Create-Your-Team
Tracy McGrady (photo. Marc Morrison)Watching the Celtics turn their game on “Champions” gear and run away from the Raptors last night, my mind went back to the day of the Kevin Garnett trade, when one of my boys described the new and improved Celts as “Danny Ainge playing with the Create-a-Team on (NBA) Live.” Which is even more true post-chip, since every available free agent Boston can afford wants to play for them, meaning Ainge can pretty much pick the ones he wants. (And yet he still ended up with Pat O’Bryant.)
Personally, I haven’t done Create-a-Team since Live 98, but if I did it with today’s players, who would I put on my team?
To maintain some semblance of realism, let’s put some parameters in place: Twelve players, one head coach (doesn’t have to be a current NBA head coach); no more than three recent All-Stars on the roster (“recent” being in the past five years); at least one rookie; at least three certified NBA bench guys on the bench; and finally, at least one fringe bench guy who could be out of the League tomorrow. My lineup:
PG – Tony Parker
The Tom Brady of NBA point guards. Not the most talented, maybe not the most media-friendly, the one you’d like to imagine is a huge d-bag, but nonetheless he’s gone up against all of the best at his position and beat them.
SG – Tracy McGrady
Still one of the five most talented players in the world if you ask me. Capable of dropping 30 points a night and being the go-to scorer in crunch time, makes his free throws, solid defensively when he wants to be, and he’s a better playmaker than somebody like Kobe because he’s wired to be a better teammate.
SF – Danny Granger
Ever since I’ve adopted his team, I’ve fallen in love with Granger’s game. One of the best shooting forwards in the League who can score, rebound and play D and excel at multiple positions.
PF – Tim Duncan
No explanation necessary.
C – Zach Randolph
Explanation necessary. For starters, any center who plays with Duncan doesn’t have to be a great defender, since Duncan is the main one protecting the rim. And he don’t have to be a great passer, he just have to understand the game (look at Oberto). Z-Bo can do what he does best (rebound and score) and still stay out of TD’s way, and it would work. Now you may look down the page and say that Zach’s backup on this team is better than him — and you’d be right — but I think said backup would be more OK coming off the bench than Zach. Plus Zach is my favorite player, so he’s going on my team and he’s starting, OK?
BENCH
Derrick Rose (rookie), Kevin Durant (T-Mac of the second unit; crunch-time lineup of Parker, McGrady, Durant, Granger, Duncan), Bruce Bowen (lock-down specialist), Paul Millsap (Certified Bench Guy #1), Al Jefferson, Nate Robinson (CBG #2), Quinton Ross (CBG #3, fringe guy, secondary lock-down specialist).
COACH
Nate McMillan
Gets the players’ respect as a somewhat-recent former player; insists on discipline; smart game-planner; after time spent with Team USA and current Blazers, has experience balancing a deep and talented roster and values defense; he’s Mr. Sonic.
Who’s on your team?

Why this team ?
Because this is a defensive team and defense brings championships. On the other side, you have 2 great players (Lebron and Wade) and players that compliment the 2 leaders. You have imediate score from the bench and players that can play diferent positions, and money wise , it is not a pipe dream.

courtlegend says:
pg – cp3 – could be the greatest pg ever
sg – durant – (unless i’m retarded and he got all star last yr?) – to be honest its barely even fair to pick him as a non all star because hes the michael jordan of forwards waiting to happen
sf – pierce – i have a boston bias admittedly, but dude’s a beast and proved it in last years playoffs. not to mention he is the ONLY guy in the league noone can ever totally shutdown by taking something away
pf – beasley – too much potential to pass up and next to dwight he couldn’t be doubled and would score at will
c – howard – i picked dwight and beasley over timmy d because, even though timmy is one of the all-time greats, think how dominant shaq in his prime was. then realize that dwight is shaq with a 40 inch vertical…
Bench:
Derrick Rose – buckets off the bench coming in for CP3
Rudy Fernandez (NBA bench) – ditto only with more potential…is it totally out of the question to set his ceiling as the spanish larry bird?
Ron Artest – defensive stopper along with pierce and he’ll give the team toughness and bench scoring as well as a guy who can step in if someone gets injured
Leon Powe (bench) – again, boston bias, but he’s a hustle player who comes in and gets it done
Tyson Chandler – athletic shot blocker off the bench, gives the bench some size
Gerald Greene – (does he count as a fringe?)(bench)
David Lee – plenty of shots already being launched by this team so he’s someone to collect the misses
Coach – Don Nelson – imagine CP3 running Nelly Ball with Pierce, Durant, beasley, chandler, and greene all running the floor for dunks or spot up 3′s and david lee/dwight howard trailing for dunks and put backs

