The NBA’s safe-haven law
Antoine Walker (photo. adidas)You knew it wasn’t gonna last long. Yesterday, the Nebraska state Senate overwhelmingly voted to change it’s controversial “safe-haven” law, which had allowed parents to anonymously leave a child with local authorities (hospitals, police, etc.) without facing abandonment charges.
Originally intended to protect infants (better to have parents leave a baby at a hospital than trying to kill it and cover it up), the law proved flawed when people were coming in from other states and dropping off high schoolers. Inevitably, the Senate had to implement a 30-day age limit.
What does this have to do with the NBA? Think about guys like Stephon Marbury, Jamaal Tinsley, Antoine Walker and you see where I’m going.
If you could unload one player from your team with no negative salary-cap repercussions, who would it be?

Luol Deng. I hate to admit it but so far it looks like Ben Gordon should’ve been the one signed to the big deal. Deng has been a major disappointment.

Up until this season I would have said Kevin Ollie. Now I have to go with Willie Green and/or Donyell.

Austin Burton says:
Obviously Tinsley for the Pacers. After that, it’s tough. I wouldn’t mind dumping Rasho and letting Foster and Hibbert handle the center position, but I have to admit Rasho gets buckets sometimes, even if he does run like someone who’s holding it in. And Troy Murphy is overpaid, but he’s not terrible and is the team’s best PF.

I don’t even like the Knicks and even I wish they could waive Jerome James and Malik Rose’s contracts with no salary cap implications. Especially Jerome “chicken change” James. Steph actually has the best contract in the league for any team, what team wouldn’t want to have a $21,937,500 expiring contract.

Almost every team has a guy like they would love to just get rid of like that. But didnt the League just do that a few years ago? When Finley became a free agent?
If they’re going to allow it, then it should be something that reoccurs every 5 years of so.

Don’t you remember when this actually happened. The knicks gave up allen houston, the mavs got rid of finley. The salary cap amnesty rule was the biggest joke ever. Just like the stupid parents who aren’t ready to raise a kid the stupid franchises are stuck with their overpaid under perfoming busts until they turn 18.

I’d cut either Luke Walton or the Space Cadet…and then try to sign them back for around the league minimum. Lakers have 9 guys who could start for a lot of teams in the league and 3 additionals in Powell, Mihm, and Walton who would be key subs!!! Lakeshow in 09!!!
