Clinical Depression
Dirk Nowitzki (photo. Monte Isom)Remember when everyone — from rec league dudes to NBA free agents and just about anyone else outside the Eddy Curry archetype — wanted to play for the Suns? With each guy on the court getting all the shots they wanted, they looked like they were always having fun and they were winning (separating them from the current-day Warriors). But now, having lost four in a row after getting smacked by the Mavs last night, the Suns look depressed, confused and just bad … In the decisive second-quarter run, Dallas capitalized on all the things Phoenix didn’t game-plan for: Jason Kidd hitting threes, Brandon Bass dominating on both ends, and J.J. Barea looking like an All-Star. By the time Dirk checked back in and really started making the Suns’ lives miserable, it was a clinic. The Mavs were getting whatever shot they wanted, they moved the ball, and someone always seemed to be open. On the other end, it was like whoever in purple received the first pass was jacking — and bricking — whether they were open or not. It was like “Seven Seconds or Less,” the When Everything’s Going Wrong Edition. And whenever the Suns got kinda close, the Mavs would run off a few shots in a row and make it a blowout again … Dirk was ridiculous, dropping all but two of his 39 points (17-for-25 FG’s) in the first three quarters and giving Amare a migraine from sticking so many shots in his eye. Jason Terry scored 19 off the bench, and Barea went for 18 … Everybody got in on the act, too, from Erick Dampier hitting jumpers (that seriously may have been the first baseline J we’ve ever seen Damp hit, and we’re going all the way back to Mississippi State) to Shawne Williams getting enough burn to grab 12 boards … But what happened to Gerald Green where he went from starting to barely getting off the bench in a blowout? When G-Money did find his way onto the floor, Doug Collins said the worst thing to happen to him was winning the dunk contest, because he got a big head and forgot how hard he had to work to be a complete player and not just a dunker. So THAT’S why LeBron and the other superstars won’t do the dunk contest. Now it makes sense … Every time they showed Terry Porter, he was walking back and forth with this puzzled/pained look on his face, his hand raised like he was going to call a play but then never did. And it wasn’t just because his team got killed last night. Porter always looks like that, like he’s thinking, “I hope no one finds out I don’t know what I’m doing.” … Is it time for the Suns to drop the new system and go back to running? Shaq says he’s down for whatever. As weak as the Pacific Division is after the Lakers (Warriors, Clippers, Kings), Phoenix is pretty much guaranteed a second-place finish. But the way they’re playing now, no way they’re getting past Round 1 in the playoffs … Ironic that Terrell Owens was able to diagnose the Suns problems as a lack of chemistry. But we guess he would be the expert … Charles Barkley on T.O.: “He’s got Tiger Woods‘ Disease. They wear medium and small shirts to make their body look better.” … To quote reader Baron Von Faulk, “sweet beard of Zeus.” … Welcome back to the Spurs we all know and can’t stand. It seemed like they were in for a back-and-forth battle with the Nuggets for the first few minutes, when neither team could miss, but then San Antonio got that signature ball-movement/Tony Parker penetration (22 pts, 8 asts)/corner three/Duncan post-up (21 pts, 12 rebs, 7 asts) game going and ran away with it … You thought the Spurs flopped? How about Nene hitting the deck like THIS GUY after Parker gave him a forearm to the chest? That was just shameless … Anyone else catch when Reggie Miller called Mike Fratello “Lance Bass“? … In the first half Bruce Bowen took a pull-up two while someone on the Nuggets — it sounded like Kenyon Martin — screamed “OH HELL NO!” Bowen bricked … Speaking of, if you still have a question for K-Mart, let us know HERE. And for the following edition of our new “Post Up” series, we’ve got Josh Childress. Any questions you have for Chill about Greece, the Euroleague, the NBA and anything else, post them HERE and he’ll answer the best ones … We’re out like the return of flopping …

best i can figure, they need to figure the rotation a little better, they need something better then bonner (mahinmi is supposed to be healing up well), and they need to get the rust off. they still need some youth but the biggest issue is the inside, they are sparing with thomas’ minutes so they are stuck with oberto’s slow clumbsy ass (i HATE his “i dont grab rebounds i tip it out to the wing) and matt “i wish i was half the player horry was” bonner. not a big fan of his at all. oh and udoka KILLS ME, that guy never saw a shot he didnt like. some nights he is on, most nights he is relatively worthless.
they are also sparing bowen minutes trying to get the other guys figured out. i really dont have issue with pops minutes, or with finleys game as long as it is in smaller minutes. i see manu, tony and tim all averaging more minutes then they have in the last 3-4 yrs. i expect they will get to the 2nd round but thats it, more then likely losing to the lakers or hornets in the 2nd round.

