‘Cisco Treat

Francisco GarciaFrancisco Garcia, Dime #23

Kobe blamed it on empty Arco Arena and decent hotel food. (”I probably missed the cowbells, just the cowbells and the food poisoning,” he said after. “The place has changed a lot. Even last year, we came in and there were a lot of Lakers fans.”) If he wanted, he could have blamed it on the Trap Game Theory (looking ahead to the Suns on Wednesday), a simple case of bad vibes (Lamar Odom’s headband had him looking a little too much like Smush Parker), or maybe the fact that he and the rest of the Lakers couldn’t/wouldn’t guard the likes of John Salmons and Francisco Garcia. Without Kevin Martin (ankle) in the lineup, Salmons and ‘Cisco lit up L.A. from the wing positions to the tune of 21 points apiece, slashing and dropping threes in the Kings’ upset win last night. Snapping an eight-game losing streak, Sacramento also got its first home win, and might have bought Reggie Theus the rest of the season — or at least until All-Star break — to prove himself and save his job … Kobe scored 28, but he had another bad shooting night (9-for-25 FG’s). Plus Andrew Bynum was a non-factor, and the Lakers’ bench didn’t do much of anything … As Spurs/Mavs went from the fourth quarter to overtime to double-overtime, it was like no one wanted to be the hero. Tony Parker (29 pts, 10 asts) had his chances, as did Manu and Dirk (35 pts, 10 rebs), but none of them could convert their attempted game-winners. That left it up to Bruce Bowen, who drilled a corner three for the go-ahead bucket with 1:30 left in the second OT. Funny, we were just talking about guys in the League who have that signature money shot (i.e. David West from 18 feet, or Troy Murphy’s straightaway triple), and Bowen’s corner three was mentioned a few times. The off-glass shot from the angle by Tim Duncan (32 pts, 14 rebs) also got a lot of love … The other day in Smack we compared J.J. Barea to Steve Nash from a pure scoring standpoint, and some people thought we were crazy. But here’s Tony Parker: “[Barea] is a little like Steve Nash, dribbling 100 times. Sometimes it’s tough to guard him because you don’t know what he’s going to do.” See, sometimes we get it right … Cavs/Raptors was less contest and more coronation. LeBron broke the all-time franchise record for steals (held by Mark Price) in the first quarter, Big Z broke the record for rebounds (held by Brad Daughtery) in the second, and the rest of the time was a LeBron highlight clip, where he must have broke some kind of Cleveland record for dunks in one game. On his way to dropping 31 points in a blowout, it seemed all of LeBron’s points came off dunks (he even threw in a Karl Malone S-Curl Special) and wide-open threes (including one to beat the halftime buzzer) …

ShaqShaquille O’Neal (photo. Chenoa Maxwell)

