Dwyane Wade Accused of Palming

Dwyane Wade

Honestly, Mike Dunleavy has more pressing problems to worry about than whining about the refs letting Dwyane Wade get away with palming the basketball (especially when the refs could hit Baron Davis with it all the time).

“His ability to carry the ball right now, he’s getting away with that,” Dunleavy said. “He (carries) left to right, right to left, but he just does it fast so nobody sees it, I guess.”

Wade’s response:

“There’s a lot of things going on that could be called,” Wade said. “So if you want to nitpick at everything, then he doesn’t have enough to do. He needs to do something else.”

Considering that Dunleavy can’t even seem to get his guys to run a play – any play – he probably shouldn’t be going there.

And where would the League even really begin with cracking down on palming? They’ve tried to do it in the past, but it only slows down game action, especially when you have to call it multiple times a game on guys like Dwyane, Allen Iverson, Baron Davis, Tony Parker and Monta Ellis, just to name a few.

    Hater.

D Wade does get away with the carry, especially when he splits the double team with that over hand dribble, but Kobe picks up his pivot foot on his spin moves, Melo takes an extra step from time to time, Manu and Dirk flop on a breath, and Mike Dunleavy is still a coach.

Should they be stopped? Sure. Will they? Nope.

  3. blah says:

i don’t care if a game takes 4 hours, it’s necessary, the palming is ridiculous. Ppl i play against don’t even know it’s illegal cuz everyone they look up to does it. THEY SHOULD CRACK DOWN FOR 2 SEASONs (oops on the caps) so everyone can get it out of their system. once ppl adjust it won’t be a big deal for the players, they’ll just be playing the sport they get paid so much to play, correctly. Carrying bastards.

  4. Ross says:

He gets away with more than that.

  5. Jim says:

I agree they should crack down on it, but after I read the first sentence I just thought…Baron Davis? But you were already on it.

  6. Michorizo says:

If it is a carry, traveling, palming, etc and refs see it…they should blow the whistle. It shouldn’t matter if it is Dwayne Wade, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James or Frederic Weiss. Every correct call should be made for the integrity of the sport.

  7. fallinup says:

Mike Dunleavy shouldn’t worry about if Dwyane is palming or not. He should just worry about his own palms…which are effectively wrapped around Donald Sterling’s jock.

  8. justice(knicks fan) says:

    @blah

you sound like a man that has been on the wrong side of some nasty crossovers, that one that tore off the bottom half of ur right nike and dislocated ur left knee cap did it for u huh…

it’s not that bad really it’s a lot more the league needs to work on

  9. LakeShow84 says:

Uhhhhhh duh.. its good though.. every player who has a good crossover can get away with it.. How about his spin move which covers 10-15 feet lol..

But dwade is a beast.. Dunleavy’s just hating because he thought Baron Davis was better.. Woops

I used to play on the plaground with someone who did that and honestly its easier to pick than a regular crossover if you body upinto the person when they are doing it

  10. dagwaller says:

This is one of those things that the League will never be able to fix. It’s the same as holding in football – there’s an instance of this foul probably EVERY TIME DOWN THE COURT, but how can you expect a.) for the refs to see it every time, or b.) a game to go on with whistles going on every 15 seconds?

That having been said, I hate Dwyane Wade. Hahaha.

  11. LakeShow84 says:

but then again i dont play with Dwade, Bdizzle or AI lol

  12. blah says:

    @justice,

actually no i haven’t. I had a guy tear his achilles guarding me once though. I had a mean crossover in my younger days (for rec ball, anyway) but I hated seeing people do it by carrying because anyone can cross people up if you carry. Y’all nyc cats are the worst, they’re not particularly hard to guard but it’s annoying as hell cuz they think they’re so good at it and really have no idea. I mean they really don’t know they’re doing anything wrong. That and the guys who take 3 and 4 steps all the time. Top two things that annoy me in basketball- NBA, rec, playground, whatever.

If you don’t think the problem is that bad, you’re prolly one of those guys that can’t dribble without carrying or drive without traveling.

