Suns Rise
Amare Stoudemire, Dime #14For their own sake, maybe the Suns hit rock-bottom when they got destroyed by the Mavs on national TV the other day, and it’s all looking up from here. Phoenix was an entirely different team last night against the Jazz, essentially the unit Steve Kerr was envisioning when he made the Shaq trade in the first place; able to dominate the paint and run at the same time. Amare put up 22 points and 20 boards in the win, Shaq added 15 and 10, and Leandro Barbosa, whose game is impacted the most depending on whether the Suns are running, scored 25. We would point out that Utah didn’t have Carlos Boozer, but Paul Millsap (20 pts, 12 rebs) has been playing out of his mind in Boozer’s absence, so it’s almost a wash … Play of the game: Shaq got an offensive board over four guys (Korver, Harpring, Memo and Kirilenko; it looked like a Duke game had broken out) and crammed on all of them, with AK-47 taking a forearm in the face in the process … As for the Mavs, they seem to have found their stride as well. The three-guard lineup with Jason Kidd, Jason Terry and J.J. Barea (the new “Three J’s”?) has been killing lately, including last night against the Hawks, helping Dallas pick up their ninth win in the last 10 games. Barea scored 22, doing a lot of his damage during a third-quarter run where the Mavs seemed to pull away before having to fight off a late ATL rally. From a pure scoring standpoint, Barea has been looking like Steve Nash from a couple years ago, never picking up his dribble until he absolutely has to and finding ways to finish over 7-footers despite not having Baron Davis hops or Deron Williams strength … D-Wade dropped 38 on the Thunder, treating their D like traffic cones and beasting guys like Chris Wilcox on the boards who should never get beasted by someone Wade’s size. We need to make a provision that when it comes to voting on postseason awards and All-Star selections, we can’t consider anything that was done against the Thunder. It’s like playing in an empty gym … After focusing on locking down Danny Granger on Friday, LeBron was able to get back to getting buckets, to the tune of 25 points in 27 minutes on the helpless Bobcats. It wasn’t all offense, though; ‘Bron had his standard-fare intimidation block (this time on Ray Felton) … When D.J. Augustin fakes a pass to set up a shot, does anyone fall for it? Seeing him and Mo Williams on the same court is like when Stromile Swift and Tyrus Thomas meet up … Speaking of Stro, he popped up and made an appearance in Nets/Sixers, via an alley-oop from Vince that Stro threw down like the good ol’ days … Devin Harris went for 27 points, eight assists and four steals in the win, while Vince (who NBA TV’s Kevin Loughery called “underrated”) almost had a triple-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds and eight dimes … Reggie Miller was among the celebs in the crowd for the Manny Pacquiao/Oscar De La Hoya fight in Vegas. Mike Tyson, Bernard Hopkins, Sugar Shane and Usher were also in the building, along with Keyshia Cole, who sang the Anthem. All three undercard fights were weak — the dude who lost the second fight, Sergio Medina, was especially a disgrace — and the main event was surprisingly one-sided. Oscar looked old and slow, and by the 2nd/3rd round it became clear there was no way he’d win the fight. Pacman just pounded him relentlessly, staggered him a few times, and in the words of Jim Lampley, was “disfiguring the beautiful face” of De La Hoya before The Golden Boy quit on his stool after the eighth round. Pacman was simply too fast and too strong, and Oscar should seriously consider calling it a career … We’re out like The Golden Boy …

I am saying how it is with the Suns. Do you see them going past the first round this year- IF they make the playoffs?
Kerr was good as a Yahoo Analyst but horrible as a GM. He’s gonna be praying for D’Antoni to come back soon.
And Nash would be a great fit for New York. Since the Suns are in a rebuilding phase, they might as well trade him for Nate Robinson.

Wooah… JJ compared Nash. Its too early for that even though JJ has been balling and definetely deserves to start.
Was the boxing match even worth watching better yet buying?!?!?!?!?!???? They just destroyed boxings comeback after last night. UFC has taken over.
The suns, spurs and dallas are all surpringly worse than last year, but its better for them to struggle now than later.
December 7th, 2008 at 8:56 am

JCARR, the Spurs are not worse than last year. They are ‘balling’ pretty damn hard considering they started off gimpy.

