The Lakers Will Win It All

Kobe BryantKobe Bryant (photo. Mannion)

Why will this be the best season ever?

THE LAKERS WILL WIN IT ALL

It just feels like now is the time, doesn’t it? As the Lakers rolled into the Finals last year, there was a little something in the back of everyone’s mind that it wasn’t all quite perfect in Laker-land. They had no Andrew Bynum, and Pau Gasol meshing with the team was still a work in progress.

No more.

They head into 2008-09 with a Team USA gold-plated Kobe Bryant, who won on the world’s biggest stage. They have a full preseason to gel with Pau, and Bynum is back 100 percent and has put in some serious time in the weight room.

If all the pieces mesh, and if Kobe stays healthy, they will be tough to beat.

Should the Lakers be considered the front-runner to win the title?

The New “Best Season Ever”
1. Chris Paul will win MVP…
2. …but Paul Pierce will prove he’s the best player in the world

If everyone stays healthy, they’ll get revenge on the Celtics, and win it all this year.

  2. fallinup says:

It’s hard to stop a team on a mission. And LA has all the right pieces to get there. I already can’t wait until the playoffs.

  3. Kermit the Washington says:

Me being the paranoid fool that I am, I’m expecting them to get upset in the first round.

  4. Shakers says:

Sure, the Lakers are LOADED. I still want to see them win against a complete team defense like Boston has.

  5. P_Dizzle says:

Is this a surprise? Hell, you guys have been on LA’s nuts more than the Knicks if that is possible.

I don’t think they should be the front-runner to win it all. You have to give respect to the team that won the Finals and have kept their core guys. The NBA Champ goes through Boston as much as I hate to admit it.

Boston is the champ and forerunner ’til they make some dumb-ass trade or a key player gets injured.

  6. E$ says:

and only 6 months ago they were getting whipped by 40 pts in the finals….lol

  7. heckler...formerly 'yallallreadyknow' says:

lakers have weaknesses. starting with their interior defense. and if you think andrew bynum (who doesnt know what playing in the playoffs is like yet) is the answer….shame shame shame on you. this is where they will miss ronny turiaf the most. he drew charges. no one else on the team can do that.

    their bench.
1 of the big strengths of this team is their bench (odom, walton, ariza, farmar, sasha). but in the playoffs, some of those guys wont get minutes due to shorter rotation. and they will miss turiafs energy off the bench.

    FT shooting
this team is a weaker FT shooting team than ppl think

    they may win it all….
…but i dunno Pat. i wouldnt crown ‘em after 3.5 weeks

  8. vinny says:

Clev. vs LA in the finals. with Clev winning it all!

  9. Smitty313 says:

Lakers interior will be alright. There one of the best defensive teams in the NBA and it will only get better as the season progress. Kobe’s been coasting so far, I haven’t seen him on the bench this much since his rookie season. Andrew is blocking shots, his offense is a little weak nothing like before the injury. Last year when they through him oops he was dunking everything, this year he catches and gives the defense time to react. Ariza will stick guys like Lebron and Pierce for Kobe can rest until crucnh time. It’s still early right now but they look like they are headed to the finals.

I want to see a Kobe VS Lebron finals. That would be bigger than any finals ever in my opinion.

  10. karizmatic says:

    Definitely. Go Lakers!

  11. karizmatic says:

lol…Heckler Bynum is not the key, but Turiaf is?

  12. doug says:

heckler…formerly ‘yallallreadyknow’ vinny,Cleveland?stop it man.Lakers got this all you celts fans got some quotes regarding your boy pierce saying he’s the best in the L and unfortunately he’s the only one that believes this about himself.
-Larry Bird was asked what his opinion is about Kobe Bryant. He said that he is the best in the league and has been for quite a long time.
    - Clyde Drexler was asked who the game’s top player is today: “I love Yao (Ming), and I love Tracy (McGrady), but Kobe Bryant is by far the best.”
-Magic Johnson, named three times the NBA’s MVP, also gave his thoughts on who is the league’s best player:

“Paul [Pierce] would like to think he is better than Kobe [Bryant],” Magic said. “Kobe Bryant is the best closer, best player in the game. You have to remember he’s done it for a long time at a high level.

