Brandon Jennings’ Coach Steps Down
Brandon JenningsThough Brandon Jennings’ Lottomatica Roma team is 5-1 in Euroleague play – the best mark in generations for the club – their fiery head coach Jasmin Repesa has decided to step down from his post.
Repesa has a reputation for being one of the toughest coaches in Europe, and it’s well deserved. But “toughest coach” means something different over there than it does here. In addition to having a quick-trigger to throw players out of practice, Repesa also is exceedingly tough to play for because of the playing time that he doles out. He’ll play all fifteen guys on his roster, giving one guy 25 minutes one night and five the next.
Repesa cited domestic results in statements quoted by the club. Roma has struggled at home in the Italian League, losing four straight games, and currently sits in ninth place in the domestic standings.
Maybe this means that the Roma players will start to see a more regular rotation, and Jennings will be given a greater role in their system. As it stands right now, Jennings is projected to fall within the Top 10 by most 2009 Mock Drafts, even if he’s seen about 15 minutes per night. With more time, he could solidify himself in the top five.

Jennings sucks if he can’t make it there. That’s a tough league, though, so I give him props for even attempting it. He should’ve just went to St. Johns or something.

who cares, hes gonna be in the first round next year anyway. please stop talking about him unless he does something significant over there or until he gets back. last time i checked, going overseas and putting up bad numbers is not newsworthy. high school is over and if he is playing with the big boys and getting big checks we gotta treat and evaluate him like one.

Seriously, if Jennings does pan out and succeeed in the NBA, think about the level of exposure that international basketball will get in the US. High school prep stars will be going overseas a lot more often than going to college. Player salaries will rise over there, and more legit NBA players will jump ship to play in places like Greece a la Josh Childress. If that happens, the Players Association will have a HUGE bargaining chip to renegotiate the CBA, and the League will have to concede if they want to keep a high level of play.
Also, think about the effect it will have on college basketball. More great HS talent (who would usually decide to go straight to the League but can’t because of the age 19 and 1 year out of HS rule) will decide to go play overseas for money instead of in college for two semesters of education. The college basketball level of play will not be as high, and it will probably suffer as a result.
Brandon Jennings put himself in the position to be an industry changer, like Kevin Garnett was in regards to players going from HS to the NBA. The difference between the two is that the NBA can regulate what criterion need to be met in order to join the league. They don’t have that same power in regards to international basketball. If Jennings makes it to the NBA and succeeds, American basketball (college and NBA) will suffer, but international basketball wont. Garnett changed the NBA, but Jennings will change the entire world of basketball.

Jennings has struggled over there as the Coach uses everyone on the team. He doesn’t care if your daddy helps the team, or if your the #1 prospect in the world. He uses everyone. Jennings I believe has started a trend for High School Athletes with poor grades.
