First Stephon, now Stackhouse

Over the summer I talked to Jerry Stackhouse, an interview which appears in Dime #45 (on newsstands now). At the time, Rick Carlisle had just replaced Avery Johnson in Dallas, and while Stack wasn’t yet sure of his role in the Mavericks’ new system, he seemed optimistic, and with good reason. After all, Carlisle coached Stack in Detroit, where he once led the NBA in total points (2,380) in 2000-01 and averaged 29.8 per game, just a hair below League leader Allen Iverson. With Carlisle coming in to lead the Mavs, you would think the 34-year-old vet Stackhouse would at least have a secure spot in the rotation.

You would think. So far Stackhouse is playing just under 18 minutes a night for the struggling Mavs, averaging 5.3 points on 29% shooting from the field while younger players like Gerald Green and Antoine Wright are taking what used to be his PT.

Now Stack is looking for a trade. “Sometimes, that cycle comes,” he told the Dallas Morning News. “When I came to Philadelphia (as a rookie), Jeff Malone was still a very capable player. But they said: ‘Jeff, Jerry Stackhouse is the starting shooting guard here, and we’re starting over.’ He still went and played somewhere for a couple more seasons. And you got to start that process sometimes. I’m not mad, and not the first one that the process has started with. It’s going to start with some more here before too long.” (Was that a warning for Dirk and J-Kidd?)

Stackhouse is due $7 million this year, the final one on his contract. He could at least be an attractive expiring contract, and while he’s been dealing with a sore heel and his production is down, could still be a valuable player. The Mavericks can waive him or negotiate a buyout, and team officials even implied they’d help Stack’s agent in looking for a trade partner, but in the meantime, it looks like his playing time will only decrease the longer he stays around; Stack was deactivated for Sunday’s game against the Knicks, and is expected to miss tonight’s game against the Bobcats.

Is Jerry Stackhouse getting a raw deal from the Mavs? Would you want him on your team?

He can still get to the hoop and shoot FTs. He’s still a serviceable 6-8th man.

  2. muwu says:

Spurs should try to pounce, won’t help em get any younger, but the guy can still get buckets

  3. Lee says:

He’s taking it in a mature state of mind. I hope he goes to a contender. If he gts bought out he could go back up Kobe or Lebron

  4. JCARR says:

Stack can still ‘do work’. This could be another valuable reason for why the Mavs are struggling… they play an inexperienced baller like Wright (who sucks). If anything Green and Stack should be sharing playing time.
Good to know he is taking a vets mentality and seeking for a trade. he is still capable of being a consistent contributor. Hope he gets that trade to a contender.

    “First Stephon, now Stackhouse”…

Nah, man…obviously Stack is WAAAY more mature than Steph

  6. Ashlov says:

Dallas need to scrap it and rebuild.

  7. YOUNGFED says:

No Raw deal here it’s “bizness” as usual. This is what happens when a leaper can’t leap no more.

  8. Damon says:

sry guys, but carlisle wasn’t the pistons coach in 00-01.
he only had 2 years, from 01 to 03.

  9. Flip says:

I like what Stack is saying and the maturity he’s approaching the situation with. He’s seemes to have his act together, unlike other Mavs (That means you, Josh Howard!)

  10. Mamba says:

    The owner is a Crook,

Irk doesnt deserve the D in his name,

J Howard has sick game, but is a true clown,

Bottom Line is the Mavs need to blow this thing up and take a look at where to go in the future, they are only falling further behind to teams like Utah, Houston, and Portland (Even though Greg Oden looks more like a game of Operation than the next generation’s go to big man)

Having said that I have always liked Stack and hopes he gets one last chance in a good spot – the contract is attractive to get off the books, and he can still produce

  11. Ansonious says:

I bet the cavs are like come on man you know you want Wally Szerbiak

  12. Tha Boddy says:

I’ll put money on this fact…If Stack goes to a bad team he can put up 15-17ppg of the bench or starting with ease and still shoot a very god FT%…Stach was always a shifty player who can still abuse the person guarding him with his power and tough as nails approach

  13. sans says:

Wally World and the rights to Damon Jones’ old wardrobe…and five dollars in nickels…Danny Ferry doesn’t offer shit in return when he makes trades. I hate the guy, but even I have to give props for the Mo Williams for Joe Smith and Damon Jones; I even liked his other one, getting rid of Donyell for Delonte and the shell of Ben Wallace.

Danny Ferry might seriously consider sending along a gyro, with a litlle extra ziki on the side, from one of the many Grecian restaraunts in Cleveland, OH.

  14. qUeSt??? says:

he is right, sooner rather than later you will see that this will happen to j kidd first, then dirk

  15. karizmatic says:

I think Stack is done, he might be a bit player but nothing special. I like his attitude about it though.

  16. Dave says:

Stackhouse just isn’t that good anymore. He’s a borderline rotation player …. although the Mavs wings are poor outside of Howard so you’d expect him to keep his spot.

I think it’s fair for him to ask for a better home. He’s a 14 year vet who’d like to be playing as he finishes the career. What’s wrong about that?

I don’t think there’ll be much serious/significant interest in Stackhouse. Lots of teams trying to get a steal, but light interest rather than strong interest.

  17. Lady Luck says:

Glad that there are so many on this board who agree with me about sending Stack to Cleveland. They can trade Pavlovic.