-stop hating yall, we brushing the dirt off our shoulders in Cali and we are already mapping out routes for the victory parade in 2009.Hollar Back Celts put on a snow jacket we’ll be basking in Cali Sun with shorts and flip flops looking at beautiful women.Because at the end of the day you guys still live in Boston. We got this!

  13. Korady says:

lol, everyone picked the Lakers last year. Saw a lot of Lakers in 5 predictions. So every time someone picks them this year after what we did to them last year, I’ll laugh. My C’s are still front runners in my book. Not sayin the Lakers, Hornets, Cavs, etc… couldn’t still take it this year, but after what the C’s did last year and this early in the season, I can’t knock em off the number one spot

  14. Obama says to McCain: "Hows my @ss taste"!! says:

The Lakers still have some things to figure out. Can they win? Sure. But both the Celtics and the Pistons cause mad matchup problems for that team..hell even Cleveland could probably matched up well against the Lakers. Sure the Lakers seem to be “on a mission”, but the truth is when that team meets up with some of the Elite teams from the East, they have problems..and their bigs, my goodness…they are like marshmellows, all soft in the center. But we shall see…

And LMAO @ “Vince Carter will give a damn”.

  15. doug says:

Korady, nobody picked the lakers at the beginning of the season everyone picked the Celts. Know your facts they started leaning toward us when we got Gasol but this is this year we got a healthy and fully loaded squad I believe its a wrap with a healthy Ariza and Bynum we got this, so haters get on your job as I know you will because we back in this thing.Korady, brush the dirt off your shoulders and stop living in the past Uncle Rico we talking 2009.By the way you don’t have to knock the C’s off the number one spot, The Lakers have done that for you already. We’re #1 in the L.The Celts lost that when they got beat by the pacers by plus 20 and the Nuggets at home and you guys need to stop with that Cavs crap, there beating really bad teams

  16. doug says:

oh how impressive the Cavs beat the nets and the bulls and anyone in the eastern conference besides the Celtics and the Pistons and any other team that means something. Stop hyping these cats they got swept by the spurs in the finals don’t mention them anymore that finals had the worst TV ratings in basketball history. We want to see Celts Lakers, revenge is sweet but if bron wants it against Kobe in the finals he can get it too, but I really don’t think he wants that.

  17. Jayo says:

The Lake-Show might run thru the West, but then they’re gonna have to play an East team. The Lakers looked like the Charmin soft team again when they lost to Detroit last weekend. Now what would they look like playing a 7 game series against Detroit or Boston? I say Boston repeats.

  18. E$ says:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/19/sports/basketball/19shout.html?_r=1&ref=sports

A nice article on Acting in the NBA….

  19. control says:

I love reading the articles here, and I ain’t hating (much), but I think this series should almost be called “I Smoked the Best Crack Ever”. Look at the titles of these:

    1. Chris Paul will win MVP…

    Yeah, maybe.

    2. …but Paul Pierce will prove he’s the best player in the world

    That shit is just reckless.

    3. The Clippers are alive

    No they ain’t.

    4. Ron Artest will get some MVP votes

Only if there are reporters voting who have smoked as much crack as the person thinking up this title.

    5. Vince Carter will give a damn

No he won’t, more crazy talk.

    6. The return of rivalries

    Nothing wrong here.

    7. The NBA has never had so much young talent

Cept when some fool named Michael Jordan entered the league. Otherwise, probably correct.

    8. You have to keep an eye on the Euroleague

    Huh? Why?

    9. Dwyane Wade is black

Pretty obvious if you’ve seen a picture of him. Most guys in the NBA are.

    10. Kevin Durant will lead the NBA in scoring

Not so crazy, but since OKC has like 3 fans, only 20 or 30 people will realize it.

    11. Stephen Jackson has a team of his own

Any article about Stephan Jackson is a bust. He’s nothing but a gunning lunatic, might as well talk about how Eddy Curry is going to put Old Country Buffet out of business.

