Brandon RoyBrandon Roy, Dime #24

There’s no question Brandon Roy got off that game-winning shot at the OT buzzer in time to beat the Rockets. HOWEVER, did anyone else get the impression that the clock didn’t start as soon as he caught the ball? Can you catch, pivot, elevate and shoot with a full follow-through in 0.8 seconds? Everyone who’s played with or against B-Roy will tell you he always seems to be moving slower than you think and is deceptively quick, but something was kinda fishy about that. And the game was in Portland, so you can imagine where the timekeeper would be a little slow on the trigger. Oh well. The Rockets didn’t seem to protest it, so we guess it’s not a huge deal … Throughout the fourth quarter and overtime, Roy (17 pts, 7 rebs, 5 asts) was mostly being put on smash by Ron Artest, but the few times he did get away from Ron-Ron he made the most of it, either getting a bucket or drawing Yao away from his man and getting an assist. Two plays before the game-winner, Roy lost Artest on a full-sprint, stop-on-a-dime turnaround J that went down with 1.9 seconds remaining … That shot led to what could’ve been the game-winner from Yao; with Portland up by two, Rafer Alston held it on the inbound pass for about 4.8 seconds while looking for Artest or T-Mac (30 pts, 7 rebs, 8 asts), finally getting it to Yao, who calmly sunk a turnaround baseline jumper and got fouled in the process. When he hit the free throw, the Blazers looked like they were done before Roy’s heroics … Not sure what this says about each guy, but did you notice when Roy hit the turnaround shot with 1.9 left, the Blazers bench acted like they’d seen him do that a million times? Meanwhile, when Yao hit his big shot, the Rockets bench looked surprised as hell (and Jerryd Bayless looked like he was actually going to cry on the other side) … If you don’t happen to have a sick handle or stop-and-go ability like Roy, Rudy Fernandez showed another effective way to give Artest buckets: run around like an escaped mental patient and hope you’re too fast for Artest to grab you. One time Rudy (15 pts) ran Ron through the hamster wheel, including two tight circles around a couple other players, before getting the ball and sprinting past Artest to hit a scoop shot over Yao’s fingertips. Reggie Miller — one of the best ever at moving without the ball — compared Fernandez to Drazen Petrovic with his off-ball skills … Reggie on Chuck Hayes: “He’s a little offensively challenged.” … While we feel bad for Eric Gordon, who’s been relegated to garbage time minutes in L.A., at least he’s playing. Bayless has been clocking DNP-CD’s at a surprising rate. Even Ike Diogu is getting more burn … With Dwight Howard (14 pts, 8 rebs, 3 blks) on the bench for long stretches due to foul trouble, the Sixers failed to capitalize and fell to 0-3 on the road this year. What are the two most basic things you have to do against the Magic? Box out, and get on their shooters. Philly did neither, and it seemed every Orlando bucket came from offensive rebounds and wide-open threes … Our pre-game checklist for Andre Iguodala breaking out of his early-season funk included, (1) not turning the ball over a lot, (2) scoring without milking 22 seconds off the shot clock at a time, (3) contributing in other ways — like rebounding — if his shot wasn’t falling. Consider it a near-success for Iguodala: He was 4-for-12 from the field (16 pts) and committed five turnovers, but he did pull down 11 boards and didn’t completely stagnate the offense … Did Jameer Nelson shave and get a line-up for national TV? Good for him … Andrew Bynum clearly enjoys being rich. The other day we told you about him making it rain the the club (to which Phil Jackson said: “It was only $100 — all ones. I guess it’s what we have to expect in this day and age.”) and here’s this from Luke Walton‘s blog: “What did I do for Halloween? We arrived in Denver Friday night and had a nice dinner at Elway’s Steak House courtesy of Andrew Bynum, who was kind enough to pick up the bill since he signed his new contract extension.” Having rich friends is always nice … We’re out like Scruffy Jameer …

Why should anyone be surprised by a Yao jumper? He has been hitting them his whole career, since his days in sports academies in China. It’s what makes him the not-Shawn Bradley of this era. It’s not his average footwork or work around the rim that has made him a good player. It’s just excitement, not astonishment.

  • sans

Walton went on to say: “where I then drunk myself into a stupor for barely seeing any playing time this season. Man, you have to drink pretty heavy when Vlad Radmanovich–Slalom the Space Cadet–gets more burn then me.”

