Do Dime Pieces Belong in Dime?

When we first started Dime over seven years ago we shared an office with a top NYC modeling agency. And there were only glass walls. Needless to say, it was amazing. During that time, or approximately our first 19 issues, we had a section in the magazine where we featured and celebrated beautiful women. The section was called “Dime Pieces” and was loved by many and hated by some. The some though made their voices heard and we decided to remove the Dime Piece section. So here’s my question, do Dime Pieces have a place in The Basketball Lifestyle Magazine? Is it appropriate? Are they a part of the basketball culture? Women feel free to comment as well. We’re equal opportunists here.

I think you already wrote your answer. Is Dime written for many, or just for some?

Dime does a great job of making the game entertaining and informative everyday. I check the website for stories every single day and not once have I felt lie it was lacking anything. Don’t get me wrong…an occasional lady now and then would be welcomed, but I think that Dime is doing fine without the Dime Pieces. Keep up the good work!

I think, as a basketball lifestyle magazine, if you want to add “dime pieces”, you should add female basketball players who you all also think are attractive. As a woman, I don’t want to see other women barely dressed for the sake of the fellas being able to get their jollies. It also makes it a tad embarrassing when checking out the site at work & someone walks by while i’m scrolling past a topless female.

Seriously though . . . I like looking at pretty girls, does it belong in dime? I don’t know. Does it matter, when you guys are in charge? Probably not, you guys can do whatever.
Do I come here looking for basketball talk, or pictures of models? I come here for basketball talk.

You guys are going to do what you’re going to do, so I guess the question is do you want to be known for the mag with basketball insight or for the mag with chicks and basketball insight.
If you want to run the chicks make a separate issue that is all about the ladies (ie SI’s Swimsuit Issue).
I don’t think you can have both for a long time, eventually one will override the other.
I agree that it is embarrassing to read a basketball website with half naked chicks on it at work. Eventually my I.T. guys will block this site if that’s the case.

Man like to see women half naked. Period. Its in our nature. We must appreciate the beauty of women, but in a positive manner. There is nothing wrong with posting the beauty of women. This is a country in which the media gives us what we want to see.
But this is a basketball site, not a modeling site. So Dime i think occasional Dime Pieces is OK, but dont over do it. This a lifestyle mag so really anything basketball related can be portrayed on the site and the mag.
And if your going to post Dime pieces make sure they are pleasing to your viewers eyes. And that they dont suffer from NOSSATALL. (give credit to AB (i think) for that word)

I loved em back in the day…and I have no problem with them now. I’ve been reading Dime since the beginning. What I loved most about Dime was the importance of good photography. Not only with the Dime Pieces but with your feature articles (covershots, players, etc.) as well.
Most of the Dime Pieces are exquisite pics. The ladies in player jerseys, and most of your style pieces are hot. Some I’ve looked at and said, “dayum…what’s this got to do with Dime?”…but it did get a little off kilter for a sec there.
You’ll always offend some. But you do have to look at your core audience as well. Dudes.
Having dimepieces, and keeping it sexy, hot, an eyecatcher, but yet tasteful isn’t that damn hard. I say bring em back.

I don’t think its a case of lowering yourself by putting the pics in the mag or on the blog. But, I would say this, if guys want to look at hot women on the net, more than likely they know where to go, if they want to see half-naked women on the net, they know where to go, and if they want to see naked women on the net, they know where to go.
And if they want to read smart/intelligent blogs and news/breaking news about Basketball, they know where to go.
Personally, the work it would take to put together those spreads and create more shoots, I would rather see Dime put the money and effort into bball related stuff. Or other area’s that would be more beneficial to Dime as a whole.

I don’t view Dime as simply a basketball magazine. Yeah we all know that’s your forte but I view Dime as a magazine of culture. The voice of my generation. You guys just don’t talk about ball you talk about all topics that even remotely have to do with ball and the culture that encompanies ball. If rap is synonomous with basketball then why can’t women?
Is it really a hassle to ignore a post? I ignore some posts that I don’t care to read all the time. If a reader doesn’t care to see a DimePiece post then they can ignore it. Simple as that.

i’m not saying the dime pieces don’t have a place in the mag or on the site. i’m just saying it should be basketball related. scantily clad women is not a part of the basketball lifestyle/culture specifically. men, regardless of whether or not they are sports fans, seem to have no problem oggling barely dressed women. that’s just life. but in a magazine that promotes itself as a basketball lifestyle magazine, dime should do it’s best to make everything relevant to that. if the dime pieces are cheerleaders, execs, or players, i think that would be better than just a random girl.
as far as just bypassing posts i don’t want to see, that would be fine if there weren’t pics as the lead to every article. since that’s not the case, it makes it somewhat difficult to simply bypass them at work. it’s not like i’m going to stop checking the site or stop buying the mag if dime pieces make a return to the regular line-up because, at the end of the day, i’m a basketball fiend. i’ll get my fix from dime & other outlets.

