This Won’t End Well

Zach Randolph

After the Clippers added Zach Randolph the other day, we were sure there was another deal in the works - how else to explain L.A. adding another prime-time big to an already crowded front court still figuring out how to function with two centers?

This morning the Clips are saying they’re not looking to deal one of their three big guys. From the L.A. Times:

When the Clippers traded for the 6-9 power forward Randolph in a four-player deal with the Knicks on Friday, it was assumed in some quarters that another domino would then fall, perhaps along the lines of Kaman going to Charlotte or Chicago.

But Clippers Coach Mike Dunleavy, also the team’s general manager, said that was it for now in terms of deal-making. And word has gone out around the league that the Clippers are going to give this quixotic trial a shot.

Camby was willing to go along with the program. He could have said he didn’t come to the Clippers to accept diminished minutes, but that’s not his style.

“I’ll be the team player,” Camby said. “You know, I just want to win. If he comes in and starts, I don’t mind coming off the bench.

Camby can say all the right things to reporter about being cool with coming off the bench, but we all know that’s not how it’s going to go down.

How can Mike Dunleavy keep all three - Camby, Kaman and Zach - happy? Can it even be done or does this a disaster waiting to happen? We’re skeptical at best…

That’s way too much money at the 4 and 5 spots.

  2. hadoken says:

too much money or not, having zach down there has got to be better than having both fugazi and cat.

  3. banga says:

I don’t think this is going to work out… They’re all used to being starters in the L..

For them to become bench players in this stage of their career doesn’t seem like it will work.. There is no way he will be happy coming off the bench on a losing team..

Trade Camby to San Antonio who have always looked for a legit centre to play alongside TD ever since David Robinson retired..

  4. Dime Magazine says:

it’s not just who is going to be coming off the bench, it’s also about shots, boards, blocks, minutes, etc. And how do they play together? Baron and Al Thornton want/need to play at one speed while the other three play at a very different speed.

  5. loot says:

to sa? cool gives us gino and its done.

best deal would involve either jrich or carter.

  6. A$$Cube aka Fueled Clipp says:

Why not? Zach and Kaman are gonna be one of the best inside combo in the League. Camby is getting older and can really use 5-10 less mpg to get some rest and extend his career. I think he’d be a great energy guy coming of the bench. Maybe the best in the entire NBA. If he can put up 5-6 ppg 9-10 rpg 2-3 bpg in 25 mpg behind Z-Bo and K-Man, the Clipps are gonna be good.

I think everybody’s kinda jalous or something that the Clipps just landed two inside forces -a former DPY and a 20-10 guy- for next to nothing: Cat, Tim Thomas and a 2nd rounder swap.

THIS is GREAT management. And if it does NOT pan out, well, I’m sure some contender would be glad to ship an expiring or two and a couple picks to pry one of the Clipps big away from L.A.

AND Mardy Collins provides them with another body behind the always injured Baron.

I really like this deal. I’m gonna enjoy rooting for the Clipps for the next couple years till my Knicks spend their money on some big-time FA.

i’d trade kaman away for a young serviceable center who can rebound and block shots. let zach take care of scoring, while camby does the rest.

    c camby
    pf zbo
    sf al
    sg gordon
    pg boom

    6th man buckets

  8. Timmy D says:

Id trade Camby and get some value out of him if you can if you really cant get anything then try to get some picks or young guys for Kaman

  9. Scott says:

If Odom could do it, why would Camby have a problem doing it? All 3 have lost A LOT in their careers, and at this stage more so for Camby, the chance of getting a ring is almost nill unless he helps this squad.

Considering Zach bought completely into D’Antoni’s system, he seems to have matured, Kaman is the wild card, as he’s the youngest I believe.

I’m a little surprised at how everyone is reacting to this on the Clipps side. They rid themselves of a horrible influence in Tim Thomas, I mean with Thornton and Gordon, did they really want Thomas around these youngins, influencing them on how not to act in the L. Cat was solid, but his time seemed up with the drafting of Gordon and the signing of Ricky D.

