With talk this weekend of Patrick Ewing Jr. practicing (and potentially signing) with the Knicks, the hotter commodity could be his father, Magic assistant coach Patrick Ewing.
Credited with much of Dwight Howard’s progress and success, the Hall of Fame center has definitely padded his résumé tutoring the young All Star; a feat that will help him achieve his next goal: NBA head coach.
Although he’s in the final season of his contract with the Magic, GM Otis Smith has said unequivocally they’d like Ewing back if they can keep him around.
Would you hire Patrick Ewing to be your squad’s head coach?

I don’t think I would hire him as a coach. he might be a good position guy, but I don’t think he’s a good basketball strategy guy.

I don’t think anyone can really 100% say either way, Ewing has been very low key in his tenure as Assistant Coach with the Rockets and Magic (I think it was the Rockets who initially hired him). But he seems to be taking it very seriously. And the fact that he’s worked closely with both the Van Gundy’s is an interesting fact. And we both know that Jeff would’ve schooled Pat, being a former player, and knowing that Ewing would one day want to be a head coach, I couldn’t see Jeff not trying to help him out.
And seeing the success that both the Van Gundy’s are capable of, I’d have to say a hypothetical ‘yes’ to hiring Ewing, if he could show and prove in the strategy part of the interview.
Players would respect him, and you know he’s still hungry for a ring.
He’s taken all the right steps, worked with Yao and Dwight, though how much of an affect he had on Yao, I don’t know.
Personally, I’m pulling for the guy.

@Scott
I’m pulling for Ewing too. I think he’s been instrumental in both Yao and Dwight’s development
I can see him as a coach. I think he’s paid his dues and deserves a shot as a coach

I always found a disconnect between his play on the court and his mind off it. When I saw video of his play against the Pacers during those classic playoffs series, I was blown away by what a smart and polished player he was. He knew pumpfakes, how to create space, he was good at passing to cutters, passing out of double teams, he was the freaking total package. He had a very high basketball IQ. But whenever I’ve heard him talk, I’ve thought he sounded barely functional, like he was developmentally challenged. I doubt he ever gets hired as a head coach because he doesn’t come across as having the mind to fill that position.

I would hire Ewing without a doubt… he has proven himself as a player and is credited for the development of future HOF in Dwight Howard. The only problem is that not enough is known about him as a mentor and leader as a coach

I’m dubious. The man hasn’t had the best of reputations as an assistant coach in the league. Far more worthy assistant coaches out there …. Probably not, no.
