The NBA’s safe-haven law

Antoine WalkerAntoine Walker (photo. adidas)

You knew it wasn’t gonna last long. Yesterday, the Nebraska state Senate overwhelmingly voted to change it’s controversial “safe-haven” law, which had allowed parents to anonymously leave a child with local authorities (hospitals, police, etc.) without facing abandonment charges.

Originally intended to protect infants (better to have parents leave a baby at a hospital than trying to kill it and cover it up), the law proved flawed when people were coming in from other states and dropping off high schoolers. Inevitably, the Senate had to implement a 30-day age limit.

What does this have to do with the NBA? Think about guys like Stephon Marbury, Jamaal Tinsley, Antoine Walker and you see where I’m going.

If you could unload one player from your team with no negative salary-cap repercussions, who would it be?

I thought you were going to bring up Shawn Kemp and all of his kids.

  3. Spliff 2 My Lou says:

Luol Deng. I hate to admit it but so far it looks like Ben Gordon should’ve been the one signed to the big deal. Deng has been a major disappointment.

  4. Dime Magazine says:

Up until this season I would have said Kevin Ollie. Now I have to go with Willie Green and/or Donyell.

  8. Smitty313 says:

  9. wanabballer says:

    I agree rael lafrentz….!!

  10. control says:

Raps already got rid of TJ Ford. Even got a serviceable center out of the deal.

  11. Brown says:

    Toronto - Joey Graham
    Golden State - Al Harrington

  12. VINNY says:

eddy curry-kill 2 birds with 1 stone- just think of the money they save from the buffet table

  13. justice says:

    Cavs-Ben Wallace
Knicks-Jared Jeffries,Jerome James,Malik Rose,Isiah Thomas, and anyone we pay that hasn’t been on the team in 3 years i heard charles smith and larry johnson were still getting checks

  14. Ian says:

  15. Ian says:

    justice
i would take malik on the spurs

  16. Sam I Am says:

I would go with Sebastian Telfair

  17. Ha Ha says:

Can YOUNGFED be taken off Dime and left on the doorsteps of MSN.Sports ??

  18. Austin Burton says:

Obviously Tinsley for the Pacers. After that, it’s tough. I wouldn’t mind dumping Rasho and letting Foster and Hibbert handle the center position, but I have to admit Rasho gets buckets sometimes, even if he does run like someone who’s holding it in. And Troy Murphy is overpaid, but he’s not terrible and is the team’s best PF.

  19. Sam I Am says:

that’s crazy about the leaving a baby thing tho

  20. $filmoney$ says:

I don’t even like the Knicks and even I wish they could waive Jerome James and Malik Rose’s contracts with no salary cap implications. Especially Jerome “chicken change” James. Steph actually has the best contract in the league for any team, what team wouldn’t want to have a $21,937,500 expiring contract.

  21. George W Kush Sr says:

Almost every team has a guy like they would love to just get rid of like that. But didnt the League just do that a few years ago? When Finley became a free agent?

If they’re going to allow it, then it should be something that reoccurs every 5 years of so.

  22. Jah says:

    Miami - Marcus Banks

  23. justice says:

    @ian

I know ur a spurs fan so im not sure if u have seen malik play any in the last 5 or so years…U don’t want that guy be thankful for matt bonner

  24. Patrick says:

Don’t you remember when this actually happened. The knicks gave up allen houston, the mavs got rid of finley. The salary cap amnesty rule was the biggest joke ever. Just like the stupid parents who aren’t ready to raise a kid the stupid franchises are stuck with their overpaid under perfoming busts until they turn 18.

  25. dapro says:

Spliff you from the Chi brotha?

Can I pick more than 1?

    Drew Gooden
    Larry Hughes

  26. Mamba says:

Danny G up in Miltown, without a doubt,

  27. Blue says:

    Miami…Mark ‘1 rebound 15 shots in 10 minutes’ Blount!!!

    Fuck that guy!!

  28. jl90 says:

blue, i totally agree. blount also takes way too many threes and plays like he wants his stats

  29. Ian says:

    justice lol
actually i havent seen a knick play in 5 years u r right
but i really missed malik when he was traded for muhammed

  30. isotope says:

Houston. Chuck Hayes. And they need a real backup center. Chuck ain’t it!

  31. Austin Burton says:

@isotope — The Rockets announcers love “Chuck-Wagon.” Is the team gonna re-sign Mutombo or what?

  32. Jeffrey says:

    Rafer Alston

  33. Diego says:

I smugly couldn’t think of anyone for the Hawks, but then I remembered…SPEEDY!! Yes, freakin Speedy Claxton is still (and will be I think for at least 1 more year) making pretty good size bucks from the Hawks! He’s played a total of about 15 games in 3 seasons. These days, he is more like “Gimpy.”

  34. noone'stheman says:

@Austin Burton -after they are under luxury tax area
deke will probably be signed in Jan. I miss the finger

luther head - a standing turnover machine and can’t dribble

chuck hayes - great defensive player but no jumper and now can’t even make layups

  35. BxBaller says:

    LOL @ Blue.
I would say Malik Rose, “Chicken Change” James, or that bum Gallinari. So that we can free up a spot for Ewing Jr.

  36. smity far away says:

    john paxson

  37. XZoom says:

    Lakers- Luke Walton

  38. coby who? says:

I’d cut either Luke Walton or the Space Cadet…and then try to sign them back for around the league minimum. Lakers have 9 guys who could start for a lot of teams in the league and 3 additionals in Powell, Mihm, and Walton who would be key subs!!! Lakeshow in 09!!!
