Kobe Bryant (photo. Chris Sembrot)You don’t have to remind the Lakers that basketball is a game of inches. For the second night in a row L.A. was one bounce away from stealing a road win, but as it stands they’re 0-for-Florida and head into Monday’s game at Memphis on an unfamiliar two-game losing streak. Early into Lakers/Magic, though, you knew Kobe and Derek Fisher were on a mission to avoid that second straight L. Kobe took almost 20 shots in the first half alone, finishing with 41 points (14-for-31 FG’s, 11-for-11 FT’s), while Fisher (27 pts) attacked the basket like we haven’t seen him do since he had a fade back in the day. Combined with Dwight Howard picking up three fouls in the first 15 minutes, it looked like the Lakers were gonna roll. But the third quarter turned into The Jameer Nelson Show. He dropped 15 in the frame (finishing with 27) and put Orlando ahead going into the fourth, where it was back-and-forth down the stretch. Dwight gave the Magic the lead on a pair of free throws with a minute left, then with about 20 seconds and L.A. down one, Kobe drove and sucked in the entire defense before kicking it to a wide-open Sasha Vujacic in the corner. But just like Kobe’s last shot in Miami on Friday, Sasha’s three went almost all the way down before popping out. Dwight hit two more freebies on the other end (he was MONEY at the line in the crunch time), and Kobe missed a last-gasp three at the buzzer … Good thing Orlando won too, otherwise Keith Bogans might have hurt somebody. He was guarding Kobe all night, and if getting outscored 41-3 wasn’t frustrating enough, Keith wasn’t getting ANY help from the refs. In one sequence, Kobe trucked him and Bogans was called for a block, and the very next time Kobe touched the ball, Bogans again hit the deck while seemingly causing a turnover. Only the first ref on the scene called it out on Bogans, who threw a temper tantrum on the floor until another ref reversed the call. Later on, Kobe appeared to travel, and when no whistle blew, Bogans looked like his head was gonna explode … E-mail from Pat: “The Magic announcers called Marcin Gortat “The Polish Hammer.” I almost fell off the couch laughing.” … Once upon a time, Chauncey Billups owned Steve Nash to the point where the rest of the Suns were paying him rent. That wasn’t the case last night. Billups and Nash went even-up, trading big shots in the fourth before Nash took over. He stuck the go-ahead triple with about 2:40 left, then after Chauncey missed two in a row, Nash came back and hit another dagger trey. Nash went for 16 points and 11 assists in the win, while Billups had 18 and eight, but also turned it over seven times … With the Warriors playing their version of lock-down defense, “only” giving up 103 points, Jamal Crawford hung 50 on Charlotte’s D. The box score says JC went 14-for-26 from the field (and 17-for-18 FT’s), but every time we checked, he wasn’t missing anything …
Andre Iguodala (photo. Kelly Turso)Al Jefferson (34 pts, 13 rebs) pretty much destroyed Yao, helping his All-Star case in a high-profile matchup with his plethora of post moves and some embarrassing dunks, but Yao hit the dagger in Houston’s road win, sticking a fadeaway over Big Al. Now, we often get accused of being too critical of Yao, but what are we supposed to say when Aaron Brooks out-rebounds him 10-4? … For the most part, Andre Iguodala was great on Saturday. He put up 26 points, six boards, six assists and two steals against the Pacers, wreaking havoc all over the court. But you know Philly fans — they’ll only remember that when it really mattered, A.I.2 didn’t produce. Clinging to a one-point lead in the final minute, Iguodala whipped a pass off the rim that set up an Indiana bucket. After the Sixers regained the lead, Iguodala let T.J. Ford drill a jumper in his eye with 3.8 seconds left, then on Philly’s last chance, Iguodala got into the lane but missed an awkward lefty shot from point-blank range … Gutsy win for Indiana. They played without flu-ridden Danny Granger, Troy Murphy and Marquis Daniels; relied on T.J. (25 pts) and Jarrett Jack as their go-to guys; started Roy Hibbert, Brandon Rush and one of the Graham twins; and gave extensive crunch-time minutes to Josh McRoberts, who was actually kind of a beast here and there … Andre Miller had a triple-double in the loss with 14 points, 10 boards and 12 assists. Other monster Saturday stat lines: D-Wade scored 43 in Miami’s win over the Nets, and Chris Paul had 34 points, nine dimes and eight steals as the Hornets beat the Kings … As you can tell from the comments HERE and HERE, Raptors fans are one more lethargic loss away from bringing torches to Jay Triano’s next practice. On the positive side, no one’s gonna be too mad about the Raps getting lit up by the Spurs. Tony Parker (24 pts, 8 rebs, 10 asts) carved up Jose Calderon, San Antone rained about 600 threes, and T-Dot’s suspect front line made Kurt Thomas (12 rebs, 3 blks) look like Artis Gilmore in his prime. You can’t really blame the Raps for that last one, though. It’s not like they have two All-Stars in the frontcourt … We’re out like half the Pacers …

KG was a glue player for sure; for his D and intensity. He slapped Big Baby and Kendrick Perkins into manhood. Sure, thanks to national television, he’s one of the biggest dicks in basketball, with surprisingly few technical fouls.
QUESTION: Is it that KG is getting hate for the way he behaves, or does KG act like a dick because referees allow him to taunt other players? That shit wouldn’t happen on my court.
Of course HS players are easier to control than freak athletes.