  • http://www.nba.com Jay

Wow. Roy hits a tough game-tying jumper to send the game to OT. Then proceeds to swish an INCREDIBLE 30 footer to take the win and the first thing Dime has to say is about the clock starting?

Yall need to stop sucking up to the same players (Kobe, LBJ, CP3) and give some love to the other talents in the league.

  • http://www.nba.com Jay

Also, I believe officials control the clock when it comes down to the wire like that.

  • http://dimemag.com Austin Burton

    @Jay — You didn’t see THIS?

  • JDigiac

Jay, Austin just Owned you son.

  • JDigiac

Austin, couldn’t of worked out better that B.Roy was the picture for that piece …haha

  • knoc

that loss is on tmac. dude didnt even make an effort to stay with his man…he stood and pointed

  • knoc

and good call on the clock

  • http://www.nba.com Jay

I actually did see that. Big deal. Roy’s name was mentioned amongst like 50 others, including unproven guys like Bayless, Conley, Gordon, Westbrook, and current busts like Bargnani, Blatche, Foye, and Yi.

So because 50 guys, half of whom may not be in the league for long, got mentioned in a 3-paragraph blub, that’s enough to disprove my point that Roy and many others don’t get the attention they deserve from Dime?

i was laughin so hard when Rudy was running circles, i think i missed like 10 seconds of the game. and LMAO @ the Jerryd Bayless comment.

but hey, even with the questioning of the catching/turning/pivot/drink some tea/start the shot clock/shoot the J, you gotta give it to b-roy. it was an amazing game in the final 10 minutes, from the rockets shutting em down and coming back, to the shots hit by both roy and yao. you gotta admit though, it would have SUCKED for portland to have lost on those freethrows

Jay needs to chill the f*** out, i think b-roy gets plenty of love from dime (look at the pictures, its not like when Aron wrote about how amazing Rajon Rondo was gunna be and he put up a pic of rondo during a power outage)

good coverage dime, give it up to my fantasy beast Thaddeus Young tho!

  • sans

Thad is killing it this year. Tony Battie couldn’t handle any small bit of him last night.

  • Atom

I think the Houston bench only reacted like that to Yao’s shot because Roy had just made that smooth jumper and they had prematurely felt that the game was over. You cant say it didnt cross your mind that Roy’s first jumper was the dagger, at the end of regulation nobody hit a shot for i think over a minute, bench didnt know they were in for an epic OT finish where the teams were actually going to keep making shots.

  • Hi, Jurg from Denmark

Hi Hi from Jurgy from Denmark visiting Poland this week.

Can I say to Mr Fantasy Doctor that in my basketball community I am now equal or higher in pecking order than God, Pope or Prime Minister Rasmussen cos you say Hi Jurg in Daily Fantasy.

I had to celebrate by lots of sex with prostitutey in Poland but she from Russia. But it still make me sad too because my point guards Conley and Udrih doing not good. Very bad play. And Sessions up up up and away. And poor Jurg coming last from 12 competitors in yahoo fantasy.

I should tell you that I laughed lots at Mr Austin Burton pulling Jay pants down with a good prank. Make you look silly even to people like me not in America.

So bye from Jurg. Come to Poland where sex and drugs are cheap. Bye today. What/s up and holla.

We also need to be calling out Andre Miller. He was supposed to run the show, but in watching the games he isn’t really helping the team. He is looking for his shot way to much and he is taking bad shots that hurt the team. He shots these unexpected shots and the team can’t react to faster teams like Toronto,Orlando,Miami…

Brand’s height hurt him last night he couldn’t see over the double team to hit the open man. Andre Iguodala and Thad were really running in each other’s way on cuts to the basket. Dalembert was waiting to be setup, but then was like, “damn this” and just started getting put backs. Dre-I had a good floor game, but he kills his rhythm and aggression with cheap fouls. I will say his handle has improved in traffic and right now he is the best playmaker on the team.

Andre Miller is playing out of pocket. Sixers need more Lou Williams or either the old Andre Miller…To bad there aren’t many Vet PGs out there to trade for. I know Sixers don’t want Steph, Tinsley…It will take some time, so these lumps will hopefully get them focused…

  • http://www.dimemag.com Aron

That’s hilarious. The pic is from the NBA 2K9 party so you can see why it’s dark. Keep in mind Andrew loves that pic because you see him in there too.