I want Terry Porters head on a platter this guy is ruining my team with his whole approach personally I was hoping they would’ve gave the job to Avery but they were probably penny pinching the situation. What this guy is doing is pissing off the future of the franchise(Amare,) making the former mvp look like his good days are behind him which I don’t believe(Nash,) and relying on the “Give the ball to Shaq in the post,” way to often. Then we got back to back games against the Mavs and the Hornets, I know we haven’t beat the Hornets so far in the last 2 seasons these two games were big to me in my eyes with Nash playing against his old team, and finally getting a w against the Hornets. So what does Porter do rest Shaq, say Nash has the flu, against a team we have yet to beat since their rise to power in the west behind Paul, to boot getting blown out by the Mavs by 20 points pretty much the entire game, and as dime said this guy really doesn’t know what he’s doing. On one note the Suns were throwing up bricks left and right, it would seem the only two people who came to play last night were Amare and Nash so everyone else does deserve a little bit of the blame, and Amare put in all that work in the off season to get burned by Dirk huh it only makes sense that all that work didn’t include suffocating the guy your covering. Porter needs to go back to run and gun or get the hell out of town his system will not work with the Suns plus if he loses his job that doesn’t mean him and Steve Kerr have to stop dating. I’m out like Terry Porter for coach of the year peace!

So Dirk has 39/9 against Amare and Shaq and all some people can talk about is how his game is flawed because he’s white? Unbelievable. The idea that all black players are athletic/tough/dunkers and all white players are fundamentally sound/good shooters/soft is one of the stupidest notions out there. It’s obviously racist, easily tossed by looking at different players, and proof of a deeper ignorance that continues to taint our societies.

and dag, it would be more considered stereotyping than racist. usually for it to be racist, it would have to be putting someone down. naming a common genetic thing such as athletic ability or saying most black people have brown eyes isn’t racist…plus ur always gonna have acceptions to stuff. That being said, there are black guys who are soft and join the chess club…there are some good white dunkers (not really many but some) etc…I mean technically hes right, look at some of the black euro players, their athletes and not set shooters (petro, petrius, parker) as opposed to guys like (dirk, darko, pavlovic) So race does play a part in certain things, but you can’t base EVERYTHING on it which alot of people on forums where u can freely run your mouth with no fallback constantly do.
On a final note, dirk is a softy no matter if he was all 3 of ranger johns known cultures.

Man do you even know what it’s like to play in European countries such as Greece or Serbia? It’s pure pressure. The fan are not your average american fans (i did say average) that eat their hot dogs and drink their beers all games and sometimes react to a play.
So if Dirk misses a shoot in crush time that’s because he’s white, european and too soft. But Baron Davis can keep jacking up shoots and miss games to injuries..yet nobody will make any link to the colour of his skin. You know what is racism? It’s when you start making assumptions on people/races/origins and take them for granted. You’re just a racist piece of shit. But I guess it’s always easier to speak than to think…

Plain and simple.
You can’t tell me Bargnani, who thrived in Europe, has been hardened, battle tested, or knows the “pure pressure” of TOUGH BASKETBALL.
Baron Davis jacking up shots because of ego, and Dirk being soft in the clutch have TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ROOT PROBLEMS.
My claim is that Dirk’s stems from growing up in a sheltered, unchallengind, and frankly, causcasian environment.

I would agree with the unchallenging environment part. However, throughout history, successful sportsmen in popular sports (i’m not talking about golf here…) have come from the popular layers of society where people face more challenges than if they were in the upperclass. A white guy coming from the street (Wayne Rooney…Anyone?) will have the same fire as a black guy. It’s nowhere linked to race.

Thats an interesting implication brought on by what i was saying, and what i have been saying this whole time. I definetly agree with the class distinction being a major influence on the mental toughness of a player. Case in point – Kyle Korver vs Ron Artest. Maybe thats a bad example, but you get my point.
However, we live in a world where class distinction and race STILL have a DIRECT, CO-RELATING RELATIONSHIP. Anyone who thinks otherwise is ignorant, and simple Naive.
Of course theres exceptions (which all the haters will now bring up), a la Grant Hill, but stil.. Dirk is a prime example of what im talking about.

There is a co-relating relationship but it tends to vary with culture as well. I can relate to some of the French players in the NBA that to me are soft (Petro, Moiso back in the day, Ajinca, Diaw…) and see, once again this is not a race thing (Rigaudeau (mavericks), Weis are white). So again, it’s not automatic and I think it’s dangerous to go for negative stereotypes when race is concerned.
This said, I’m just sick of the euro-bashing that happens in the comments section. (even though i just bashed the French). I hope you got my point!