It is a slippery slope.
It kind of reminds me of the MTV reality shows. At the beginning, they kind of tied into the MTV philosophy. But their popularity grew until there was no more music videos on MTV.
So, yeah, it is okay to put pics of women in the Dime mag (especially if it is Sue Bird or some of the other beautiful WNBA ladies), but be careful not to go overboard. We don’t need another Maxim/FHM/etc.
November 19th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Brown says:
How long are some of you looking at these pictures? It takes like 3 seconds to scroll past a picture of one of the dime pieces. If you don’t want to get “caught” at work looking at them, then don’t open it up to see the gallery.
I used to subscribe to Maxim and only subscribed for the actual content. If I just wanted to look at the chicks I could do that at the newsstand for a couple minutes. It’s the same thing with Dime. I visit the website for the bball stuff, but the dime pieces are an added bonus.
Guys go to games to see the game, and the dance teams are nice. I never get courtside seats, so it’s nice to see what these girls actually look like up close.
Basically, if you don’t like it, you don’t have to look at it, and it’s pretty easy to flip the page or scroll down.
I don’t see the Dime Pieces being anything different than an advertisement with a female in it, which lots of magazines have.

Well, I’m a female NBA blogger, and the way I see it I have no problem flat out saying which NBA dudes I think are hot. (Boris, call me.) I’m in fact preparing a post on “how to get your girl to watch the NBA with you via the hot men angle” that the 90% of people who read my blog and are male won’t read, but that’s cool. It’s my space and my read on things. Do I watch because of hot men? No. But if they’re there…
So it’s kind of hypocritical of me to begrudge my guy friends/boyfriend looking at the Honeybees (or pick your team’s cheerleaders) ’cause they’re, you know, right there.
As far as the women on here, I just scroll on by. I’m not particularly offended, the pics just aren’t for me. I won’t stop reading because of it. (Oh, but I’ll stay out of the comment threads. Yeah.) Um, except sometimes the reading at work thing makes me freak out a bit. Solution: put ‘em up on Saturdays.

Playboy actually has some pretty good writers when they’re covering things like politics and economy and important social issues. But nobody who knows that started reading the articles because of it. They went for the obvious reason, and then found the good writing in between pictorials.
If these pictures draw some new fans in, who then see some good articles, then it was a pretty good plan. Someone might pick it up because it was open to a nice picture, and then keep coming back because they read a good article about their favorite team/player. It’s the nice box (no pun intended) that made the customer read enough to see the product inside.

First and foremost, this is a basketball website. It focuses on the game and on the players. Is it a bad thing for there to be scantily clad ladies included in the content? No, probably not. That being said, they should NOT be the focus, or even make up a significant portion of the content. The photo shoots should be the exceptions to the rule…
I, like most other readers, come here for basketball info. I just started reading Dime about a year ago, and think the site is fantastic. A few weeks ago (whenever it was), it seemed like every time I checked the site, there was a new set of pics up. And no new basketball articles. What about doing stories on Women who actually play basketball? High School – WNBA? And don’t just post pictures of Sue Bird in her underwear, talk about what she actually does on the court
If you’re truly sincere with your desire to create and facilitate a wider basketball culture, that is for everyone, you could consider how your message affects, everyone.
A rhetorical question for all my fellow basketball fans. You have a kid, that is a girl. When she is growing up are you going to encourage her to play hoops, or join the cheer team? I would want my child to be valued for her competitive or academic achievements and I would support media that would help her achieve higher goals than being a sex object.

GEE...When your learnin the facts of life says:
Now we gonna go back….back into tiiiime!
It has been and will be part of the culture.
Perhaps it didn’t start out that way but let us look at it.
The actual game itself didn’t have a whole lot that is included or loosely related to the culture of basketball.
The game itself started with the peach basket for some and milk cartons for others (often depended upon your side of the fence).
So I would say the culture at that time was the game itself and competition. Pure.
What got added (some good and some bad depending on ya view) changed a lot.
You got shoes, gear and clothing, music, television, brands and sponsors, money, rules added and rules changed, all types of leauges, vid. games, mascots, style, cheerleaders and dance teams and the list certainly does and will go on.
Pee-Wee, elementary, middle-school, junior high, highschool and college mostly have cheerleaders (and some dance teams) in different parts of our nation.
Young ladies have been introduced, learned more and even joined the sport sometimes through cheerleading. You can’t discredit other females associated with the sport as well that aren’t players or cheerleaders.
You got wives, moms and sisters who faithfully have supported their husbands, sons and brothers playing by being involved with the team directly ( coaches, refs, managers, stat keepers, ect..) or as a fan.
You have females that are added to advertisements in order to sell certain NBA products from movies to shoes.
Even handicapped women in wheelchairs who play and love the sport and other females young and old who have been blessed to have a visit from their favorite player.
So I say yes they are part of the culture and most def. should be part of your mag.
As to how you decided to highlight the women that is up to you. I am sure you all know and have done demographics on your fan base and you know how to target that.
I think most of your readers understand this is not a nudy mag. (at least I hope they do). So it’s cool to see a beautiful face and body with info. about them that love the game. That is cool with me.
That is just GEE though.

Like some of the guys commented above, keep it off the cover, off the main stories, make it a nice little section of the magazine (doesn’t have to be on every issue), and do it with taste. The last part is easier said than done though.

The comments pretty much say it all in regards to what kind of audience your interested in, but high horses aside:
Any content referring to women as “pieces” is downright awful.
A magazine that can offer high quality sports journalism doesn’t need to embarrass itself by publishing naked ladies. If you wan’t to “cut out a niche” – try to make it something about basketball.

I don’t have a problem with it who doesn’t love the sight of a beautiful woman. If you want to help relate it to hoops do something like you did with the knicks exec or sue bird or better yet just feature a dime of the week with a different cheerleader from a nba or college squad. I think it’s all agreed we come here for hoops but a pic of a woman once in a while is not a bad thing.

Oh and I agree with LS a little interview portion with them is an excellent idea and lends the some relevancy.

I think you already wrote your answer. Is Dime written for many, or just for some?