  • fallinup

Jay is just a covert op for SLAM mag. haha

Yes Dime shows cats like Kobe, LBJ, CP3. But damn…shouldn’t they… considering they are stars. I’ll defend Dime to the end, they have consistently been on top of high school, and college ball. You hear about kids still breaking the ice here.

I’ve been seeing a lot of bitching and whining on these comment boards recently about Dime. Ya’ll need to get over that shit, or see if you can find a more dedicated mag then Dime…..good luck with that.

Yao Ming shot was the game winner – Portland should not have had time for the buzzer beater http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f04tIpF1ffc

  • Spliff 2 My Lou

Sorry Jay but Austin has been touting B-Roy since he was at Washington U. Remember, Austin and B-Roy are both from Seattle.

  • Spliff 2 My Lou

And by the way I think that turn around buzzer beater by Roy was one fluid motion. I didn’t really see a pivot. I think it was very fair. Best game of the season thus far.

  • http://www.geocities.com/dimemag Dagomar

Roy is a damn good player. Wish the Raps had chosen him over Bargnani, although Bargnani might still become something special. Looks like Tmac broke out of whatever slump he was in; maybe those injuries are finally fading.

  • odi

hey austin if u can catch the ball turn around and hit a jumper in 0.3 seconds then u can do run downcourt and hit a layup in 0.8

  • http://www.alltexasforums.com rangerjohn

dime: “Can you catch, pivot, elevate and shoot with a full follow-through in 0.8 seconds? ”

ask the spurs in 2004. if fisher can “catch, pivot, elevate and shoot” in 0.4 then roy can in twice the time.

  • http://allthatjazzbasketball.blogspot.com/ Amar

Kenny and Charles point this out — on that last play, why did t-mac leave him so open?

  • http://allthatjazzbasketball.blogspot.com/ Amar

on the time keeper issue though, on the previous “this is it, Portland” moment before overtime (around 30 seconds before) the clock didn’t start until Roy had gone past half court.

Yeah Jay B-Roy is on here every 2 days with that army jacket on.I like Fernandez he remind me of Manu.Iggy stinks.

  • SayItAintSo

That army jacket? Haha, that actually caught my eye the other day because it’s so very 206 of Roy.

AB, did you catch any of the Husky baskteball game lastnight?

    Little I-Thomas 2.0 was RIDICULOUS!

  • http://GEE2.com GEE…Please report to the office!

    Houston Up!

Ain’t nothing. Don’t get me wrong a loss is always something you don’t want. Right now though I would say these are losses that the Rockets need to experience to help them out later down the road when things really get close and start counting for real.

The clock issue doesn’t bother me as much as Yao is really seeming to struggle, and in particular Yao (just to me now) seems to have trouble with smaller dudes often. It’s like their low center of gravity or their wide bases just give him fits. I still wish that there was some kinda package that could be created to get Dwight or even LaMarcus. Oh well when you stuck you stuck. Not to say that Yao doesn’t do ok, he is just behind where he should be to me.

These little losses here and there don’t phase me. What worries me more is when you start going on losing streaks. That consecutive stuff can really kill a team. Playing on their minds and making it hard to get out of a funk. So 1 loss here and there is aight, as long as its more wins in the week.

I look at everything based on 7 now. So it’s like while I give props to the Blazers (and I always like to see LaMarcus and Roy doing well) I still don’t think they could take the Rockets in 7.

Now Boston…another story, but hopefully the unit will be well versed by going through losses like this last one and some tough times to make them playoff durable and ready.

We finally got a first lady that looks like she can fight. Hillary didn’t look like she could fight she just looked sneaky. For real Mrs. Obama look like she don’t need secret service lol. Also glad we got some first kids that you don’t have to worry about being in the news for any weird scandals.

Props to my Broncos for getting a win.

Loved A.I.’s ESPN interview with Stephen A. I guess if you 21 in the L, A.I. is going to give you that work.

Proud of Chauncy who is seeming to be the after thought in all this. He isn’t creating any waves and just getting ready to do what he gotta.

    George Karl still sucks.

  • http://dimemag.com Austin Burton

@SayItAintSo — I missed the UW game. Who did they play, Seattle Central Community College?

  • QQ

Orlando’s 3-0 now since the ‘0-2 disaster'( there is n article dedicated to it, because of how BIG that disaster was) … Oh my bad, yall just making up problems (non- existent ones) bout teams when it’s the freaking START of the season.

  • dagwaller

Moral of the story: if Dime doesn’t like you, even when you’re clutch, you’re not allowed to be clutch.