Isn’t Shaq supposed to be washed up? Tell that to Andrew Bogut, who’s been getting murked by The Big Flash Of Brilliance twice this year; giving up 29 points to Diesel last month, then letting Shaq drop 35 on him last night. Like we said before, Phoenix is starting to play like they were supposed to when they got Shaq in the first place: running, slinging threes from all over the place, and still holding it down in the paint with Shaq and Amare. When they’re really in a rhythm, they spread the floor to where it seems like it’s 60 feet wide and it’s impossible to guard them all … Rashard Lewis may be having the better season, but Hedo is still The Guy when Orlando needs a big bucket. Down two with five seconds left in Portland, Hedo inbounded to Dwight Howard, took a handoff coming around a pick, and lofted a fadeaway from deep over Travis Outlaw. Glass, ballgame, Outlaw standing there looking like he can’t find his dog in the park … The Blazers had the game won late in the fourth, until the Magic slapped a two-man trap on Brandon Roy (30 pts, 9 rebs, 5 asts) and totally threw off whatever Portland was trying to run. Stan Van Gundy did some tongue-in-cheek clowning of himself when asked about Hedo’s game-winner, but his defensive moves late in the game deserve credit for handing the Blazers their first home loss of the season … Mehmet Okur (the 2nd-best player from Turkey according to Ahmad Rashad) had a game-winner of his own in Minnesota, getting past Al Jefferson at the top of the key and sinking a mid-range banker off one leg with about two seconds left. On the Wolves’ last possession, they tried to run some of play that we think was supposed to go to Rashad McCants, but he threw it away on the inbound to give new coach Kevin “Isiah” McHale an 0-1 record … It seems a lot of people want to hand Derrick Rose the R.O.Y., but is he even better than O.J. Mayo? We argued it out in the latest of our “Who’s Better?” series; click HERE and tell us who you’d pick between Rose and O.J. … Did you happen to catch AMC’s hour-long tribute show to Samuel L. Jackson? One of the Dime crew’s favorites was getting some kind of lifetime achievement award, which meant tons of clips from his 1,396-film resume. One time Sharon Stone came out and gave this overly dramatic speech that she capped by saying, “The ‘L’ is for ‘Legend.’ Samuel Legend Jackson.” And from there they went into a montage dedicated to Sam’s cussing. “I’M TIRED OF THESE MUTHAF****** SNAKES BEING ON THIS MUTHAF****** PLANE!” … We’re out like the Lakers’ cloak of invincibility …

    On Bosh:

The Raptors sucking is not all on Bosh, not by a long shot. A very long shot.

But last night showed me that he’s still head and shoulders below a Lebron James. He’s less talented, obviously, but the difference is most obviously mental: when challenged he tends to wilt as often as rise to the occasion; when toughness is demanded he rarely gives it. Lebron’s three at the end of the first half? Money. Bosh’s runner against Portland? Not so much. Even something simple: since Lebron has entered the league he’s worked on refining various elements of his game (the latest? Free throw shooting. Before that defense). Bosh has done so too, but it’s more about improving what was already easy for him (scoring, for example - especially from long range). Bosh’s defense remains absolutely woeful, and it’s worrisome that it seems more a product of poor effort than anything else. On that: too many fadeaways, too many long shots. I think 13 million a year or so qualifies you to drive to the net, doesn’t it?

Anyway, Bosh is a spectacular talent. But I was reading something written by an NBA scout the other day, who refused to put Bosh in the same category as Lebron or Kobe because Bosh did not force his team to win. There might be some truth to that. Right now Bosh is less his hero Kevin Garnett than Pau Gasol, and he’s trending towards the latter.

It’s tough to be an elite team when your franchise player might be better suited to a secondary role.

    Hi hi from Jurg.

Thank you for today’s smack which is funny.

Can someone who lives in big city new york city please tell Jurg where to see best basketball pickups. Big Jurgy is going to the big citi with the statue and can try some euro magic there. and i will keep shooting until i win.

    thank you from jurg. hi.

  7. Sweet English says:

No mention that Yao was a BEAST last night? The guy looked like he’d been reading your Ten Softest Players in the League article and was trying to prove a point.

The glass, ballgame, lost dog line was gold but you gotta admit, there wasn’t really much more that Outlaw could have done, that shot was an answered prayer.

  8. Sweet English says:

    whoa. Italics ahoy!

  9. jl90 says:

dude it was like 2002 all over again with the kings beating the lakers at arco and shaq breaking the 30 point barrier.

also, dime could you find video from the spurs-mavs game last night in overtime where bruce bowen totally kicked jason terrys legs out from under him? it was a completely dirty play that just epitomizes the spurs to me.

btw why no mention of derrick rose cutting himself by mistake? didnt he claim to sit down on a knife or something?

