Stars Who Need to Shine

Carmelo Anthony‘Melo needs to step up

For the first time this season, we saw some bona fide stars destroy the guys that the opposition put in front of them. Now we can scratch Amare, LeBron and Tony Parker off of the list of NBA stars who still need to take the veil off and shine this season. Without those three, which marquee names need to break out?

* Carmelo - You can’t say that you’re going to put up 44 and then score 28 on 13-30 shooting. If you played baseball and called your shot and then hit a double, you’d still look like an idiot.

* Brandon Roy - When Roy’s been efficient, the Blazers have won. The problem right now is that was only one game. He’s shooting 34% in Portland’s three losses and doesn’t have a 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio in those three games either.

* DeShawn Stevenson - He really shouldn’t be in this conversation, because he’s not a star. But DeShawn has been so bad that we couldn’t keep him out of this space. With Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison trying to hold things together in Washington - and failing - DeShawn is providing zero support. He’s shooting 29% from three, and aside from his 9.3 points per game, he doesn’t have another stat above 3 per game right now despite playing 32 minutes per.

* Baron Davis - Should Baron be blamed for the Clippers having the worst record in the League right now (0-5)? Even though he spent the better part of a game and a half on the bench with that hip injury, Boom’s been as out of sync as the rest of the Clippers roster thus far.

Which star needs to break out and shine right now?

didn’t you guys say that CP3 was going to destroy the hawks last night?

  2. A-Slam says:

when arenas comes back he needs to prove that he can gain his old form

  3. Amar says:

and you guys forgot to mention kwame brown . . .

  4. TCL says:

Kobe hasn’t really been Kobe so far, but I guess that’s what happens when your team rolls 12 deep and blows out the opponent every night.

  5. doc says:

Iggy, because when I was calling him out everybody on here was saying I was wrong and he still look like the same fucking bum to me.Trade his bitch-ass now before we cant get nothing more then a bag of bricks.T-Young been here 2 years and already he better than Iggy. He’s like our 5th option on O right now.EB,T-Young,Lou Will Dre Miller then Iggy Sammy and Willie bum ass can fight for scraps. And Marrese Speights gonna pass them in a year.

  6. Dime Magazine says:

Amar, you’re absolutely right about CP3. But that was only one night. He ended up with 22 and 11 - I’ll take that even if he ends up getting swatted by Al Horford multiple times.

  7. A-Slam says:

i agree with doc iggy really isn’t playing up to the ammount of money he recieved this year

  8. Michorizo says:

Is Carmelo going to be that player that can dump 20 plus a night and make the 6-8 seed n his team come playoffs and get bumped in the first round for his entire career?

  9. Reverend Paul Revere says:

If you guys are going to throw the term star around liberally using Stevenson, at least put a guy who is getting paid like a star but has not shown up once yet: Andre Iguodala. He’s just be awful. Completely awful.

  10. Jah says:

    Emeka Okafor

    Rashard Lewis

    Ben Gordon
    Raymond Felton
    Jason Richardson

  11. nick says:

camby just came back monday so to be fair, the whole team has not really been healthy yet. however that being said they should have at least 1 win.

  12. weezy f says:

easi;ly kobe…has he hit 40 yet? even tho he clearly doesnt need too

  13. mfmv19 says:

I agree with dime’s article from yesterday. Dwade looks outta sync. he’s due for an explosion soon..

  14. Dime Magazine says:

Here’s that post on what’s up with Dwyane Wade

  15. MoxWestCoastRep says:

@weexy lol. Yeah the Lakers really need someone to step up. Ha ha
I’ve been waiting for Melo to step up his whole career. He is still riding off Syracuse success. Play some D and get some boards. He is nothing more than a scorer right now.
I disagree with Roy. I think this blazer team needs to figure out an identity, get Oden back and get rid of a few guys. They are too deep. Too many cooks in the kitchen, but Roy is giving 100 every night