    12. The Lakers Will Win It All

The Lakeshow is aight, they MIGHT win it all but there are way too many strong teams out there to call it out right now. Boston IS the reigning champs, they haven’t lost any really key pieces, so you gotta give them the nod before the Lakers right now.

  20. vinny says:

@Doug, i’m with you on the shorts and flip flops, but man you have to chill a little or you gonna bust a head gasket for your team! Cleveland all the way baby(and i’m a knick fan,yea it sucks but i have been a fan a long time)

  21. Dagomar says:

    Control summed it up nicely.

  22. vinny says:

    @control- good shit man!!

  23. Jayo says:

    @ Control

    That was funny & true!

  24. Blue says:

Lakers are gonna be like Beantown for years to come and suffer through the curse of the ‘Big Bambino’ aka Shaq. they’ll get close some years, but they won’t get it!

that big shadow will loom large over kobe his whole career…

that’s not coming from a laker hater, that’s coming from a long time laker fan who grew up 10 minutes away from the Forum/Staples who had his heart broken by Buss & Kupchak!

  25. doug says:

Jayo, you must not have watched the game that aint why the Lakers lost, they lost because they could make shots and because the Pistons were hitting crazy three pointers and really difficult shots they weren’t killing these guys in the paint, Rasheed hit like 2 three pointers off the back board he scored all of his points from long distance. Stop listening to Rick Kamala and watching ESPN highlights your only reading footnotes you have to watch the whole game. They didn’t muscle these cats up.

  26. doug says:

Vinny all we do is chill in Cali, no need to calm me down I’m calm we have more to do out here than just watch sports.Thats why i’m not like you guys all tense like thats your life because it is, if the Lakers lose I can hit a party at the beach, doesn’t matter but I LOVE my city, that includes the lakers.

  27. VINNY says:

@doug- Dude i live in LA, SO I’M NOT ‘YOU GUYS’.

  28. Ian says:

comon laker fans dont say that the boson guys are crazy they are right the favs are the champs i dont know what they mix in the water down in cali but yall think that bynum is the second coming of the admiral or hakeem damnnnnn.

by logic if the champions keep their core they must be the favs

now if the celts make the finals pleaseeeeee no paul gasol for garnett give him timmeh or amare ill bet hell be quiet the whole series

  29. Jayo says:

    @ Doug

I watched the whole game. Detroit was already up by about 8 or 9 in the 4th when Rasheed hit that shot. What I saw was Pau & Bynum making Kwame Brown look like an all-star. I also saw no fight in the Lakers big men when Detroit was bodying them up. And that was w/o McDyess & w/ Stuckey playing a bad game. If they have trouble w/ that frontcourt, then what will happen when KG & Co. come to town.

  30. doug says:

You just said it they were only up by 8 at that point Jayo and I agree with you, the Lakers didn’t have any fight do you know how hard it is to sustain motivation when your undefeated and blowing teams at. I didn’t think the LA was going to go 82-0, did you?I think a couple of losses every now and again are sobering. I want my team to lose when there effort isn’t there unlike alot of you guys.Did you just compare the trouble they had with AI & Rip Hamilton to possible troubles they could have with Rondo & Allen. Don’t agree, the pistons front court is way more deadly than the celt you got two hall of famers right there Jayo and both of these cats are scorers. You can’t relate the two and beyond that we will play the celts this year with a healthy Ariza and Bynum, stop connecting dots that aint there Jayo.Ian go away, we’re trying to have an intelligent conversation and you bring out the worst in a blogging forum with all your emotions.

  31. doug says:

Ian your a Spurs fan, your team needs your undivided attention, please go away. The spurs suck, your run is over, says the 5-1 series win last years Lakers over the Spurs.Go play somewhere we’re busy.

  32. doug says:

my bad Vinny by your talk I thought you lived somewhere in the midwest.