  10. bamba says:

no mention of the detroit game? hehehe

  11. smity far away says:

    @ jl90

peep the older posts for Derrick Rose knifin himself.

speaking of rose, he had a couple of nice dribble drives against Ny last night (based on what i saw of the highlights.) and i;m starting to get excited about him and the bulls. i could even see them making the playoffs. ben is playing like he has been the last few years, and luol seems to be waking up a bit. based on that alone, the could sneak in. then hughes and gooden playing like they’re worth something…

    @ sweet english

nah, no mention of yao, but then again they don’t really have anyone that should be able to guard him so he should put those numbers up (but i think if he would have gotten to 20 boards they might have had to give him some love…)

lastly, how long before bron takes hold of the rebounding record for the cavs too? i think he is capable (unless he leaves…)

  12. Amar says:

wow, good night in the NBA for Turkey — Hedo and Memo both hit game winners . . .

Utah won a game they had no reason to win, esp when they were down 9 points with 4 mins to go. I guess the wolves suck worse than the Jazz. Kevin Love missed 4 FTs in a row with the game hanging in the balance, he had something like 15 boards, you just know that OJ Mayo would have made all 4 . . .

  13. Amar says:

Btw, Ronnie Brewer (no mention in Smack) had 25 points off of very ridiculously efficient shooting, 5 boards and 5 steals . . . dude needs to be invited to the alley-oop contest at some point (I don’t know if he’s creative enough to be in the dunk contest, but he does have the hang time and length — 6′11 wingspan).

  14. smity far away says:

    @ Amar

are you figuring that the northwest will be as tough for utah to win as people are saying (are/or your jazz better than the new nuggets and the jazz?)

  15. smity far away says:

    *and the blazers

  16. s.bucketz says:

travis outlaw is garbage…he doesnt D up for shit and every shot he takes is either gunna go in lookin ugly or b a airball..most unaestethic player in the game and he jus lost the game for the blazers….how the fuck r u guna go under a dwight howard screen for hedo at the 3 point line wit that much time left???i called the play once i saw hedo inbounding it and now my girlfriend thinks im a psychic

  17. rangerjohn says:

im sorry but bowen is not coordinated enough to intentionally have kicked terrys leg. how about that flag 2 where terry only got a flag 1. dirty play deserves dirty play right?

jjbarea is more clutch the DIRK! dirk had his 35 points but did anyone else notices that he only made 5 POINTS after the THRID QUARTER!!

the refs where sure letting them play after about 1 minute left in the 4th, foul after foul on both ends.

i just hope the 52 minutes duncan played doesnt carry over to tonight against the hawks.

and yao is still soft, what is it they say about a the sun and a dogs ass?

  18. that's whats up says:

Derrick Rose should get a tattoo of stitches on his other arm, just to look symmetrical

  19. PDaddy says:

Dagomar….did you write that? That is absolutely bang on, perfect description of Bosh. 100% true, his defense is very suspect, relying mostly on help blocks and his offense relies too much on a jump shot for a big man, against portland he had steve blake in the low post and shot a fade-a-way??? His game started to wilt after he made noise about wanting to be MVP…go figure..

  20. rathauneak says:

“Glass, ballgame, Outlaw standing there looking like he can’t find his dog in the park ” ….CLASSIC

  21. Amar says:

as much as it excites me to see denver being a top 4 team in the west right now, and portland being one of everyone’s adopted teams (pre-bandwagoning?) I have to point out that the jazz, for all of their stupid losses this season (bobcats, knicks, etc) are right there with those two teams — but unlike those two teams, the jazz starting line-up has yet to play a single game together. (portland fans, don’t tell me shit about martell webster, he’s not better than booz, memo or dwill, three guys who have missed at least 5+ games for the jazz EACH)

utah’s not going to sort itself out until the last two months of the season though. plenty of time for something crazy to happen the NW. I think it’ll go down a little like how it did 3 seasons ago, with the division being locked up in like the last week of action.

  22. Spliff 2 My Lou says:

Detroit seems to have become irrelevent to Smack. Our boy Youngfed mentioned a few days ago that the Pistons weren’t concerned with one loss. It’s been two more losses since then. Maybe it’s time to be concerned.