And I can’t even say out loud about what some people would say about Big Sia’s theory. You think Ron Artest is more mentally tough than Kyle Korver? That is crazy. Mentally tough does not mean mentally fragile, I’m pretty sure.
But Grant Hill doesn’t exactly hurt the class distinction argument, maybe Kobe, but even still there. Grant Hill is more like the Wayne Rooney example.

#ak47- for years we had to listen to how the euro players are ‘more fundementaly sound’ than american players. so i think part of the euro bashing is a reaction to that!
being that were on the soc/economic struggle- when your fighting to escape poverty everything is a battle! so wheen you come from a poor background you tend to ball like it means everything. but for every ron artest there is grant hill-different economic backgrounds- different approaches(shit grants father was a pro-football player-hence more money!) Larry bird came from a poor b-ground-he played like it meant everything-dirk-not so much. Big Sia is right(about the class distinction) you would have to be naive to not factor economics into the conversation. But he’s wrong its not just because dirk is white-its because he is from middle class euro background. just my opinion.

JIM
Are you serious? Just cause you might be violent, abrasive, outspoken off the court, means nothing about on-court toughness. It takes a man to play the type of defense artest does. Plus, Korver isnt a weak player. He’s just not as mentally hardened as someone like artest (again that was an extreme example)
And BTW, Grant Hill grew up Rich. Check your facts before you throw rocks at the throne.

ok guys, you ALL need to go do a little research, there are only 3 races on this planet, the 3 i named. all the other “ethnicities” fall under one of those 3 cats. middle eastern would fall in the mongoloid category. researchers over the last couple of years have been making a case for there to be a 4th added an “astrialod” (or something to that effect). so while hispanic, native american, european and all that are different ethnicities, they are not races. so if a person is “not black (negroid) and not white (caucasoid) then he MUST be asian (mongoloid)”
GEE, yeah a trade would be nice but they dont have anything worht packaging. who are they going to ship? oberto/finley/udoka for d-howard? lmao they just dont have it.

Uhh yeah, Grant Hill grew up rich, like Kobe. But Grant isn’t known as a tough guy, unlike Wayne Rooney, who grew up poor, so check your reading comprehension before you sit on the toilet. And Ron Artest is not even remotely mentally tough.

its not a good discussion cuz were one post away from some idiot sayin the wrong thing cuz their miss informed or like u said urself naive.
Jim, grants a duke guy, enough said. its like in “he got game” your not gonna find many euro guys gettin drilled like that by their parents just to play ball.
and ranger, yes their are 3 main races, but u flat out said if he wasn’t white or black hes asian…asian and spanish are totally different as are asian and arabic lol…that might be the worst generalization ever. so anything outside of white or black is one race? I mean if you REALLy wanna break it down, no ones one full race.
December 5th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
AK47 says:
@Bron42
Dirk was MVP and Parker got finals MVP. Diaw got MIP. We’re getting there…slowly. But ten years ago, beside the likes of Kukoc and Schrempf (who played college Bball in the States if I’m not mistaken), seeing foreigners in the NBA was not a common thing. It’s a slow walk. You also have to think of the ratio foreigners/us and see that only few us players are successful on the big stage and as a consequence, even less foreigner.
@vinny
I thinks this goes both ways. People (=Media) in America tend to put the physical tools first because that’s what makes the business attractive and that’s what’s sell the tickets. So if you want to make a euro player noticable, you put another set of skills first(fundamentals…whatever you call it).
December 5th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
rangerjohn says:
sorry bron42, but you need to go read up, there are 3 races, asian and spanish are different, asian is considered mongoloid, while spanish is considered caucasoid. damn man you guys dont know how to read or what, race and ethnicity are 2 different things. black white and asian are RACES, hispanic is caucasoid, arabic is mongoloid, european is caucasoid, african is negroid. by the way bron, where was persia? where is iraq/iran/packistan/saudi arabia and so on? they are all in ASIA!!!! the midle east is in ASIA!!!!! damn get a globe and hell look up some of this stuff.
it is not a generalization so much as it is a FACT!
December 5th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
AK47 says:
But that doesn’t mean that’s the way it is: a euro player like Marko Milic came to the NBA as a gifted athlete and was never successful where as a more “fundamentaly oriented” player such as David Robinson (I know he was an athlete) has success with a full repertoire of skills.
Just so that everybody understand, I don’t defend euros against common sense.

