John StarksIf you were to look in the dictionary next to the word posterized, there would be a picture of John Starks throwing down on Horace Grant and Michael Jordan. A couple of weeks ago, I got up with the Knicks legend to talk about “The Dunk,” his comparison of Kevin Durant to Scottie Pippen and seeing Patrick Ewing Jr. in a New York uniform.
Dime: Tell me about “The Dunk.”
John Starks: I think that it was just like a signature play obviously – a stamp on my career – and how far I came to get to that point. And to be able to perform a feat like that, in the Garden, against the Chicago Bulls, over one of the greatest players ever in Michael Jordan, ya know, it was just a special moment.
Dime: I read something the other day that said you compared Kevin Durant to Scottie Pippen. Coming from Tulsa, how excited are you to have the Thunder in Oklahoma City?
Starks: Well I think it’s going to be an exciting time down there. It’s a great sports state – especially a football state – and now it’s turning into a basketball state. I think what happened to New Orleans last year, an unfortunate situation down in New Orleans, but it was kinda a blessing in disguise in a sense from the Oklahoma perspective that they got a chance to get an NBA team down there to show the League that, “Hey, we can support an NBA team no problem.” So they did a great job of showing the love for the New Orleans Hornets while they were there for a short period of time and the League took notice of that.
Dime: Looking at the Knicks roster in the preseason and seeing Patrick Ewing Jr. in a New York uniform, what does that mean to you having played with his father?
Starks: I think in life everything comes around full circle. I think just having him come and have an opportunity to try out for the team and play where he grew up and saw many a games and saw his father play, it must have been a great moment for him.
Dime: I heard you got involved with Slamball. Did you ever get on the trampoline?
Starks: Yea, I did get on the trampoline actually. Slamball was a lot of fun. I mean, those guys are very intense, and play a very aggressive game. It’s a mixture of football, hockey and basketball all rolled into one. It was just an incredible experience for me. I think the kids enjoy it. It’s a new way of playing basketball and a fun way.