Personally, I think the trio could be dominate with some time and patience. This will definitely be a team to watch in the second half of the season, if not sooner. They just need to get their act together.

  10. Jah says:

I’m just not a believer in Baron Davis as the starting PG of a franchise. He’s very talented, but there’s just something about him that says “I can’t get my team over the top.” I hope he proves me wrong though.

More minutes at the wing positions for the last two top draft picks to develop .

Zach has such a bad reputation as a chemistry buster, but he puts up big numbers so he gets another shot here. Perhaps he can be the consistent scoring/rebounding presence that the Clips need. The question here becomes defense…and other than Camby and Kaman, who else is there playing any?

All in all now, the Clippers are DEFINITELY a more talented team. The only question is whether or not Coach/GM Dunleavy can get them to gel together. Here’s hoping…

    PG - Baron Davis
    SG - Eric Gordon
    SF - Al Thorton
    PF - Zach Randolph
    C - Marcus Camby

  11. MBE18 says:

The Knicks should have tried to get Camby back in return.

  12. kobeef says:

The real issue is that there are other teams that need a starting 4 or 5 and the Clips have a surplus of talent.

The most glaring hole for LA is at SG or SF. They need an all star at one of those positions and with either Kaman or Camby they could get that.

I don’t see a lot of teams having interst in Kaman but Camby would be a hot commodity if he is available. Here’s two trades I could see happening:

    Rip Hamilton for Camby
    - Rip is not fitting in well with Iverson. Detroit has one season to go with Iverson and Rasheed and a front line of Rasheed and Camby would be championship quality.

    Mike Beasley for Camby
    - Mike is not working out well in Miami and it not a Pat Riley type player. Also, Miami needs a real 5 in a bad way.

  13. gift of gab says:

this would be the same problem if brand never left and camby still got traded to l.a. Zbo is like a poorman’s EB. camby should take a backseat like odom does next door. post 9 sums that up. good luck clips…

  14. barons beard says:

@ kobeef - No way Miami trades away Beasley, the kid is going to be a beast. More likely they look to move Matrix than Bease

I don’t see the problem with what the Clips have got, they have a pretty damn good rotation at the 4 & 5 spots

If it does become an issue, then they have interior players other teams would trade for, so could bring in help at other positions

  15. Jeffrey says:

I like it. Make it work

  16. snoop_robb says:

yeah why not? start 2 centers, a fat-ass PF and 2 guards in e.Gordon & Boom… that is the Booooooomtastic recipe for success!!! hahha

  17. Bron42 AkA Your Moms Best Friend says:

beasly for camby? your kidding right? this deal could work since camby is a defensive guy and doesn’t need shots anyway..he can come off the bench and just be a leader to the second string like Zo did on miami..lol miami trade beasly the #2 pic for 90 year old camby…hilarious

  18. Dave says:

The team isn’t good enough to make it work.

They won’t win enough games. They won’t play enough defense. Their wings aren’t contributing enough.

It simply won’t work. They have to make another trade, a follow up trade, in order to maximize their assets.

Even that won’t work though because the Zach trade has cornered them in …. and you don’t want to be stuck in the corner when you’re a 30 win squad without enough cap space.

  19. added says:

send kaman to the bulls for one of their expendable back court players

  20. Buffalo Brave says:

    The Clipps are 2-11

They could resurrect Jordan and Magic and it wouldn’t make a difference.

    FAIL

  21. isotope says:

Why would they need to ressurect people who arent dead?

  22. AY says:

fugazi, that’s so wrong. I wonder how does doom-fizzle feel about his fastbreaks when he sees kamen and randolph 50 feet behind him, camby’s on the bench and he’s got ricky buckets ready to drop 3s with 2 guys on top of him. How about a great timeout?

  23. karizmatic says:

Camby doesn’t care about playing for the Clippers…he really doesn’t want to play…so it’s nothing for him not to start, he’s still brooding about not being on Denver anymore. but Kaman and Randolph in the same frontcourt I don’t think that’s going to work.
