Jason Kidd Trade Rumors

Jason KiddJ-Kidd

Though Jason Kidd led the Mavs last night to a win against the Manu-less Spurs, he still can’t feel secure in Dallas with his name being constantly mentioned in trade rumors.

It’s no easy task to deal the guy with the second-biggest payday in the League this year. But Mark Cuban has been willing to listen to offers for Kidd’s $21 million deal thus far. Maybe one of the following deals will be the one that catches his eye.

* New York – Yesterday we talked about the Knicks’ proposed J-Kidd-for-Steph deal, which makes little to no sense at all for Dallas. Unless the Knicks were willing to throw a number of draft picks in there, I can’t see why Mark Cuban would bite.

* Golden State – The biggest issue here might be a philosophical one. The Warriors are young – their oldest player is 30-year old Stephen Jackson. Thus, it might not make sense for them to give up developing talent and/or future picks to add a 35-year old with no time left on his deal. Didn’t they just get rid of a guy who they thought was past his prime at 29?

That being said, there are multiple possibilities here for some sort of deal. Could the Warriors give up Al Harrington and something else (Marcus Williams and a pick) and get Kidd in return?

* Portland – This could be the best fit of any possibility. Kidd would provide much-needed veteran leadership, and he’d allow Brandon Roy to play his natural position off the ball. These two teams could figure something out, too as they have the young talent on their roster to give Dallas something worthwhile in return.

Would Jerryd Bayless, Martell Webster and Steve Francis’ expiring contract ($15 million) be enough for Kidd?

* LA Lakers – Let’s start this rumor back up. Even if the Lakers look like the best team in the NBA by the time the All-Star break rolls around, they’re going to have a tough time staying out of trade talks. No matter how well Derek Fisher and Jordan Farmar are playing, L.A. would like to have someone in the backcourt to take the pressure off of Kobe come playoff time.

Mitch Kupchak is clearly willing to part with Lamar Odom. Would he throw Jordan Farmar in there too to get Kidd for a championship run? This doesn’t sound that far off.

* Orlando – The Magic don’t have much to give in return for Kidd, as desperately as they need him. Nobody wants to pay Jameer Nelson‘s $7-plus million a year for multiple seasons right now.

* Miami – Swapping Shawn Marion for Jason Kidd would be a step in the right direction for both teams. Though I don’t know that this would make both rosters rock-solid, it would fix some issues. For Dallas, a Jason Terry-Josh Howard-Matrix-Dirk-Dampier starting five is much more physically explosive. And yes, Erick Dampier’s name and “physically explosive” were just used in the same sentence, sorry.

Where do you want to see Kidd go?

Hell no does LA trade Jordan Farmar and LO for Kid… That would be stupid (and not in a good way). Why would LA want a guy that can’t shoot, and get’s beat off the dribble every time he’s on the floor, not to mention he’s like 14 years older than Jordan Farmar. LO is playing well in his sixth man role. We could go like 12 deep. Now I am not saying all those guys could start, but we have 12 players capable of playing, why the F would we want J Kid., he’s a has been and keeping AB was better than trading for Kid.

The New York deal is a pipe dream. No way that Walsh washes away draft picks for his “team of the future” for a PG of today. Not going to happen.

The Blazers deal makes a little more sense and Dallas would get everything back that they traded away in the Kidd deal to begin with: They already have Diop back and if Bayless is included he would fill the Devin Harris role quite well.

As a Miami fan, I like the thought of Kidd and Wade together, but I think giving up the Matrix is a tough sell. I gotta think that we can get a little more for Matrix and if we hold out, teams are going to be willing to pay more for him as they try to make the late season playoff push.

All in all, this sucks for Kidd. Just like Iverson he’s now being shipped around as an expiring contract. A shame for a Hall of Famer.

  3. Michorizo says:

Im not sure if I would even do Farmar for Kidd straight across…maybe a few years ago, but right now I think Farmar is playing well.

  4. A$$Cube aka Trade Checker says:

I like the proposed deal with the Heat. But Cuban would be smart to ask for Daequan Cook to be thrown in. On one side Kidd would feed Wade and Beasley to death, on the other Matrix would overshadow Dirk’s liabilities (defense) and vice versa. Plus with Dirk often standing far from the basket Matrix would be able to zigzag his way to the rim.

AND Cuban/Riley would not be helping out a direct opponent.

  5. dagwaller says:

I like the Portland idea, AK. Didn’t know that Steve Francis “played” for the Blazers. Or do they just own his contract?