Kudabeen says:
THE PERFECT SQUAD
Coach Byron Scott – The coach I’d love to play for and have as the head of my team. No nonsense, fair, and knows how to get guys ready to compete…
PG: Chris Paul – The best in the game. Has all the tools to make every better and competes on both ends with the same amount of intensity.
SG: Andre Iguodala – A freak of an athlete with many tools that can help a team. His quickness on both ends can be problems and his ego isn’t at the level where he couldn’t just fit in. His D and ability to run the floor and finish will give many easy buckets on a team properly ran by the likes of CP3
SF: Joe Johnson – at 6’8″ he is much bigger than people think. He is a Swiss Army Superstar that would be able to switch off with Dre-I perfectly. His shooting touch and solidified ability to bury clutch buckets give the team an unselfish go to guy down the strech…Love his game and the fact that he is low key until it matters most…
PF: Kevin Garnett – The most versatile Big in the game. Can hit the open J with range, Can play D on anyone, intensity is contagious, and he is as unselfish as can be. Rock solid winner…”What more could you say now?”
C: Andrew Bynum – Up and comer. He has great hands and really good instincts around the basket on both ends. He also has a little fire to him and that is the physical force you need to hold down the paint next to KG. (I was going to go with Dwight, but decided to replace Rudy Gay with Joe Johnson)
Rookie: Beasley – I can play him 3 or 4 and know I’m getting buckets and rebounds of the bench no matter what. I love his demeanor on the floor. He is very workman like, but is very polished offensively. He will compliment KG and Bynum very well regardless of who’s on the floor.
Bench 1: Randy Foye – His size and ability to dig in and grind with anyone is what makes me appreciate his game. I’ve personally watched him play out of position against bigger stronger guys and hold his own. He isn’t afraid and I want that guy on my team
Bench 2: Troy Murphy – I think he is overpaid and underrated as an effective big man in the L. He has great touch around the basket and shooting range past the 3 pointer line. He also rebounds at a very high rate when given the time to work. Can play him at the 4 or 5.
Bench 3: Brandon Bass – Straight beast. To have a guy come in and be able to change the momentum of a game by punching in on a guys head and be able to bang down low is major. You will not be bullied with a guy like Bass on your team. And along with my theme he plays with a fire.
Bench 4: Jason Kapono – He just gets buckets man. Quick release, accurate, and has other little slick moves to get off shots. Love his confidence. On this team I don’t need him to be a great defender, he will have a team and system to just get bucket when needed and guys who can all create.
Bench 5: Renaldo Balkman – I was going to go with Bruce Bowen or Shane Battier, but I feel Balkman has that same ability. He gives you the added athleticism, some shot blocking, and some ball handling as well. If he develops a set shot he is the ultimate glue guy…
Fringe: Gerald Green – Recent production has him getting a little more of the grooming I always thought he should get. High School guy who get very little guidance, playing time, or patience, but has an excellent skill set. We are starting to see how he can be effective. If he get a little stronger on D he is a starter.
None of my guys are soft, injury prone or heartless. They’d give work to any squad out there…Match up!

PF: Kevin Garnett (AllStar3), Al Jefferson, David Lee (CBG3)
C: Marcus Camby, Tyson Chandler, Greg Oden (Rookie)

I’d actually start Chris Paul, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Al Jefferson, Marcus Camby, so Garnett plays as a SF and LeBron as SG.
I’m going to assume Delfino being out of the league makes him fringe, but I don’t think the same applies to Childress. Isn’t Odom also coming off the bench this year? That’s ridiculous.
Except at point, this team is huge. At every position, the team has amazing defenders and rebounders. Not a lot of perimeter shooting, but you’re just going to crush the other team on the glass and they’re going to have a hell of a time trying to score. I think because you’ve got so much defence and rebounding, you can have guys leak out every time a shot goes up, and score lots of fast-break points. There’s so much flexibility, since most of these guys can play multiple positions. If you wanted to go small, you could put Garnett at 5, Odom at 4, LeBron at 3, Ellis at 2, Paul at 1.
The toughest thing for me was not taking Dwight Howard, because he’s such a beast, but there are so many good non all-star centres, and I couldn’t say the same for some of the other positions.

Coach by Pop
First off I chose Samaki Walker so Duncan can bang his head in everytime they go to practice. I can’t believe this scrub called David Robinson soft.
I picked Calderon and Rondo because they are distributors who don’t need to score to impact the game. Calderon also can hit the 3.
I pick Raja Bell because of his defense and he can hit the 3. Fernedez is my rookie who will one day take Raja Bell starting spot.
Paul Pierce because he is clutch and willing to sacrifice his number for the good of the team. He also is a good rebounder. Posey because he can win you a couple of games once the playoff start (my Robert Horry factor).
Garnett because of his defense and he will not let this team get complacent. He can work the inside/outside post game with Duncan. Also who are you going to double in the post if you have Garnett and Duncan. I pick Jefferson because the offense will run through him when I go to the bench. Also he will be a good sub if Garnett ever get hurt. Milsap because of his energy.
Duncan because he is the best post player in the league. Also our defense will be deadly with Duncan and KG in the middle. I pick Tyson Chandler for this defense, rebounding, and his ability to catch the lob from Calderon.

Explanation 4 Team Buildup:
THIS IS AN UNBEATABLE SQUAD!!! You have everything on this team: teamwork, unselfishness, defense (on the perimeter, on the interior, shot-blocking), offense (one-on-one & interior scoring in the halfcourt, open-court ability, 3-pointers), hustle, intensity, competitiveness, leadershp, and clutch ability. Even with 3 superstars (prob the 3 MOST UNSELFISH IN THE LEAGUE) a coach like Gregg Popovich would keep egos in check with all players being treated equally and held accountable.

Big Shot BOB says:
Yeah Drink your right I forgot about Ginobili’s 2005 allstar appearance. In that case I’ll trade him for James Posey. But I must admit your bench looks better than mine. I couldn’t think of all the energy guys in the league. It would be a close game though because you basically have the same starting five as I do.

I THINK THIS THE STARTING 5 WOULD BE A NICE SOLID LINEUP
EACH PLAYER CAN SCORE/CREATE/AND DEFEND THE BALL
STARTERS
BILLUPS- can run the floor and get the ball to the hole, doesnt have too score to be a big effective
HOWARD-if he can stay healthy would light up tha scoreboard period
ARTEST-a lockdown defender most likely to defend the best player on the opposite team also can put points on the board
GARNETT-we all know what garnett can do
ODEN- i think playing next to garnett and all the other veterens oden can develop into an nice big man
FISHER,MAYO,TURKOGLU,ALRIDGE-would nice OPTIONS off the bench
