and the Billups trade on the same day. If Rip had known I am almost certain he doesn’t re sign with them. Everyone knows Rip and Chauncey are mad tight, so this story doesn’t surprise me. That is also a dirty way for Dumars to get it done, but hey it is a business and Rip is still dropping buckets so what can you say.

  14. jace says:

usually id say cry about it. but i guess they didnt give him the whole story before he signed the extension. id say keep playin or girl about it. can’t do anything about this business.

  15. QueSt??? says:

lmfao hahahahhaha, wat u failed to mention was that after that they both went up to billups room.

  16. tim says:

Yeah the two wanted to retire together…but Joe D told them what’s up, and what if Denver didn’t come up and say we want Billups for Iverson and McDyess like the day after??? Apprently Dumars was working on it sunday night…So he probably didn’t know…

  17. Big V says:

‘Sheed isn’t a top 10 talent period. Get over it.

  18. rocky lobsterghini says:

it aint easy being green says:

    “HOMOS”

    lmao

  19. George W Kush Sr says:

I’m sorry, maybe yall didnt heard, but Joe Dumars had said that everyone was on the trading block during the summer. Maybe word didn’t get out to all the players.

Personally, I heard a few rumors before the season began about Billups being traded. I dont know, maybe I started thinking about that then, that team might be changed up a lil. Maybe that’s just me, i dunno.

  20. doc says:

They like brothers so I feel it.Its different from Cat and Francis them Faggots was ready to retire.Francis came on TNT and said he couldnt get through the day.And I dont believe Dumars made that trade for a chip.He sees the writing on the wall that his squad is getting older and he made a trade to get some free agency money.A smart GM doesent trade Big Shot to let AI run the point for a chip. There are other factors over the chip in the D this year.

  21. SayItIsntSo says:

They traded Billups and Iverson..now get over it. I like Chauncy, and I hope he can help that Nuggets team out..but Chauncy hasn’t been “Mr. Big shot” since they won the Championship, so some of you need to get over that as well. The Pistons started changing their style of play since a few years ago, they wanted to start concentrating on scoring more to go with their defense and were already working on that type of system. And although playing with Iverson will take some getting used to (because they had all been playing together for 6 years) it is not as drastic as some of you are trying to make it acting as if Detroit just completely blew that team up and thats just it. Give me a break. Rasheed even admitted lastnight that they had gotten too complacent.

Like some have said, Dumars said after last seasons playoffs that no one was safe, so people need not to be that surprised.

  22. doc says:

Say it ain so.I aint getting over shit.I read the articles and comment. If you dont like my shit dont read it.Get over yourself becuse your opinion aint mine.I dont give a fuck what you think about ball. All I knowis what I think. Some ballers get praised by peopleand some dont.Because I dont praise who you praise dont make mine wrong. How the fuck can u tell somebody get over the trade and you on a damn comment section about the trade.U get over it my man.To get technical I probaly qualify more than u on the subject considering I know how the league works and had a couple runs that didnt work out(for the Sixers and Clippers). But I dont come on here and bitch about what you say daily.Just now and its a wrap after this.Because I know opinions are like assholes and 2 people can know the game very well and have different opinions.Skip my shit over if u dont like mines family and stop having temper tantrums when somebody critcize your friend or your man crush whatever the fuck it is.People come on here and talk shit about Mike Kobe Bron and everyone else but when I come at AI it make you sick. You need a life outside of Dime if shit on here make you sick.

  23. SayItIsntSo says:

    Doc,

Stop with the Internet thug talk already. All you are doing is making people laugh. You take this stuff too seriously, again it makes me wonder about the type of people that visit Dime when you take things like this so seriously. So just because you had FAILED runs in the NBA that qualifies you to hate on players everyday? GTFOH!! I guess it does make since, if you cant be on their level then why not sit back a talk a bunch of sh*t. People get hated on this site everyday you are right about that, some deserve it and some dont, but when people like yourself come to this site to hate on the same players everyday you stand out, thats a problem with YOU, period…take it how you want to. Some of you act like you got something personal against these players, give us all a break already. There is a differense between constructive critisism and hating…look it up. I guess it makes you feel important to sit back at your computer talking a bunch of nonsense about people that could care less.

Also, you need to get over yourself, because my comment was directed towards everyone still whining about this trade. Stop being so sensitive…its a blogsite homie, its not life.. I have gone weeks without checking out Dime, come back and find yourself in damn near every post… so take your own advise and find a life outside of Dime instead of sitting around talking a bunch of sh*t all day. :)

  24. SayItIsntSo says:

^P.S. If what I have to say about Iverson (because I dont choose to throw him under the bus everyday that counts as “praising him” according to you?) or anyother player bothers you that much, STFU and skip over it…People like you kill me, you have no problem voicing your opinions on this site night in and night out, but as soon as someone questions it you get your panties in a bunch. Hilarious.