  33. Jayo says:

    @ Doug

Detroit is the team that shoulda had problems w/ sustained motivation. Remember they were the visiting team. Plus they were nearing the end of a 5 game West Coast swing. Yet, they were the team that played w/ urgency & toughness. As a Laker fan, you have to admit that at no time after the 5 min mark of the 4th quarter did it seem like the Lakers were gonna show any resolve & fight back in a close game. The Lakers are nice & there’e no denying that. But a different brand of ball is played in the East. I don’t think the Lakers are tough enough to beat either Detroit or Boston in a 7 game series. Anybody else from the East & I give the edge to LA.

  34. GEE...When your learnin the facts of life says:

control I got to give it to you on that! You came with all that was correct.

    Number 9 had me laughin.

You need to be mic’ed up kid. Hope they pass the mic to you in the cipher.

Cept on the Ben Wallace vs. Ron Ron thang lol
You know I had to throw that in.

  35. doug says:

Jayo the road team never needs motivation, they’re always motivated. Haven’t you ever heard the road team give interviews before games, they always talk about there back is against the wall type of stuff coming into a hostile environment motivates a team. Have you ever played organized basketball Jayo? Well if you haven’t I have and it’s much harded to get motivated with the comfort of your home crowd against you than it it when your on someone else floor. The Pistons were hyped for that game because there away and hated by Laker Fans.Lakers have nothing to prove to any team except the celts because detroit won’t even make it out of the eastern conference. However, i would prefer to see them in a 7 game with a healthy squad man we’re too much for these cats in the league you heard all the GMs and coaches we’re the deepest, longest(all arms), and most talented team in the L. We’re the fave to win it we don’t put up Western Conf.championship banners, only Championships.

  36. control says:

    Gee

    Thanks.

Damn man I gave you the last word on that Ron-Ben thing too :)

  37. Mamba says:

Lakers will take the west but its to early to call the chip,

That Detroit game last Friday was a bad omen,

I will feel better if they beat the Celts in their first game against the defending champs, yes again - I hate the Celts but they are the champs,

Pau, Bynum, LO, and the boys have to be there in crunch time when it matters most, I know that is a point that has been made a lot but it is the most vital thing to LA taking the ring,

Pau more than anyone, KG made him look like a little boy with a bad beard, it CANNOT just be Mamba,

Bottom line: I cant call the chip yet for my boys, but I will call the west,

  38. JBFC says:

More proof of Dime’s institutional bias against LeBron James. Whether the bias against LeBron is racial, I can’t say, but it’s equally disturbing nonetheless.

  39. Ian says:

    doug
    our run is over??? gtfoh
u did say it we at least had a run
but u r talking bs without winning and blasting celts and spurs fans that have rings
    or boats like u say

  40. Ian says:

    mamba
thats why i dont want kg to play pau in the finals
    hell eat him up

  41. doug says:

Bias against Bron?c’mon JBFC/KFC whatever and whoever you are?theres no such thing as a bias against Bron, everyone in the media is his human pair of underwear. Dime spends most of there time jocking Pierce and Bron.

  42. Jayo says:

Doug - Stop drinking the Kool-Aid @ the Staples Center. In any sport (I played D-1 football not basketball) the coaches always tell you to start by defending your home. Thus the Under Armor commercials. “We must protect this house!” The best teams are the ones that win at home & on the road. The Lakers have 3 players that I would take when the chips are down. Kobe, Fisher, & Ariza. No coincedence that those are there 3 toughest players. That’s a problem to me. I see last year repeating itself. LA makes the finals then Odom & Pau disappear when Kobe needs them most.

  43. Ian says:

    doug
what does my team need my undivided attention mean anyways????
cuz i know something that has your undivided attention??

really u won the series 5-1 i mean FIVE-1 vs and injured spurs squad

i can only dream of the standings stayin were they are the spurs as the 8th seed would be the best.

btw loved that closing line go play we are busy if u consider posting online your important part of the day u a regular donald trump my man. sounded so serious and grownup go play we men are posting online hahaha

  44. Pioneer says:

Lakers are still incredibly soft and it’ll kill ‘em in the playoffs at some point. I see them losing to Boston or Cleveland (LeBron has dominated Kobe and the Lakers head-to-head over the last few years).