  23. Amar says:

I don’t know who Hedo is sleeping with, but Ahmad needs to re-asses who’s the best Turkish ‘playa’ out there, when people see Memo’s wife. (seriously, what is it about goofy looking Euros that models go nuts for?)

  24. Amar says:

detroit will be ready for the playoffs. they are in san antonio mode right now — it’s not even Christmas . . .

  25. QQ says:

    HEDDDDDDDDDDDOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

To those haters trashing the Magic for an easy schedule… We just beat one of the best teams in the West. And don’t go ‘it’s a desperation shot, brother’.

A fucking win is a fucking win.

  26. QQ says:

    And… Detroit sucks.

    That is all.

  27. Phileus says:

    @ Post 17:

Not sure what the saying you’re looking for is, but maybe it’s something like:

  28. smity far away says:

lol @ QQ and lol @ Phileus

it’s been a crazy year so far with big teams slipping and little teams coming up…and little teams losing a lot too. clipps, charlotte, memphis, minny, okc, dc… lets see who wins fewer games than the best college team of the country.

  29. sans says:

    AMAR…

marrying rich is a model’s retirement fund.

I’m stoked for Bron ajnd Z etching their names in the Cavs history books. Feel bad for Mark Price (although no one that ever plays for the Cavs will ever touch his freethrow records–but Bron could easily take out his assist record) but not for Brad Daugherty–that man was softer than a twinkie. Z is the best center in Cavs history, so good for him.

You know, like a complete loser I know, I’ve written to Sega Sports about including All Time teams in the 2K series, but to no avail. Seriously, I would kill to run digital with Price, World B. Free, Bron, Larry Nance (maybe Shawn Kemp in is 1st year in town) and Z. Bench of Terrel Brandon, Andre Miller (I don’t think KJ can count seeing as he never got any burn), Daugherty, Craig Ehlo (who’d never get off the bench), Kemp, Ricky Davis (he did carry our team for a minute), and Thunder Dan (who hated living in Cleveland) would be sick to snap sticks with. Who’d be on your squads All Time Team?

Dang Ranger lol looks like Phileus didn’t take to kind to ya last statement.

Of course you knew you were leaving yourself open when you asked what that saying was lol.

Anyway in other news. The Hawks got dropped by the Rockets. Still no Tracy. Still win one and lose 1 then win 1 and lose 1 for the Rockets.

Ranger I trust The Hawks will be almost just as tired, but San. An should be straight in droppin them again. My wife would be so mad if she knew I was doggin her Hawks.

That lil Curry kid’s nickname should just be “Swag”. Boy reminds me of Rip some.

I feel sorry for teams in the East that got to see LeBron this year. He is going to be a prrrrooobleemmm!

Dream, Horry, Sam, Charles, Pippen, Tracy, Yao, Ron, Moses, Ralph Sampson, Robert Reid, Otis Thorpe, Mad Max, Eric “Sleepy” Floyd and Brent Barry.

Mario Elie and Steve Novack didn’t make the cut although I liked both.

  36. aj says:

Not sure if anyone’s said it yet but if Outlaw had any fundamentals in his game, he woulda blocked Hedo’s game winner. If a right-handed shooter is shooting a J, you’re supposed to block with your left hand. Woulda been game over and Portland would still be undefeated, though you can’t blame the loss on that one play.

  37. aj says:

    ** undefeated at home **

  38. rangerjohn says:

    Phileus
better go look those stats up again, there is a HUGE difference between 20 and 10 and the 19 and 9 he is really averaging. more important numbers, he averages, almost 3 turnovers and more then 3 fouls for his career AND in the last 3 seasons he is averaging 53 games and a 1st round exit every year (or no playoffs at all)

yao is the softest 7′6″ guy since that 8′ 6″ guy stuck his hand down the dolphins neck to get the plastic bag out a couple years ago. he is not as soft as bradley but thats not saying much. not as soft as dirk either.

at 7′6″ he should be averaging a hell of a lot more then 9.2 rebounds and has only averaged (slightly) more then 10 rebounds in 2 seasons. but then he had a nice game yesterday (except those 5 t/o the 4 fouls and the 2 times he got blocked). my guess is he is on a record pace for BEING OVER 7′3″ AND BLOCKED IN ALMOST EVERY SINGLE GAME. i mean didnt nate robinson block him a couple years ago? like on a 12′ jumper facing each other, not even a weakside “sneaky” block but an IN YOUR FACE block.

