Don’t Know How to Stop
Kevin Garnett, Dime #30Unless you’re a Boston (or Cleveland) fan right now, it’s hard not to pull for an underdog to come in and snap a long win streak by one of the League’s big dogs. For about 25 minutes last night it seemed Chris Paul and the Hornets would be the ones to bring down the Celtics, as they held a slim halftime lead on the same night James Posey received his ’08 title ring. (Between this one and the ’06 Miami ring that’s about the size of an apple, Posey’s holding more diamonds than a high-stakes poker tournament.) The champs responded like champs in the second half, though, putting together a 17-4 run in the third and exposing the absence of Tyson Chandler (neck) while extending the streak to 14 W’s and counting … CP was a beast with 20 points, 14 dimes and three steals, but with that white elbow sleeve he looked like somebody had thrown David West into the wash cycle … With all the hate Kevin Garnett has received post-championship, no one’s talking about Kendrick Perkins. Intensity is one thing, but he’s been overly snarling and bitter for no reason, leading the NBA in techs in the process. But if Perk takes a few more crownings like the one Hilton Armstrong gave him yesterday, maybe he’ll calm down … Meanwhile, the Sixers weren’t as much of a threat to stop the Cavs’ streak. LeBron put up 28 points, seven boards, seven dimes and three blocks — giving Andre Iguodala the contractually-obligated B.A. Baracus Intimidation Special — as Cleveland won #11 in a row … Oh yeah, and the Lakers got some get-back on the Kings, taking care of business at home behind Kobe‘s 32 points against a spirited Sacto squad. If nothing else, clearly we were premature in toe-tagging the Kings/Lakers rivalry … In his Phoenix debut, J-Rich looked a lot like Joe Johnson back when J.J. he was catching ‘oops and sticking threes running with Steve Nash. J-Rich scored 21 against Orlando and seamlessly transitioned into the Suns’ system, giving them some of that explosiveness back that they lost with the Shawn Marion trade. The reverse lob finish Richardson caught from Leandro Barbosa where he was almost looking down into the rim was filthy … In a nip/tuck game down the stretch, Hedo gave Orlando a one-point lead with seven seconds left on a tough fadeaway just inside the arc, but then the beleaguered Terry Porter actually drew up a great play for the game-winner: Grant Hill made the inbounds pass from midcourt up top to Amare, then got a back-pick from Steve Nash that allowed him to get open along the baseline behind Orlando’s defense. Amare’s pass was on-point and Hill converted the reverse layup … Why wasn’t Dwight Howard there to send Grant’s shot to the cotton candy man, you ask? He left in the third quarter with a knee injury that he says is mild, but scary nonetheless for the Magic, since it means significant playing time for Marcin Gortat if Dwight misses time. Gortat isn’t good, but he does crack our Top-10 list of NBA players we’d never, ever want to run across in a dark alley …
Baron Davis (photo. Tim Tadder)Blazers/Clippers was another thriller, going to double-OT as Baron Davis (27 pts) and Brandon Roy (38 pts, 9 asts) went shot-for-shot and Zach Randolph torched his old team for 38 and 11 boards. The Clips pulled away at the end, but Portland only has itself to blame. Steve Blake could have iced it multiple times late in the fourth, but he had a Nick Anderson moment, going 1-for-5 at the line during the final 30 seconds when he’s usually as cash as anyone … Whatever the Raptors did to Vince Carter in Jersey, Sam Mitchell wishes they would have done it in Toronto. When VC ripped their hearts out in their own building last month, it started a stretch where the Raps went 3-7 and Mitchell lost his job. Last night, Jay Triano‘s crew harassed Vince (3 pts) into an 0-for-13 showing. At some point, Raptors fans will start judging their coaches the same way Ohio State and Michigan football fans judge theirs: Making the playoffs is cool, but can you beat Vince Carter? … A few minutes into Pistons/Pacers — as Allen Iverson (17 pts, 12 asts) lit up T.J. Ford and Rodney Stuckey (21 pts) shot Marquis Daniels‘ eye out — Michael Curry realized Indiana’s guards couldn’t hold his guys off the dribble, so he unleashed an Iverson-Stuckey-Will Bynum monster that continually created buckets for themselves and open looks for Detroit’s bigs. Antonio McDyess turned into David West, sticking like 40 mid-range J’s, most of them thanks to Iverson. It looks like A.I. and ‘Dyess have formed an immediate chemistry, as ‘Dyess either plays Tom Rathman to A.I.’s Roger Craig, or eats off A.I.’s drive-and-kicks. It’s like Iverson is thanking McDyess for helping facilitate his escape from Denver … The Pacers hung around, mostly due to Danny Granger‘s 42 points, but Detroit’s old-heads all stepped up in crunch time to make crucial plays. ‘Sheed hit the go-ahead three with two minutes left, Rip (28 pts) had a couple key buckets to hold the lead, and Tayshaun altered a good-looking T.J. Ford shot that was Indiana’s last chance at forcing overtime … T-Mac is back, and earlier than expected. Ten days after he said he’d sit three weeks to rest his knee, Mac almost dropped a triple-double on the Warriors, finishing with 24 points, 10 boards and nine assists in a win … In the first quarter of Hawks/Heat, Josh Smith fired a cross-court pass that went into the stands and actually hit somebody. If you had seen the Miami crowd yesterday, you’d know that the probability of that happening was the same as if you blindly threw a dart into the crowd at a Larry the Cable Guy concert and hit a Black person … We’re out like Heat fans …

Yep, Vince Carter is bald. Before the Nets went on their exhibition Euro trip, I hadn’t ever noticed because he always kept his head shaved. But over in Europe, he didn’t want to deal with European barbers messing up his head or something of that sort, so he didn’t shave for about a week and the balding patterned showed up on his head. He’s always looked kind of older than he really was because of the knee pads and the achy running style so to me, it’s somewhat appropriate. I can imagine him in his 50s, with spectacles, thin sprouts of grey hair, looking like a pleasant old man.

