Charles Barkley Arrested
The AP is reporting that early this morning Charles Barkley was arrested on suspicion of drinking and driving in Scottsdale, Arizona.
An officer with a law enforcement task force that targets drunken driving saw the former NBA star run a stop sign around 1:30 a.m., said Gilbert police Lt. Eric Shuhandler.
Barkley declined to submit to a breath test but was given a blood test. The results weren’t immediately available.
After Barkley was processed, he was cited and released. He left in a cab, Shuhandler said.
Shuhandler said there was nothing remarkable about the 45-year-old Barkley’s arrest and that it is customary to release people after they’ve been arrested on suspicion of DUI.
“There was nothing unusual about how he was taken into custody,” Shuhandler said. “He was treated exactly like we treat anybody else.”
Barkley was arrested in Scottsdale’s Old Town area, one of the trendiest spots in the Phoenix metro area.

I hate Barkley. He always considered himself a figure of moral superiority and was quickly condescending to any athlete that found himself of trouble (I can think of his reaction to Carmelo’s troubles and recently, to Plaxico’s). Although he sees himself as the Dahli Lama of the NBA, he should start realizing he’s just a drunk gambling illiterate fool. These qualities, combined with his ignorant confidence and dogmatism make him attractive to TV, not the obvious insight he babbles about on screen.

well, in the 90’s during rockets training camp in Austin he bought everyone’s drinks in this brew pub for the last two hours of the night – probably around 4K worth. Dude likes to drink. Get someone else to drive or hire someone….damn…
he even admits drinking during his TNT broadcasts

I like Barkley for what he is, not for what he pretends or wants to be. He has some good insights about the game, but being funny doesn’t mean you’re smart. Entertaining people can make alot of bad decisions, this is just one more.

Barkley gave blood. That’s worse.
Breathalyzer measures your blood alcohol level.
what do you think is a truer measure than the blood itself?

the advice to never blow into the breath test is bad advice. if you don’t blow, you’re penalized to the full extent in Connecticut. refusal to submit to a breath test is also an automatic license suspension in CT (30 days I think, might actually be 90 days). i suspect there are more states that have similar regulations.

Yup, as others said not blowing into the breathalyzer is automatic suspension. Plus your defense against them is much better than the blood test in that they could have missed up the calibration, or administered the test improperly. Blood test is cold hard evidence. Only advantage you have is the time it takes them to do the blood test you might have time to get below the legal limit.
BTW in AZ a dui means automatic jail time in tent city. (I wonder if they’ll make him wear the pink jump suit.) You also have to outfit your car for 6 months or so days with a breathalyzer.

Alex from AZ says:
I didn’t know celebs ever went to Dirty Pretty anymore (where he got busted in scottsdale)
The reason that you should turn down the breathalizer and opt for blood to be drawn is that they (the cops) can take the breathalizer on site and can instantly determine guilt, if you opt for blood to be drawn, you have to be driven in the squad car to the police station, have all the paper work filled out, mug shot taken before a licensed person can draw the blood, sometimes this all adds up to an additional 1.5 hours for your body to process the alcohol in your system.

Never got that, when athletes or celebs get DUIs, don’t they have enough money to get a limo to drive them around? That is just stupid, mostly after the AZ DUI Laws got more strict with automatic tent city time and a breath alayzer in the car.
Chuck likes to drink, nothing wrong with that, but damn, take a cab.

Every time I hear about a RICH guy catching a DUI I wonder why none of these guys have drivers?? I f I had that much money I wouldn’t drive anywhere. I’d have 1 guy on payroll who’s job is strictly to drive me around.
This doesn’t change my opinion of the guy. I’ll always have respect for him. I know some really good people who’ve caught a DUI.

alex is wrong. if you get your blood drawn, say, 2 hours later, the prosecutor will easily find an expert to estimate, based on scientific data, what your blood alcohol level was at the time of driving, based on that blood sample. thus it’s not the case that blood draws are always better than submitting to a breathalyzer test.

i dont know what your lawyers tell you, but every legal representative i’ve ever spoken with ALWAYS advises against blowing unless you’re absolutely positive you can pass w/ flying colors. YES you will get prosecuted for DUI but when you go to court, your lawyers chances of getting your case dropped to say a reckless driving are much greater bc you wont have any positive readings as evidence against you. i dont have any advice regarding blood tests other than try to avoid those as well.

DECEMBER 31–Following his arrest earlier today for drunk driving, Charles Barkley told Arizona cops that he ran a stop sign because he was in a hurry to pick up a girl who had “given him a ‘blow job’ one week earlier,” which the former NBA star described as “the best one he had ever had in his life.” According to a Gilbert Police Department report, a copy of which you’ll find here, police asked Barkley where he was going at the time of the 1:26 AM traffic stop in Scottsdale. “You want the truth? I was gonna drive around the corner and get a blow job,” answered Barkley, who is pictured in the below mug shot. A cooperative Barkley also joked with a civilian police employee that, “I’ll tattoo your name on my ass” if it would get him out of the DUI charge. Barkley, 45, was busted after failing field sobriety tests, and had blood drawn so investigators could establish his alcohol content. Barkley was cited for a misdemeanor charge and released at the scene, thus avoiding a trip to the Maricopa County jail.