  39. aj says:

    @Ranger

Your hating on Yao is like me saying Ranger is probably 6′0″ and should have mad handle like Steve Nash and the speed of Tony Parker and be able to make it rain like John Paxton and be able to dunk like Nate Rob.

Yao aint Dwight or Shaq supersized. He’s more like Shawn Bradley x 50, which of course isn’t a knock on Yao, it’s just stating what he is.

Put a guy in a box and you’ll be disappointed. Look at Kobe, was the best player in the L and his fans still hated him cause he wasn’t MJ.

  40. P_Dizzle says:

Thank you Sac-town. You just bought us all another week off for hearing about how “great” the Lakers are.

I watched the Jazz/T-Wolves game and it was the ugliest thing I have seen since Sloth (Goonies) breeded with Cousin It.
    http://withclawsandangryfeet.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/wow.jpg

  41. P_Dizzle says:

… and Memo’s jumper to win the game was the most awkward thing I have seen since Michael Jackson’s nose falling off his face.

  42. rangerjohn says:

    AJ
you guys take shit to serious really.

(as stated before and as most here know i am a rockets season ticket holder) i hate on yao because to many make him the “end all be all” of centers. many claim “best center in the nba” and yet HE IS NOT! not even close.

  43. JCARR says:

    @P_Dizzle
lol MJackson at nose falling of off his face

    Hedooooooo for three…
    Kobe looses (love lockdown)…
    Shaq drops 35?

  44. Max says:

Where are all those Lakers fans that were saying Bron and Cleveland were irrelevant, and that it was all about the Celtics and Lakers this season? Probably not watching John Salmons (Salmons!) own Kobe in the third quarter of last night’s game. Salmons has got to preserve a recording of that game for life, so that he can show his grandkids how he totally outplayed one of the best players in the game.

Watching the Kings — without KMart no less — school the Lakers just a couple of nights after putting on such a horrible display of basketball against the Nuggets gave me a huge case of whiplash. Even Beno (one of the league’s most useless point guards) was weaving in and out of the Lakers’ defense like Steve Nash. Lakers looked soft inside (again) and overly reliant on Kobe.

Spurs-Mavs was a good one. Never been a Mavs fan, but JJ Berea has really impressed me. Funny to watch Parker try to shake off Terry’s fake gesture of sportsmanship after Terry’s shot to his head on the break in OT — everyone in the gym knew what kind of player Terry was, and so did the refs apparently (even though it could have been a flagrant 2).

  45. baron von faulk says:

@jl90 - I bet you loved Bowen’s ice cold dagger in your team’s/fans’ collective eye, hahahaaaaaha.

Oh also on that Bruce’s 3, if you wanna be real about it, he was fouled because Dirk stepped under him on the way down and almost pulled a “Bowen” as you’d say and broke dude’s ankle, now that’s irony.

Of course let’s not fail to mention that Terry is the real (wannabe) thug, he basically Lawrence Taylor’d (or Mike Singletary’d, your choice) our guy Tony Parker. He is always talking so much g.d. trash and flexing and crap, I loooove that he cost y’all the victory losing the ball OOB near the end of 2OT, his flagrant didn’t help either.

Hedo’s shot was STONE COLD also, whew!

Lakers lose to the Kings, “I’m Lovin’ It” like McD’s baby!

  46. aj says:

    @Ranger

I just hate irrationality. Yao is one of the best centers of the past 6 years or so. Of course he doesn’t compare to the all-time greats and would have been fodder just 15 years ago in the mid 90’s but still, Rockets fan frustration should be more at T-Mac as he was to be the savior, not Yao. Too bad neither can stay healthy enough to see how much damage they could do.