Big Sia,
So you are saying all white dudes are not clutch? All white dudes choke? They can’t be taken seriously? Tell that to Larry Bird, one of the most clutch players in the history of the league.
Dirk has a tendency to disappear. That has NOTHING to do with his race. I know plenty of black players that don’t show up when it matters, too. Again, some dudes are just soft mentally. There is no connection with that and their race. You sound stupid saying things of that nature. Think, bro.

@ rangerjohn
Yeah, you’re right, there are technically only 3 races in humankind, the three you mentioned. But whether that’s fact or not, a lot of people don’t like being labeled into such a broad category. Besides, while America is obsessed w/ black and white, the rest of the world focuses solely on ethnicity. Evidence is all the rivalry between European countries, or Asian countries, or African tribes, and so on.
December 5th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Three Stacks says:
What exactly is is that makes Dirk soft? He routinely puts up good numbers, carried the Mavs to the Finals a few years back (beating a few very good teams on the way), and then his team choked/the refs gave Dwyane the chip.
Yeah, his team lost as a 1 seed to GS, but that series falls on Avery’s shoulders more than anyone else.

you are correct is stating the USA is preocupied with black/white while the MAJORITY of the rest of the world is worried about ethnicity. my entire point has only been that if you are saying black/white or that you are not either then you ARE asian. my entire point was if you say you are not black or white but you are hispanic then you would be wrong.
you know it was more to see who actually pays attention here, who actually can read and comprehend an entire post or conversation, and to see who has even A LITTLE education. not to say the others are uneducated but come on the 3 races of humanity is soooo 9th grade. i have to say thanks 3 stacks at least there is 1 person here wwho paid attention.

December 5th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Bron42 AkA Your Moms Best Friend says:
*ranger, we all pay attention but while ur right, its kinda a outdated generalization..thats like saying a chinese person is the same as japanese and someone for PR is the same as a mexican. so for the kid to say hes NOT asian, isn’t really that wrong. cuz if i remember, didn’t all humans originate from africa? anyways i got my degree and havin to bring up all these history questions years later is makin my head hurt lol
*three stacks and dag, No one even knows why dirk won MVP. They change the standards every year…is it best record? is it overall best player in the league? is it the best scorer? is it the guy who would effect his team the most if he suddenly retired (kobe would have like 6) etc..its just like when nash won his the first time tons of people had better stats and were more important to their team but he still won it. Scoring doesn’t suddenly mean ur not soft. And stop dayin refs gave dwade the chip. Him droppin 40 in like the 4th and dirk missin foul shots to ice it and then kickin shit in the halls (him knowing he choked) are why dwade won the chip. Its just like Agent Zero missing his foul shots…he choked too, but even he has more of a killer instinct than dirk. Thats why i call guys like dirk and yao soft…their both legit stars but neither has that MJ,Kobe,Wade,Tmac,Shaq,Pierce etc..take over the game drive and which is why i don’t see them ever being great. They will always be stars because their the top guys of their culture to come to the nba, but i dont see them being hall of fame guys like the others.

Dirk is not soft, and Dirk is clutch. Here’s some stats to show you:
http://www.82games.com/CSORT11.HTM
Third in the league last year. You’re a broken record about Dirk being soft and clutch, and you’re not alone, but you’re still wrong. Watch the games or check the numbers and you’ll notice.

there’s an entire video devoted to D-Wade doing offensive flops. If you’re really going to bring up how many points he scored in the 4th quarter, or of any full game in that series, feel free to see how many free throws he took, and the kind of “fouls” there were on him. Kthnxbye
December 5th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Three Stacks says:
If everyone who doesn’t win a chip is considered soft, then there are only 12 non-soft players in the L every year.
I dunno, no matter how I look at it, Dirk is a baller. Yeah, he’s big and his game is suited for the outside, but what makes him “soft” also makes him the most versatile player at his position. I guess it goes both ways. Like a bisexual.

Also, there’s this
http://basketbawful.blogspot.com/2007/07/word-of-day-stern-button.html
I realize that, while a fine site, basketbawful is not a final authority on these matters. However, for those that spend most of their time on the ground between Dwyane Wade’s legs, or get all of their news on the NBA from Dime (Dirk soft! Dwyane good!), it’s a pretty harsh wake up call to the fact that Wade has historically had one go-to move. And that is the “run into someone and hope that I get the call”, which won him a championship.

Fu*k Dirk. the dude is soft. You get Peja, Dirk, Pau, Nash, and Diaw versus Kobe, Bron, D-Wade, KG, Tim Duncun, who do you think would win? My guess is the Kobe and co. They have the killer instinct to finish you off. There ain’t no if or buts about that. Dirk is soft, and he should have not won MVP that year, and Nash should have not won two in row. Shaq dominated the league for countless years, and he only won one MVP, how sad is that?