LeBron is obviously going to win the MVP unless he gets hurt.

I also have to agree with the above poster who wondered if there is some bias against LeBron here. Or maybe its against Cleveland I don’t know. How can write a post about the “Best NBA season ever” and not mention the best player in the game?

    Kinda weird.

  45. doug says:

Ian, you think the spurs are going to win a ship anytime in the near future? Get off the hippie lettuce, these cats are through-vo,done-zo,what over slanguage you can understand this cats are finished. Do you who your starting PG is ? Jaques Vaughn…Do you know who your starting 2 gaurd is? Good, I don’t know either. They suck man stop throwing rocks at the throw you peasant the Lakers are top dog right now man, we went under, we rebuilt and now we’re back. Hollar back, hater and brush that dirt of your shoulders, somebody school this cat.

  46. Ian says:

did i say we are winning our talkin out my ass like u r??
    NO

so dont give me the ohh hes a spurs fan shit everytime i post

im out ima go check my facebook like grownups like u do

  47. doug says:

oh you played football Jayo? That explains alot, you talk about the dumbest athletes in the world, how stupid do you have to be to go out and bash your head against another player, you guys commenting on basketball is a joke. Get in on a football blog, you bonehead, you lost the little bit of you have IQ trying to Jacknife a quarterback. I played ball, I’m talking to basketball intellects and cats that played the game at an organized level.

  48. JBFC says:

Just two years ago, I began documenting the institutional bias against LeBron that exists within this publication’s annals of power. If it continues, I will publish an explosive expose on the subject and force those perpetuating this bias to explain themselves.

  49. doug says:

ian?face book?you sound like societies finest,I’m sure your on facebook talking to grown-up, sounds like a breeding ground for,’to catch a predator guest appearances’Chris Hansens going to catch you eventually Ian stop while your ahead theres a better way to handle supporting a Spurs franchise in there demise.

  50. doug says:

JBFC? your taking that way too serious,”publish an explosive expose on the subject of the LeBron James bias”LOL.Your hilarious why don’t you do an expose on the John F.Kennedy assassination while your at it?LOL.You need to get out the house more man.

  51. Three Stacks says:

Lakers have as good a chance to win the chip this year as any other team. How can any person look at the Lakers and say they haven’t looked impressive?

People like to say Boston pushed around LA in the Finals, but if the first round version of the Celtics played the first round version of the Lakers, Lakers would’ve won in 5 games. It’s not like the Lakers played only soft teams on the way to the Finals, either. Two teams got to the Finals, blank slate, and one team outplayed the other.

  52. Three Stacks says:

@ doug, please stop yelling at your computer.

  53. doug says:

Three Stacks you feel me.These cats are on that hater stuff. The Celts got taken to the limit every series. That’s a differenst series with a healthy Laker Squad not one that fakes injuries for media hype, Paul Pierce your so fugazi, I lived in Inglewood aka”The Jingle” and cats in your own hood don’t even respect you because your so fake.

  54. doug says:

i’m not yelling three stacks i’m real calm just fending off laker haters. Take it easy boss.

  55. Three Stacks says:

    @ doug

We still lost, though. Real talk.

We gotta take the lumps as the losing fans. I understand your passion as a fan, but automatically assuming the Lakers are gonna win this year isn’t really doing our team any favors. Support them regardless, I say.

  56. control says:

    Here’s the bottomline guys:

    Celts won, Lakers didn’t.

Not much has changed since then, with either team, so though I think the Lakers would win right now, the nod has to goto the Celts. Anyone saying Bynum is the second coming of Shaq is tuggin their junk a bit too hard. Kid might be aight, but that’s only might.

Lakers and Celts both might not even make the finals this year, there are some pretty damn good teams in both the East and West.

  57. doug says:

not assuming anything just saying are chances are real good but these cats gotta still respect there opponents I’m not one of those fans that want my team to win when we aren’t respecting our opponents and giving the effort to show that. I think you misunderstood me man.