You’re right about GS, too, but not exactly for the reasons you listed. While it IS a philosophical difference, it has nothing to do with present/future – it’s just that Golden State is trying to play without a true point guard all year this year, and Kidd would interfere with that.

(not to mention the fact that no one wants to see Kidd shooting the ball at a more uptempo pace)

  6. booboo says:

Kidd will stay in dallas…why would they trade the guy they spent all offseason creating an offense around…if anyone has watched the mavericks, Jason terry can NOT run the point for this team period. and why would the front office admit its mistake in acquiring Kidd for the likes of farmar or youngsters from portland after 4 games..ridiculous

  7. nerditry says:

Every option in the league last year, and they end up trading Kidd to Dallas for the better parts of Dallas’ 2nd squad.

What did it do for either team? Jack shit.

You didn’t even come up with a reason for Miami to make that trade. Miami needs a PF and C. They’ve got a ton of guards and would only delay the development of Chalmers bringing in someone brand new to run the offense.

While Kidd is trade-worthy in the generic sense, I can’t see anyone making a trade for him that would get them over the hump towards a Championship. Maybe he can take Sam Cassell’s spot as cheerleader for the C’s next season and ride coattails to a title.

  8. Coop says:

Does the person who wrote this have any knowledge whatsoever of the CBA? I got about halfway down and gave up because the scenarios were fundamentally flawed. Come on Dime!

  9. loons says:

its amazing how far kidd has fallen off. less than a year ago he was putting up triple doubles with regularity. rod thorn is a genius.

  10. dapro says:

So Farmer, a possible career backup is better than Jason Kidd even at this stage in his career??

I think Dallas was/is the wrong team for Kidd because they’re soft

Yes Kidd has lost a step on both ends but his vision and court awareness is unparalleled

still has one to two good seasons left on the right squad

  11. Drink the Haterade (KB24 Chip 09) says:

but not for Farmar… I like the kid and J Kid is not going to do us any favor.

  12. got them..SCOOBY DO's says:

DALLAS – would be stupid!!! To trade Kidd for any of those scenarios…..

    The Portland trade maybe….

Miami – NO…..they would be duplicating what they already have

LA – Hell 2 da 00 No….duplication for Dallas, where is Lamar going to play, off the bench? That would be Stupid for them…..Jordan Farmar is okay….

NY – Stupid Trade for Dallas, great for NY…why would Dallas do it? I like Stephon but he hasn’t shown that he can run a team in the last couple of years…

Golden State – I like it for GS, it’s marginal for Dallas, again how do they get better with Al Harrington? I don’t think so….

KIDD STAYS IN DALLAS, AND HOPE THEY START CLICKING…MAYBE GET A REAL COACH!

  13. nerditry says:

@dapro : How can you say that he has one or two good seasons left when Kidd couldn’t even stay on the floor during the OLYMPICS?

Is it somehow easier on a point guard to play with the likes of Dirk/Terry/Howard/Dampier than Boozer/Kobe/LeBron/D. Howard?

He is out of gas. His shot is flat. He’s like NBA Jam when you run out of turbo.

  14. sweetv0mit says:

i think he meant raef lafrentz not steve francis

  15. snoop_robb says:

Dime, informative article, but if your gonna throw a Five out there, make sure it actually adds up to 5. You forgot to include Dirk! but that lineup, plus Dirk… that’s Money guys.

    Nice Work.

  16. dapro says:

    funny nerditry

He court vision is still there but he does lack some lateral quickness

    but….

if Luke Ridnour manages to keep a job as a pg in the league than JKidd deserves a fair short with a better cast

  17. snoop_robb says:

Hey, if Houston could work out any sort of deal to get Kidd from Dallas without including Ron, T-Mac or Yao, they would def. go to front of the line in the West…

  18. NB says:

Its amazing what the media can do to the perception of a person and/or team. Jason Kidd is not out of gas, he is still playing at a high level. He didn’t play much in the Olympics because he didn’t have to. If your 35, why play heavy minutes when the #1 and #2 PGs who are 10 years younger than you are playing with you? He was there mostly for leadership. That team turned around when he joined them. And that is the same reason why he is in Dallas. I agree with Gary Payton that he needs to assert himself a bit more on the team, but I think by mid-season, Dallas will have a better offensive flow.

