Andrew Bynum: The Lakers Can’t Rebound Without Me
When Trevor Ariza came into the game for Andrew Bynum with 5:31 left in the game last night, the Lakers led 107-100. From that point until Troy Murphy tipped in the game-winner, the Lakers were outrebounded 11-2. During that stretch, six of the Pacers’ boards came on the offensive end, and provided Indiana with the second-chance opportunities to close that gap.
“The second unit played well, got a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter,” said Bynum. “We were all taken out with six minutes to go in game. We didn’t get any rebounds [after that]. I don’t know what to say about that.”
Though Bynum might be justifiably pissed at Phil, he was in the game when Troy Murphy snuck to the glass for the game-winner. He was one of the guys who swarmed Rasho Nesterovic when he lost the handle.

How is he overrated?
If he wasn’t there, this bunch of thugs wouldn’t win anything.

Overrated??!?!?! Do you know what their record is?
Bynum isn’t an X-factor yet, he’s just a solid center.

They just got out-worked and played NO
defense,
The last play was lucky, but LA deserved to lose that game,
Agreed that they should have stuck with that second unit longer, Kobe did have a chance to ice it at the end but missed that leaner

LIke others said. Phil is a good coach, not a great coach. His substitutions are very suspect.

SayItAintSo says:
His substitutions are purposeful. Do you think the unit that finished this game and was dominated on the boards will feel extra guilty about this loss?
Phil is all about these mind games…he’ll take a loss early in the season like this simply to have an impact on his players so they’re ready for the more important road ahead. Dimensions and layers, the man is brilliant. Read his books.

I second Marcus’ suggestion for Wellner…
It’s unnecessary to make idiotic comments like that, but it says a lot more about who you are or are posing to be in a blog than the “thugs” you think you are making fun of…
Remember you are taking time to insult them while they live their life and don’t even know you…so weak…

@ Richard,
Thugs like who? Radmanovic, Farmar, Fisher, and Vujacic?
I’d be scared to death if I saw that crew walking down the street……

I hope he doesnt turn into a whiner.. but i like the attitude.. you would expect some of them not to care about losing that game since we are in such good shape so i like the fire..
The tip in was a fluke, we were standing around waiting for the game to be over.. Like someone up top said, we deserved to lose that game..

LakeShow84 says:
And i think Phil makes good subs.. and the timing on his timeouts is trust worthy as well..
Honestly i think Phil is top 3 coaches so people who say he is overrated always tend to throw the superstar factor into it but i always look at it like this..
Jordan, Pippen, Kobe and Shaq never won ANYTHING until Phil came along.. and some of those championship teams went to war and came out of it.. Nobody calls Popovich overrated and hes had Arguably the best Power Forward of all time and a hall of fame PG in his lap his whole coaching career..
And thats right i said it.. Tony Parker will be in the hall of fame eventually..

La deserved to lose, indiana’s not that bad of a team that you can take for granted and half ass it even though they almost accomplished it last night this should be a lesson learned, next time blow them out

Flip says:
He was one of the guys who swarmed Nesterovic when he lost the handle??? Then he was one of the guys who let Rasho make that pass that set up the winning bucket for the Pacers…
You can reverse that argument easily

Thugs do not play professional basketball people stop using these terms lightly…The people who screw up in professional sports are just that screw ups, they are only threats to themselves and their teams not society..ask the giants..Thugs are legit threats to society, maybe mike tyson, maybe lawrence phillips…

I just had this trouble last night in 2k9…lakers have mad trouble rebounding sometimes and it’s MAD frustrating to watch. GOT DANG SECOND OPPORTUNITIES!

Scott says:
Its hard to rank Sloan, Pop, Phil, they all have such different yet distinct styles. I think a guy like Nate McMillian will be in that convo in a few years. He’s been a borderline great coach wherever he’s gone. Remember that uprising he caused in Seattle when he got them playing like a playoff team. If he can stick with Portland, which I can’t see why he wouldn’t, I think he could be that 4th elite coach.

Like somebody said the game winner was just a fluke. It was nothing but pure luck IMO and yeah they deserve to lose after letting them get back in the game after they destroyed them with a 17-0 run to end the third.

the antoine says:
i think phil kills them sometimes with their substitutions.. the second unit got them that lead.. and the had four turnovers and phil takes them out for the first unit that had been getting out worked constantly throughout the game.. bad coaching.. bad playing.. bad game over all.. still on pace for 70 wins tho.. ill take 7 wins for every loss..

A-Slam says:
The Lakers are by no means thugs, just a bunch of pretty boys (I mean cmon Farmar and walton and vujacic look like the stereotypical preppy white dudes you’d see in the o.c.) In other words they’re soft as hell, that’s why Boston tore them a new asshole.
December 3rd, 2008 at 5:58 pm
Three Stacks says:
@ Ian
You say Pop won w/ different teams, but all of them played the same brand of basketball, with the team emphasis on defense and Duncan being the focal point offensively. Be honest, with players like Duncan, Manu, and Parker, the rest are just plug and play.
I think Pop is a great coach, though, regardless. If he’s not the next Olympic coach, something is very very wrong.
@ Kermit
Lakers are still the best rebounding team the League, statistically.
