Stephon Marbury Wants to Join The Spurs

I’m sure that if you asked Stephon Marbury if he’d like to play anywhere in the League except New York, he would seriously think about it. So last night when someone from the NY Post asked him if he’d like to play in San Antonio, Steph naturally said that he’d love to.

“Who wouldn’t want to play for San Antonio?” Marbury told The Post last night. “To play with Tim Duncan, who would complain about that? That’s a great organization, they win championships. They have a nice system and I like (Gregg) Popovich as coach. I can play 1 or the 2. If I was a free agent, yeah.”

But this could be more than a fantasy for Steph. Spurs GM R.C. Buford said that he’d be looking for point guard support with Tony Parker on the bench for the next month with that ankle injury. And with the way that things have been going in San Antonio, they could end up in a monstrous hole if they don’t address the personnel issues. As we said in Smack this morning, it felt like they marched out Tim Duncan and a bunch of D-Leaguers against the Knicks last night. That won’t be enough to win games throughout their tough pre-Christmas schedule.

If you’re R.C. Buford, do you go out and get Steph?

speaking of unemployment, check out the New Jersey Nets new idea:

Unemployed basketball fans who lost jobs because of the tough economy are netting free game tickets as part of a plan to help them get back to work.

Starting today, the New Jersey Nets are asking fans to e-mail them their résumés. They’ll forward them to the club’s 150 sponsors.

In exchange for the job applications, the club is giving out free upper-level tickets to one of five games, starting with the Nov. 22 tilt against the LA Clippers.

“Coming to the game is entertaining and it’s a means of escape that people need now more than ever,” said Nets CEO Brett Yormark.

Kudos to the Nets organization for that. And yes I would definitely try to acquire Marbury as long as they don’t have to give up toom much. They’re already depleted talent wise as it is after the big three.

That’s really admirable…I’m going to say it was Jay-Z’s idea.

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

Why does this dude keep getting more face time? Think about it, in any other place of work, if u had an employee that had several jobs and could not keep it, or had consistently bad references, would you hire him? Hell no.

Of course he is going to say he would love to play for the Spurs. The Spurs dont need another ball hogging, ego driven PG. They need leadership. Besides, what do you do with Shitbury when TP and Manu come back? His inflated sense of self worth wont be happy riding the pine.

Marbury is the past… focus on the present

  6. dmitry of jersey says:

spurs will never take marbury. they don’t take losers and wouldnt risk having him start shit when he’s watching from the bench while roger mason gets the back up PG playing time.

Here’s a more interesting question: Since Yi is on the all star ballot which eastern forward gets left off?

  8. Jim says:

That is terrific with the Nets, definitely kudos to them.

And I disagree, I think the Spurs would take a rider on Marbury. They are in major trouble in the short term and it’s unlikely he could make it worse. I would welcome him. We won a chip with Stephen Jackson gunning, remember.

  9. john says:

What a way to win for the Spurs, especially without Manu and Parker.

They need to bring this kind of attitude for every game when the big two is out.

I’m happy with Oberto performance tonight, helping in defense and allowing Timmy to push on offense.

Can’t wait for Manu to return.

What is your opinion about the game?

  11. charlespark says:

stephen jackson and marbury were close buds in new jersey, if jackson can get along with the spurs (which he did), i think that marbury could too.

  12. Ross says:

They need scoring, so yes, assuming Steph can get out of his deal.

  13. charlespark says:

plus, marbury being a cancer has more to do with him having isiah thomas whispering in his ear and boosting his ego while larry brown was coaching, which led to brown and marbury going at it. new yorkers blame too much on marbury when isiah was the one who screwed things up.

  14. rangerjohn says:

i am 50/50 on this one. while the spurs need someone NOW, what happens in january when manu and tony are both back? could steph go to the 2 and start where finley has been worthless (with the exception of last night), would they be “overloaded” at the 1 - 2 for playing time? could he be cool and sit games out? (he seams to be ok doing it now but then he is makeing what 21 mil this year?) i say sign him ONLY if he agrees to a tiny salary. getting steph to back up or even start but play less minutes for 3 mil a year is not a bad thing. between po, duncan, and guys liek finley and thomas, i think stephs attitude will be in check.

  15. weng santos says:

Marbury can play. Everyone knows that.

The Spurs have a way of correcting bad attitudes and getting everyone to play as a team. That, too, is a given.

I say “do it.” I honestly think it will work, and work well. Steph can come in and play combo and emergency guard ala Bones Barry.

When the backcourt comes back, start TP and Steph, with Manu as usual coming off the bench. Finley can sub for Bowen if they play small. The rest can pick-up the slack.

I say the Knicks cut him like the Mavs did to Finley so Steph could be had by the Spurs for peanuts and the Knicks lessen their luxury tas. If they don’t wanna waive him, then trade him for all the D-Leaguers on the Spurs, most of which have only short contracts.

It’s just ridiculous that the Knicks have that talent just wasting away on the pine when they can at least get something for him.

Honestly, if the Spurs can make it work having a Jacque Vaugn as their 2nd point/3rd guard, why won’t it work with a supremely talented Marbury?

I can see Steph making a huge splash and getting his mojo back if he ends playingh for the Spurs. And the Spurs get some talent. It’s a win-win; I really believe that.

“Who wouldnt want to play with Tim Duncan” Maybe the gut who didnt want to play with KG.If I was the Spurs I wouldnt touch this dickhead with a 30 foot pole with a condom on the end.He will say he want to play anywhere and its news. The dude just wanted to play for his highschool team last week.Next week he gonna be talking about he started his own league in Coney Island and since the NBA is so highpriced you can come to his games for 99 cents.