  19. Big Shot BOB says:

The only two deals that I see working are GSW and the Heat. Blazers are good as is with the youth movement and I think they’re sticking to that. With a player like Kidd you have to put him in the right system with the right type of weapons/players which Dallas has tried to do but they really don’t have the personnel to run with J-Kidd. With the Warriors he would be in the right system with the right players. The Heat would fit for the same reason. Let’s not forget that it was J-Kidd who made Shawn Marion the Matrix. But I still think the best team for Kidd to go to would be the Cavs. With Lebron running with him they would be unstoppable. I say trade Mo Will straight up for Kidd.

  20. heavy d says:

Didn’t Portland release Steve Francis (well bought out), so how do they have his expiring deal to use? Did you mean Raef LaFrentz expiring deal? That seems more plausible.

  21. nerditry says:

@No Brain…I mean NB : Why the fuck would Team USA pick up a guy that they don’t need then? Maybe they needed his know how back in 2004 or 2006, but he was irrelevant when out on the floor in 2008.

He started each game and was generally out within 5+ minutes to get Paul and Williams who would actually create for themselves and others. They didn’t need his leadership from the bench.

Face facts, 35 is old for most NBA players and Kidd has a ton of mileage on the odometer. I’d be happy with him coming off the bench for my team to keep the second stringers playing smart, but as of today, he is not an elite player.

  22. dapro says:

    Nerditry

Kidd is still undefeated in international play, the leadership and intangibles he brings to every squad he joins is unquestioned

As the season progresses Dallas will improve as long as he puts his stamp on the Mavs

Again, he did lose a step but put him with a team of athletes and defenders and watch him work

You can hide his flaws on the right squad

  23. Drink the Haterade (KB24 Chip 09) says:

    @ Snoop–
Jason Terry and Josh Howard and Matrix- and Dirk and Dampier starting five…

    That’s five, not four.

Anyways J-Kidd might have intangibles and leadership, but he can no longer play D.

  24. Jordan Hagedorn says:

As a Mavs and JKidd fan, I hope he stays put. Starbury can be a cancer.

  25. Homeless J says:

The Blazers already bought out Stevie. Since then he’s been on the Rockets bench and now who knows. I’m guessing they meant Raef’s expiring contract.

I don’t see them doing this deal at all, and even though I love Kidd, I don’t see him fitting on the team. I’ve also developed enough faith in Bayless and Martell (or more specifically, the future of Bayless and Martell) that I wouldn’t want to see them get traded for a hall of fame guy who’s admittedly past his prime.

Most of these guesses seem like stabs in the dark, or an effort to pad out the length of an article, but after Kobe bitched and moaned last year about the Lakers not jumping on the chance to trade for Kidd, I could see that going down. I know if I’m the Lakers I’m practically begging Dallas to take Odom and anybody except for Kobe to get Kidd.

  26. Drink the Haterade (KB24 Chip 09) says:

    Homeless J–
The Lakers would get the raw end of that deal. LO is doing nice coming off the bench for us. He makes a second unit that much better and I , like most Laker fans will tell you they’d rather Keep LO, then trade for Kidd. Also LO is versatile and can start the fast break from the 4 spot.

  27. KCL says:

The Blazers still own Stevie’s contract and is tradeable (think keith van horn’s contract)That deal makes sense for Dalles, but i dont think portland would do it. Blazers have a lot of faith in Bayless and just signed Martell to a contract extension so it doesn’t make sense to trade them. KP will hold pat unless Portland needs a drastic change, which they dont right now

  28. Ree says:

Anyone who actually watches full Dallas games (instead of following random ESPN highlights or popular trend) can see Kidd is playing much better now. He was a really poor fit with Avery’s system last season. And he is still an above average defender although he has lost a step.
Whoever started these rumors? Surely not Dallas after redesigning their offense to suit Kidd’s strengths.

  29. jackass says:

why is everyone talking in a tone that jason kidd is some injury ridden, no more gas in the tank old man??? i don’t recall any of these talks when he was in new jersey, everyone thought he was one of the prime poing guards in the nba, and only after couple months all these talk??? i wonder is the image is actually true, or is this some of those horrible media market at work????

  30. jay says:

i like jay kidd but la? heck no! i dont want starbury and i dont want kidd. farmer is improving every year. he is a about a year or two away from starting…look at devin harris in nj!!! he lit d-town for 38..i do not see farmer do that but he can be an 17 and 9 type of guy. his stats will be misleading due to kobe but if kobe was not in the equation..he could be at a tp9 level. that being said..merion for lo would not be bad if mitch really wanted to do a trade! al harrington would not be terrible either! i would have loved rj for lo if i knew the nets wanted to part with rj.he would be great with this team as a starter