btw… i think it is ok for the Mavs,Suns,Spurs,Pistons to get their bruises this early in the season. that means they still have alot more time tom fix their gameplan… for the Cavs… it goes the other way… they’re off to a big start and look ayt.. but they have to keep they game right as the real playoff caliber teams are yet to come…

yeah they are in HD but it depends if they send the roadcast out. it is odd though cause some nights they are hd and others they are not. from what i understand it depends on who is actually broadcasting the games, not every team has hd set up, and last night the warriors where broadcasting so i guess they didnt bring any HD equipment with them.
what pissews me off (and they did it to me again last night), spurs at home and they have the OTHER TEAMS COMMENTATORS calling the game!!!!
spurs can look VERY GOOD (ie last night) when they play a team with little on the inside, when they are up against a team with good inside players they have issues. (ie rockets). they need someone better then bonner rebounding, better then oberto and his crappy tapouts, better then thomas and his age (he is not bad just a step or 5 slower) better hten duncan, OH WAIT what they hell was i thinking, there has never been anyone better then duncan! i think they have the outside game figured out. i want to see mahinmi in there!

I’m sure no one was paying attention with the fight going on, but the Kings were bad — like Thunder level bad — against the Nuggets. I just had the game on in the background but ended up watching the last ten minutes because I couldn’t believe a team could be that bad. Guys on the Kings bench actually left the floor before the buzzer, they were so disgusted.
The Kings announcers weren’t even paying attention to calling the game most of the second half, it was so pointless.
And check the highlights for a Dahntay Jones block against Brad Miller — absolutely sick, Jones’ leap made Kobe look like Scalabrine in comparison. That was the most excited the announcers got…they were raving over Dahntay all game, no Kings players to rave over anyway.
December 7th, 2008 at 11:43 am
Richard Wellner says:
Given how horrible the Kings are, how DARE Dime compare VC to Martin?
Martin is a crappy player on any decent team. He is one of those ‘do good on a crap team’ players.
Even though I chose Martin in the earlier post, I take that back. He sucks, the Kings suck, they should just rebuild.

Celts Fan says:
Oscar is wealthy as hell and owns Golden Boy Promotions (why Shane and Hopkins were there) and rakes in the $$$. Dude don’t need to get popped in the grill to get paid and is too slow to avoid it. Hang ‘em up and focus on the hype game. No shame in losing to the best in the world right now or in anything he’s done in his career. Call it a day before you’re Evander slow…
and I know this is a few days late, but after seeing Brandon Roy in person for the first time on Friday and seeing how he basically got shut down (for him) by the Celtics, I gotta give it up. Joe Johnson is definitely better right now. Roy is my favorite non-Celtic in the league and does just about everything (love versatility) but Joe does too and seems to get his a little easier at this point. When all’s said and done, I think Roy becomes a top 10 player, but not yet (and if both of these guys aren’t on the 2012 Olympic team, it’s a travesty.)

Celts Fan says:
@Richard WEllner (change it to Dick Wellner and you get a great porn name! anyway…) I think Kevin Martin’s a really nice player, he just shouldn’t be the best player on a team. If he’s your #2 or #3, you’re in great shape, when he’s your #1, you’re going to the lottery again. Nothing wrong w/ that, he’s just miscast as THE guy, when he shouldn’t be.

You’re right, CeltsFan. That is more or less what I was shooting for.

I watched the game on the CW (crazy, huh?) here in cap-city Austin, TX and we had Bill and Sean calling the game, very amusing last night btw.

bruce, you are missing the point, we are not talking bringing in mahinmi as an impact player, just someone who can give some athleticism, and some youth. ian was not out of the d league, he was sent down due to roster spots more then anything. granted his 1st season he needed to get some time in, but damn the kid was only 18 or 19 at that time. he just turned 22, most college kids come into the league around 22-23 yrs old.
December 7th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
baron von faulk says:
They had Mahinmi in the dL because he was rotting on the bench in France playing like 6 mins/gm. This way he could learn the Spurs’ system here in Austin and they could more closely monitor his development.
He could very likely end up being the best player to ever have played dL ball (moreso than the Matt Carroll suggestion or Devin Brown i.e.). Still very raw, though…
His #’s last year were reeediculous and he led the Toros to the Finals which is great experience, if he can do even close to half that in the real L he will make the impact necessary to (possibly) put Spurs over the top. If he didn’t get injured in preseason he would already be contributing.
He’ll do better defensively than Oberto or Kurt Thomas could anyway. He’ll grab quite a few boards, get a couple of blocks, and even posterize a few bigs with his athletic ability.
He is the ace up Pop’s sleeve for the 2nd half of the season, just watch. The Spurs are gonna be sneakin’ up on folks, just BAU!
