How Good Would Derrick Rose Be With a Jumper?

Derrick RoseDerrick Rose

Down the stretch of last night’s Chicago/Utah game, Derrick Rose was beating Ronnie Price at will to the bucket. But with the Jazz guards going under every single screen - no matter whether it was five-to-ten feet below Rose - the rookie PG was forced to take some jump shots. Pretty much every jumper was wide open - but he didn’t make one of them.

In the end, he back-rimmed a jumper with the clock under ten seconds. Lucky for Rose, the ball careened to Larry Hughes whose 23-foot prayer was answered and sent the Jazz packing.

Truthfully, if Rose were able to consistently hit that 18-footer, there’s no telling how good he could be. I’m not trying to knock him by saying that he can’t stick a J. I’m just saying that if Rose can work out that kink, his ceiling is astronomical.

  1. Sweet English says:

    In a word. Very.

  2. Lakeshow says:

Now imagine how good Lebron would be if he had a jumper

  3. Mark says:

I watched the game and didnt think his jumper was that bad, he stuck a couple of mid rangers and a three! his jumper is only gonna get better, D Wade is only now looking decent for example and id say Rose is ahead of where Wade was as a rookie. Rose is already all star calibre, he will undoudtedly reach all NBA very soon

  4. C4 says:

The jumper has been falling, especially mid-range. He doesn’t take too many three-pointers, but like I’ve been saying, this guy is an All-Star now and might be starting in Phoenix in February.

  5. Kevin says:

Completely agree. I’ve been saying the same thing.

  6. fallinup says:

I see a fire sale coming in Chicago. Give Rose 1-2 more years…he’s gonna own Chicago.

  7. ERIC says:

Yes, BUT, we can say that about MOST players. They would be great if they could work on X skill.

With that saying, I caught the 4th Q of the Bulls/Jazz and he was speeding and skating by any defenders (as well as help defenders). boy is quick, athletic and strong.

  8. John says:

    CP3

  9. karizmatic says:

Yeah if he ever develops a jumpy he’ll be simply unstoppable. With that speed and athletic ability there would be no strategy to stop him.

  10. dapro says:

His J is improving as the season goes on…

The thing is he’s looking to past first but because the Bulls don’t have anyone who can hit the open jumper constantly he has to look for his..

He’s taking shots that he isn’t comfortable taking yet

  11. dapro says:

    @fallin

    agreed….Starting with Paxton

  12. Max says:

ROY, no contest. Agree with everyone that he’s approaching first team all-star status very quickly, jumper or no jumper.

  13. Kudabeen says:

Didn’t he start off the game making like 3 or 4 Js including a 3?

He isn’t Stockton as far as the J goes, but he isn’t the worst shooting starting PG in the L…

I also agree he is a reliable big man finisher and some great defensive showings against the top PGs away from being an all-star…He just looks like he belongs in the conversation of the best. Love his poise…

  14. JCARR says:

SIMPLE…He would be considered last nights hero, instead of Hughes.

He is already effective without a jumper, he just needs to develop a nice floater.

  15. analord says:

a nice floater to go with that amazing speed and physicality he’s got. Man that’s the making of a really good player.

tony parker got his jumper right and look at how effective he is now. I still remember parker’s first few seasons, when he had that no-jump jump shot (rookie year) and very much a suspect in mid range during spur’s first two modern day championships. Now he’s droppin’ 50 on the suns as recent as last year.

So DRose, better be workin’ on your shots like Gilbert Arenas, and the future’s bright for ya…

  16. Kevin K says:

if he had Mayo’s jumpshot… or rather if Mayo had Rose’s athleticism…

  17. eddy says:

in my opinion u can say what if lebron had a jumpshot? if he had a jumpshot he will shoot more “jumpshots” and do i really want lebron shooting a j if hes 6′9 260 pounds….no…..every player has his faults, u just gotta see if u can live with them…..

  18. eddy says:

btw tony parker never got his jump shot right…that was a couple of good shooting nights..

  19. Cam says:

You talking about his midrange, did u watch the game or any of his season?
