How does Digital Durant fit on your team? All you’ve got to do is play video games. No, seriously.
Rockets’ GM Daryl Morey, who is widely considered one of the most progressive NBA GM’s, uses NBA Live ‘09 as another tool to evaluate how players would work wearing a Rockets’ uni.
Because the new breed of hoop video games update with real-life scouting information, Morey only needs to take another player, plug him into the Rockets’ system, and see how his game interacts with Yao’s, T-Mac’s, Ron Artest’s, and Rick Adelman’s approach.
No doubt he did this last year when thinking about adding Artest.
“On the game, you can see how adding Artest can change the dynamic of your team. You can program it to run offensive sets with Artest and any combination of your players.”
Morey believes that this type of “scouting” will continue to have a place in the game.
“Simulation is great and will have a bigger and bigger place in the process,” Morey said. “But at the end of the day you can’t simulate a player being out too late the night before or his body language on the bench or how he interacts with teammates. Some things you have to do in person.”
It’s a good thing that this isn’t the only scouting tool - because otherwise those guys who get buckets in the video game, and the video game only, like Brent Barry, Mike Finley, and J.J. Barea would be getting max deals.

Wow! does he know nba live 09′ sucks. How about 2k9???
Anyway its an interesting approach to modern day scouting. Auerbach must be turning in his grave with disgust though.

I have a question about NBA live 09. How come during the season when you go to league leaders there are so many players averaging more than 30 points per game. I believe on my dynasty their are 11 players averaging more than 30 points per game. The game feels so unreal because of this and I only have it on 10 minute simulation quarters. Anybody know how to fix this?

@Matt
SIMPLE: Yeah i know how to fix it. You go to Gamestop and you trade it in for NBA 2k9.

I think this is a stupi approach to scouting. I can take Smush Parker, Ricky Davis, Donyell Marshall, Kevin Love, and Eddy Curry in the gam and win a ring.

The 2K series is only now getting its due. It was underrated on the Dreamcast and when it went multi-platform, that was it for EA. EA had to get exclusive rights in other sports and once tried to get exclusive NBA rights to try and stay afloat.

live has some nice ideas, but it’s based upon their subjective stats — the daily updated scouting mechanism is still based on silly things, like zaza pachulia being faster than ronnie brewer, and things like that . . .

I have both games, i play 2k, i hardly ever touch nba live. but that’s not to say that 2k is flawless either — why does jason kidd have a better three point rating than deron williams?
using them for scouting is like playing prince of persia, and expecting to be someone who can help out understand foreign policy with iran.

Dime, please tell him to use 2k9 as a scouting tool instead.
And because he’s with the Rockets, tell him that TMac sucks and is the sorriest excuse for a superstar ever. Thanks.

Im sure 2k does have some problems, but Live’s problems are alot bigger. Bynum rated 61 overall,Dwight Howard 83 when you have guys like Oden at 79. Ten or more players averaging more than 30 points per game through out the season. Not to mention no player on the game averages more than 9 rebounds on the whole year. Having the game on superstar mode is still way to easy, being able to shoot 70 percent from the field almost every game. Its just rediculous, I cant wait to trade it in for 2k9.

yup @ matt
2k >>> live, for the nth year in a row.
some things are good in both franchises though. having the ability to impliment actual ball handling moves with the right stick > whatever the eff 2k is doing with the right stick right now. (shot stick?) i’m also a fan of the lay-up/dunk button being distinct from the shoot button. it’s not complicated . . . people don’t walk up to a urinal when they want to take a shit. having distinct shoot/dunk buttons is as complicated as knowing the difference between #1 and #2. we’ve all (apparently) seemed to master that, so it shouldn’t be an issue.
2k is just more fun.

That was indeed awesome plays from D-rose. It shows how much of bright future he has ahead of him. And apparently he still doesnt need a jump shot.

I’d recommend this simulation game to NBA general managers. They won’t learn much but they’ll waste some time effectively!