Dime mag is a joke when it comes to their Yao coverage. You guys take an outlier game where Yao only gets a few rebounds, and try to act like he doesn’t pull down 10 boards a night. Ming is in the top 15 in rebounds and top 25 in points coming off major surgery. I’m sure I could pull some off-nights for Dwight or Big Al and slant it to look like they can’t rebound, but that would be shitty and biased (Dimelike) reporting on my part.

Dagomar says:
So Kobe missed 2 buzzer shots in 3 games? If he were Lebron people would be bashing him left and right. Love watching him though, that first half was nasty. I was pretty impressed with Dwight sinking free throws like he was Jose Calderon; maybe he has it in him to be solid from the line in the clutch?
“Raptors fans are one more lethargic loss away from bringing torches to Jay Triano’s next practice” - AWESOME line. Yes, we are. Last night’s loss was somewhat understandable - or would have been if O’Neal hadn’t completely outplayed Bosh on both ends of the court. I’m starting to hope Bosh is coping with some kind of nagging injury. He staggers around the court like a man with a couple of broken legs, and he doesn’t even dunk the fucking ball anymore. And he’s in love with long perimeter jumpers - imagine, a franchise PF whose greatest quality is his speed, settling for three-pointers and long twos. Meanwhile, as great as he is offensively - and he’s pretty damn efficient - Calderon is maybe the worst defensive point guard in the league. He makes Steve Nash look like KG out there. I bet even fucking Mouse Ridnour is circling the dates he gets to play the Raptors. This team is rapidly becoming the NBA’s bad joke. I don’t even want to go to games anymore because I know I’m only paying for about 20 minutes worth of entertainment, before the score gets too far out of hand and a Lebron or Kobe sits for the rest of the game.
December 21st, 2008 at 10:56 am
Dagomar says:
Oh, about Yao: he averages 9.5 rebounds right now, and averaged 10.8 last year. But the critical point: he only plays 33 minutes a game. So it’s not like he’s a poor rebounder, and he has had plenty of 20-rebound games. Dwight has had some brutal rebounding games this year too (although obviously he’s a better rebounder). So yeah, Yao isn’t Bill Russell, but he’s better than you guys give him credit for.

Also, it is a shame what has happened to the Lakers. I can definitely see them falling apart, to little pieces. Shattered.
The biggest setback they’ve had, I feel, has been Bynum’s gross developmental regression. They were are a lock for the chip, assuming he improved from last year, and now, he’s looking very sucky.

Watch how Memphis gets done. Thank you for tryin to weed out those fans who jump off cuz they team hit a “rough 2 game losin streak” but they ain’t out here. Last I seen we still number 1 out west and am hopin everything out east keep goin how it is cuz won’t be nuthin better in May than Celts and Cavs killin each other before the Finals.
Lakers since 85 so if you think I’m jumpin off now, you must be smokin lol Got thru the Sedale Threatt era, the Ced Ceballos era, the pre and post Shaq era, I’m here to stay. Lost 2 games and the shots went 3/4 way down and popped out…oh well
peace

the magic an a ok team but they get sweept if they make the finals vs the spurs or lakers
bron
u r right on the yao thing btw u know i think there have been a couple of teams that could win 72 games in the 90s like the bulls did (05 spurs 08 celts 02 kings 01 lakers) but the comp is harder today only the celts have a chance because they play in the east

I would be willing to bet anything Wellner is back on this site within 3 days. People like him need attention.
Still, I can’t believe he went off crying because no one would tell him how great he is and be his friend. Wellner, if you’re reading this, you lose serious man points.
Lakers suck. I no longer believe they can win the title this year unless some things start to change. Bynum has been playing like shit. Need a better defender at the PG spot. Hopefully my negativity will serve as a reverse jinx.

Doc, I went to TU, and think he’s much better offensively than Mardy, plus he’s got the size, since it seems like NBA gm’s put a lot of importance on the size of a 2 guard.

Dime - Yao gets outrebounded by his PG, that’s a shame. What you’re supposed to say, though, is that no other center in the game (outside of maybe Big Z) could hit a fadeaway over Al Jefferson. AND that he was clutch. Yknow, to show that you don’t actually hate the guy.

@Three Stacks — Speaking of “man points,” have you seen the ads for that show “Bromance”? (Think “Paris Hilton’s BFF” with guys.) I swear I saw a dude CRYING because he wasn’t gonna get to be some other guy’s friend. That’s a loss of about 500,000,000 man points.

Regardless of his last weak rant, Richard Failure will probably be posting on here again within the next few days… Unfortunately.
If the ability to post comments on Dimemag ever gets shut off, it will 100%, without question, be Richard Wellner’s fault.
It’s rare that you see people who post online be as ignorant and derogatory for no reason whatsoever. Even with the droves of idiots that make unnecessary and unwanted comments in the public discourse, Mr. Wellner is in the upper echelon of the most disgusting.