  58. doug says:

Thanks for letting us know that Control”Celts won. Lakers lost.” That was so insightful and profound.LOL.Come on man. BTW no one is saying Bynum is the 2nd coming of fat shaq, shaq aint even the second coming of himself. I’m just saying kendrick perkins wouldn’t have bodied Bynum like that. We have a defensive presence down low with that cat, and you as well as everybody knows we can score at will. Please see league leaders in blocks, Bynum is top 5. It’s a different story you guys, when we’re fully loaded, but i know we still have to go out there and win our games.8-1….i think we’re doing that so far and we’ve played legit teams including the Rockets and Hornets.

  59. control says:

    doug

You might not have mentioned Bynum being the 2nd coming, but there have been several talking crazy about him. Shit like he’s the top center in the league now (based off 1/2 season).

There are also a lot of Lakers fans talking like THEY won the championship, or had it stolen from them. That the Lakeshow is the top dog…which they ain’t until they knock off the Celts.

  60. doug says:

yeah i feel you control, those cats are idiots saying that it sounds like something that cat from NBA TV, Rick Kamala would say, that dude makes so many ignorant statements he put Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol in the Hall of Fame already along with Brandon Roy.The guys literally said that. He’s an idiot I’m all about giving players time before I crown them you gotta show me a body of work, not just one season. I feel you we have to prove we can beat the Celts before we can claim that, I’m with you on that. I’m not into the hype.

  61. Three Stacks says:

@ control, who exactly are you talking to that thinks Bynum is the top center in the League?

Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s good, I think he has a chance to be an All-Star soon. And NO DOUBT he’s making a difference on our squad.

But I don’t know ANY Laker fan that knows his shit that thinks Bynum is the answer to everything. Yes, it’s the first thing we all point to when citing a difference between this year and last, but that doesn’t mean people think he’s the Messiah or anything.

Maybe you’ve got a bias against Laker fans that makes you think we’re talking out of our asses by blowing up Bynum, but that’s more media than real fan talk. I’d appreciate if you’d try to notice the difference.

  62. Three Stacks says:

As an aside, I readily admit there are a LOT of Laker fans who don’t know shit about basketball. Which makes me sad. So I can understand where people like Control are coming from.

  63. Ian says:

    doug
    the facebook thing was sarcastic
find me a post were i said the spurs are gonna win and the lakers arent
im doin what u r doing supportin my team
the diff is u wanna post shit when i write about the spurs
even u admited the bynum talk is way outtaline

and prob the first and last time ill agree with u
on the fantasy basketball dude from nba tv
hes such a tool i like watchin his shows to hear the crap he comes out with

  64. VINNY says:

@3stacks-thank you for saying that!to many bandwagoner’s!! and doug before you go off- you are definitly not a bandwagoner- but maybe a little to pro-biased. not the worst thing in the world to really believe in your fav. player and team- just allow other people their opinion’s -like the way threestacks does!

  65. JCARR says:

Yes they will win!!! By far the deepest and most talented team in the NBA. I rather see the suns win a -chip but lakers have too many weapons on offense. And their defense is pretty legitimate.

  66. Jeffco says:

as much as i would love to see lebron back in the finals
i just dont think his time is now

    i love the lakers
so the only thing im looking forward to is a celtics lakers rematch

with my lakers taking it all at home!

    i cant wait til christmas
rematch with the celts will be the best gift ever

  67. doug says:

ian that cat is an idiot we agree on this, Rick Kamala is a moron.

  68. laballer says:

damn i really wanted to say something..but after 67 posts i think its all been said..lakers are taking it baby and ill be at the finals lovin it..see u at the parade!

  69. Nora says:

Lakers have yet to prove they can beat the C’s in the finals. Based on what we saw last year Bynum is not going to make much of a difference. Everybody though Lakers would win it last year and the C’s won. Don’t see anything changing this year.

  70. Three Stacks says:

    Nora is a hater.

  71. Timmy D says:

They wont win b/c of Pau, he is to soft and big games like he had last night never happen for him when it really matters and teams with more intense post guys will always take advantage of him. (ie Boston, Detroit, Denver?)
