Darren Collison (photo. UCLA)We just watched UCLA turn a close game against Southern Illinois in the first half into a legitimate blowout thanks to strong performances from Alfred Aboya and Darren Collison.
If DC can continue to knock down three’s like he did tonight (3-3 3FG), he’ll improve his draft stock. Aboya went for 22 points and 9 boards, outmuscling SIU’s frontline. He wasn’t able to do so last night against Michigan’s DeShawn Sims, who also burned him on a backdoor cut to seal the monster upset win.
Next up is the championship game of the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer between the Blue Devils and the Wolverines. We’ll be watching Michigan’s freshman guard Stu Douglass closely, who stole the show from the Bruins’ guards last night. Douglass went for 10 points (4-5 FG) and 5 dimes, but he was super clutch down the stretch.
Tonight against Nolan Smith/Greg Paulus, he should be able to operate just as effectively.
And perhaps the biggest storyline with this game is the coaching of John Beilein. Earlier today at the Dime office, somebody said that Beilein is the fourth best coach in the country. He undoubtedly outcoached Ben Howland, flummoxing UCLA with a 1-3-1 zone. Can he prove that he’s among the best coaches in the country with a win tonight against Coach K?