Second, brutal top five lists – classic example of just looking at the points scored statistics. Zach gets his points but is the worst defensive PF in the league – to say nothing of his other faults. Sheed? Seriously, this year? Top 5 PF’s: 1) Duncan (if you don’t list him as a C), 2) KG, 3) Dirk, 4) Bosh, 5) Amare.
As for PG’s: 1) Paul, after him it’s Billups, TP, Williams and Nash in any order.

What does being a rook have to do with being on of the Best.
Example
Lebron
Durant
Howard
Melo
Dwade
Hell I could go on for days about rookies who were instantly the best. Also Right now Zach is playing better than pretty much everybody. In a minute his new name is gonna be “Zach 20-20″.

I disagree with you fed!!
PG’S
1Paul-not best ever-but very good!
2Parker-if he doesnt get hurt-its not even close!
3Williams(same as above)
4Harris-needs to get more assists though
5Billups-Denver’s record speaks for him!
And fed- baron davis is more like boom fizzle!!
PF’S
1Garnett-hate all u want-he gets it done!
2Zach-he might not play a lot of defense-but he sure can score and rebound-in any system!
3.West-just wish he was more consistent
4Amare-actually threw a game winning pass last night-who knew!
5Dirk-offensively-a tough matchup, but his defense is worse than anyone above.
I dont have Duncan, or Jefferson on here because they’re playing Center

but doesnt have great numbers. David Lee-double double man-but plays no defense- and is he playing center??

Dagomar says:
Seriously, SledgeHammer is pretty good but Aesop Rock is on another level.
The last time a rookie was instantly among the league’s best was when guys were still doing multiple years in college. Now rookies are usually raw. Lebron was maybe the best rookie we’ve seen Duncan, but he wasn’t an all-star in his first year and he didn’t deserve to be. Rose is a damn good rookie but he’s still raw as hell (his passing and shooting especially need work); if he’s an all-star it’ll be because the East is weak at the 1 and the 2. Rose certainly isn’t one of the best five points in the game; don’t confuse potential with current reality.
Another thing on Randolph: he’s also one of the bigger losers/team-killers I can think of in the NBA. And there’s this:

Max says:
If we’re talking top 5 PFs right now, I’d take ZBo over Amare, and I’m not a fan of Z’s game. But he brings it every game on the offensive end and actually seems interested in rebounding (unlike Amare). Z completely killed the Blazers last night — the Blazers announcers kept saying “I know Zach, he’s not going to pass it here”, and Z would take it into the crowd and still finish every time or draw a foul.
I hope JRich’s arrival in Phoenix frees Amare up to use his talent a little more, so that such a ridiculous comparison can no longer be made. But I wasn’t encouraged by noticing that after Howard left last night’s game with an injury, Gortat went off on the Suns after not scoring a point all season. Amare seems just as allergic to D as Zach.
December 13th, 2008 at 11:12 am
Dagomar says:
Personally I think he’s a moody, selfish douche who doesn’t play hard or well when the chips are down. He’s all about personal glory and not about the success of his team. I think he concentrates on scoring because that’ll get him acclaim but ignores the more difficult/less visible parts of the game that makes good players great. He’s one of the best fantasy players but no way in hell would I want him on my team. There’s a reason Portland and NY both traded him for scraps.

come on, we all know that duncan is a pf, give the man some credit and put him right at the top. pf’s-duncan, kg, dirk…pg-paul, nash, dwill….these are players you can build a team around. they might not be the flashiest of players that i know you all love, but they’re all fundamentally sound and get the job done. their team’s record can prove that. just my opinion though.

EZ,Dag…I’m with Fed on this one. You need to watch Randolph more. He might not be your kind of player but he makes use of every bit of his talent (at least offensively).
I don’t even know if the “being a douche” thing still applies. Yeah, he was a certified Jail Blazer, but on the Knicks he was pretty quiet and I never heard anything about him being a cancer. If anything, he was one of the most drama-free guys on Isiah’s Knicks. I bet if you ask the Knicks, they miss Jamal more as a person, but ZBo more as a player.
I never said Z was a superstar, though. But when I watch him, I know what I’m going to get, good and bad. I watch Amare or VC or Sheed, and I don’t know what I’m going to get, and it drives me crazy. Two different types of evils, I guess.

9)mayo (16.65)
10)williams (15)
and as for z-bo ahead of duncan, lets look at numbers here
ZR 21.6 pts, 11.2 rebounds (so goodso far) 1.6 assists, .3 blocks (getting worse) 1 steal, 2.58 turnovers, 2.8 fouls, 37 minutes and an efficiency of 22.53 while shooting 47%
TD 21.1 ppg, 10.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.8 blocks, .4 steals, 2.27 turnovers, 2.5 fouls in 35 minutes, shooting 53% and holding eff of 25.55

FWIW, I defended ZBo, but only to play along with the conceit in this thread that Duncan was considered a center (established by Fed or Vinny)…and also to establish a counteropinion anchored in the reality that he’s been more consistent so far this season than folks like DWest or Amare or Sheed.
No way I put ZBo anywhere in the same universe as Duncan or Garnett, though, if we’re back to considering Duncan as a PF (which I do believe he is).