  16. Kudabeen says:

Andre Iguodala has let me down thus far, but he says he is going to step it up…He should be a 18 6 7 2 guy this year…Thad is really filling the lanes that Dre-I use to. Andre Miller doesn’t have the ball in his hand as much and when he does he is posting up and trying to score. Sixers are a little lost right now…

Kevin Durant has all the opportunities in the world to shoot, but he hasn’t really stepped it up as far of his overall game. He plays the most and he doesn’t really produce as much…

Jason Richardson/Emeka Okafor They are killing Bobcats by not demanding more of their team. J-Rich had a 4 or 5 point game the other day…Who’s That?!!? They had a horrible Draft two years in a row and I was saying that all along. I like Dudley, but that Adam Morrison pick was a franchise killer (sorry MJ)… J-Rich/Okafor are killing this team with their inconsistency…

    Flip Note:

Anyone noticing how well Tayshaun Prince has been shooting the ball? All pre-season and this season his shot that been on…He is playing the best for the Pistons.

  17. Mike says:

Vince Carter? He is the only legitimate scoring threat on the Nets and he had yet to put up more than 21! Alot of this has to do with L-Frank though, he isnt letting him shoot the damn ball

  18. Drink the Haterade (KB24 Chip 09) says:

Ok so not basketball related but funny as hell

  19. Bruce says:

Melo is a star just not a SUPERSTAR — Sir Charles.

    I concur, sir, I concur.

  20. BEdger says:

you guys are right on the money with Brandon Roy, he needs to step his game up big time. Both he and Aldridge have been mediocre at best, and that isn’t good enough. Roy needs to be a LOT more aggressive on the offensive end and Aldridge needs to find his way back to the paint to get some rebounds. I mean, 5 boards a game for a 7 footer…SAD…VERY SAD

  21. Jah says:

Kevin Durant AND Jeff Green, as well.

  22. Amar says:

there’s no doubting CP3’s brilliance, but if 20+/11+ is his average, absolutely killing a team shouldn’t be “reaching his season average”, it should be something insane like 30 points and 18 assists. stuff that the best PGs used to do on occasion (isiah, KJ, timmy, stockton, the glove, etc).

also last night i thought the world was going to blow up with kwame and bargnani checked in. the only way to make it even more insane would be if olowakandi was somehow involved . . .

  23. Amar says:

BEdger — are you blazers’ edge? if so, i love your work.

  24. frankie says:

Can anyone decipher what doc’s posts say? I just “read” one on the New Era page and I mean…I just don’t know. doc, you could have some great points, but it’s called the English language. We’re all using it. Feel free to join in at any time.

  25. BEdger says:

no, it’s not me, I’m just a member of Blazers Edge and a loyal reader/fan

  26. MSkittle says:

Andrew Bynum.. For fantasy team purposes.

  27. Amar says:

    ah, i see

  28. Bruce says:

Get off Alridge ass, dude is allergic to the paint!

  29. GEE...Big Brotha Almightyyyy! says:

He ain’t really a star, but shouldn’t Mike James have already been doing the do. I mean dude has had times where he goes off, but now he seem like a trade accessory.

  30. Reverend Paul Revere says:

Wade did blow up last night: 29 points on 9 of 15 from the floor, 11 of 13 from the line, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals and 3 blocks

  31. Drink the Haterade (KB24 Chip 09) says:

AB had 4 blocks, 9 points and 17 boards, I think he stepped it up

  32. johnsacrimoni says:

    Kudabeen-
That’s because he’s the Piston’s best player, especially now that they’ve traded Chauncey.

  33. GEE...Big Brotha Almightyyyy! says:

I like when ESPN highlights wack stat lines often. Junk be cracking me up.

    A dude will have like
27 min played, 1 assist, o points, 1 re and tech to go with 2 other fouls.

  34. Luigi says:

    When Gilbert Arenas comes back….

    my god watch out.

IF we can maintain a 500 record. say about like 21-21 or something like that. we should sneak out a 6th spot against Cleveland and change the result like Obama.

but if we go dead like say. 13-30 or somethin. we shut gil down and bomb the year so we can get some highly touted bigman. outta college to fill the need.