It’s like expecting Barak and his posse of Democrats to be any less corrupt or shady than any other politician.

yao was a number 1 pick, while not every #1 works out, he has been better then average, the problem i have with him, he doesnt get better, he stays the same, itsl ike his work ethic is not good. he doest he same things, never tries to get better (or maybe he does and just fails at it) hell his conditioning is still TERRIBLE! he has been in the league for what 7 yrs now nd he is the same player he was in year 1 except now he cant stay healthy so IMO he has actually gotten worse over all. the rockets will resign him, he will be a rocket for life and they will go NOWHERE with him (same goes for tracy, they will go nowhere with him).

they need to just cut their losses and go another direction. if they do resign yao he better come in under 10 mil a year. he is nothing more then a glorified 3rd option.

  50. that's whats up says:

right now Spurs got the 7 seed and would be facing Denver on the road.

    That would be perfect.

    Lake Show All Time:
Kareem, Wilt, Shaq, Mikan, Worthy, West, Magic, Kobe, B.Scott, Elgin Baylor, and D-Fish (only cuz of the shot against the spurs)

And just for kicks, look at the guys who came there at the end of their careers - GP, Mailman, Glen Rice, and Mitch Richmond.

  54. Xavier Garcia says:

ranger I wasn’t ready for that dude lol.

Hey um Dime somewhere somehow can my dude LaMarcus Aldridge get some love. Talk about a big who goes unnoticed.

Ok I will say myself that dude has no real defense. Then again neither does Yao or Amare.

Offensively LaMarcus gives nice numbers and big plays. I didn’t see the game but I know just off of highlights alone he got to “Beast” plays on Dwight.

Personally I would take that kid more than a lot of bigs (forwards or centers) on his effort, offense and running of the floor alone.

I think Detroit all-time would be sick. Dare I say Portland all-time would be kinda nice too.

  58. GEE...If Shaq eva got burnt would he be "The Big S.T.D."? says:

JJ Barea is good but I don’t know if he is worthy of the last shot good.

  59. baron von faulk says:

ah that’s cool jl90, sounded like an equestrians fan there for a minute so I had to dog, but now I know you’re just a bruce-hater like 99.999% of nba fans. nothing wrong with that!

I do have a problem with the generic statement that he epitomizes the Spurs as a dirty team, that is just ridiculous to be honest and outdated as well (Horry is gone, although he ain’t dirty either imo, and Bowen doesn’t start anymore).

Spurs are the classiest organization in sports, not like the champion Celtics and kg with all his stupid antics.

But according to most they are dirty, old, and boring, believe me we S.A. fans hear the same thing over and over like a broken record…yeeet they keep on WINNING!

  60. fallinup says:

haha! I’m rollin right now….Speedo Guy. Hilarious.

  64. jl90 says:

i dunno baron i totally respect their championships and winning and whoever their gm is is fabulous with his picks. i just think they whine a bit too much and have some annoying “kg” antics of their own

  65. baron von faulk says:

Wowwwww at the Jason Richardson trade. Diaw will start at PF now, I am guessing Felton may go next (NY?)

jl, I feel ya, but you can’t name one Spur that tries to punk on anybody or crawls on the ground like a dog to intimidate another player. They keep it pretty damn classy.

If you are talking about Timmy with the bugeyes look well I can’t say anything to defend that, he seems a little better lately at least.

Tony does whine a lot, and I mean A LOT, but man if you’ll watch he gets absolutely hammered on by the trees (or guards even) and gets practically NO respect from the refs (prolly cuz he’s a Frenchy!). He is really feeling himself after that Finals MVP is what I think.

Of course everyone hates on Manu for his style, but he is a stone cold killer down the stretch, you can’t name a better player in the last 5 minutes of a game (Kobe is as good).

Man am I slurping today or what, I feel like RangerJ defending the Spurs with a vengeance baby!