  13. weng santos says:

The NBA should crack down on it. Definitely. What’s going on right not is about fundamental basketball as much as it is entertainment. The NBA crossover is ridiculously excessive- there must be a dribbling violation in it everytime and that’s why it’s so effective.

The NBA is failing as a global ambassador of the game, it’s ridiculous. Guys are mixtaping… that’s not basketball. But that’s what the kids are seeing. They come into my gym and do that and I have to correct it everytime because I know it’s illegal and they’ll get called for it.

I’m not trying to hate, but there’s a reason Wade leads team USA in turnovers of the palming/travelling kind in FIBA basketball. His moves don’t translate to the international level, because the refs there don’t care who he is, and they surely won’t protect him like the NBA refs do.

In the NBA, scorers like him, Kobe (who by the way shot horrendously in Beijing, not getting anywhere easily like he could in the NBA because of the stricter rules), etc. are too coddled by the refs. Breathe on them, it’s a foul. They’re taking 17 plus freethrows a game, it’s ridiculous. They’re carrying on every dribble. They get away with too much.

I thought these guys are supposed to be hardcore athletes? Let them crack each others heads, but make sure they play in a fundamental manner. There are rules to this game, and they must be followed for the good of everyone.

  14. srb says:

Kobe travels constantly on the pivot move as another poster said. he drags the foot all the time. i think i remember in that crossover video of him on iguodala yesterday you can see him drag it.

  15. jl90 says:

    wahhhh my team sucks wahhhh

  16. weng santos says:

Discontinued dribbles must be called for travelling, all palming must be called carries. Wade, Kobe, Skip, whoever does it, the whistles must blow!

I agree, the integrity of the game is at stake!

Right now it’s not a sport, it’s a show! Staged!

  17. the rocket cat says:

I think there are only three stars in the league who don’t palm: LeBron, Nash, and Dwight Howard, and Howard is only on that list because he doesn’t dribble.

  18. blah says:

my thinking is pretty much what weng santos is saying.

  19. florida_evans says:

Man,I been saying that for years.Even Skip said that everybody carries in the league to get from spot to spot.T-pain is especially guilty of this.

  20. Max says:

    >>>I’m not trying to hate, but there’s a reason Wade leads team USA in turnovers of the palming/travelling kind in FIBA basketball. His moves don’t translate to the international level, because the refs there don’t care who he is, and they surely won’t protect him like the NBA refs do.<<<

And this is why Wade flopped in the Olympics and the US failed to get a gold…oops, that didn’t happen did it? Last time I checked, Wade’s game translated well enough on the international level that he was pretty close to being the MVP on a team full of superstars.

You say you’re not trying to hate, but that rant you posted was full of it.

  21. dagwaller says:

Max, are you one of the people that expects the U.S. to win by 50 on sheer talent every single game? Maybe they should – if they followed the rules of basketball.

  22. R.ELI says:

HES THE FLASH. If he did it the refs didnt see it.

  23. Rafa23 says:

travelling and palming in the NBA are ridiculous.wade is bad, but ai is just annoying.
and if you say lebron doesn’t palm, ok. but he is travelling all the time. just search it on youtube. awful…
remember the game winner against washington in 06? wow
i still love the nba, the game is probably even better to watch. if you called the lifting of the pivot foot before the dribble, you would stop EVERY possession.

but the nba has to get it down at least a notch.

  24. YOUNGFED says:

How does someone carry fast? WTF, this dude sounds real bitter.

  25. weng santos says:

    @ Max:

I’m not mad at Wade, I’m mad at the NBA refs. Wade gets called for travels in FIBA basketball because that’s how he plays all the time and the NBA refs don’t call it so he never bothers to correct it.

Where exactly in my post was I hating on Wade? Like it or not, this is beyond him. I made an acute observation about the NBA game and how the NBA rules on dribbling don’t follow the international standard, or even basic fundamentals. That’s why it doesn’t translate as effectively in other places. It’s not about Wade, it’s about the game.

So what if Wade has a gold medal? I mean, I’m happy for him, but what does that have to do with whether or not dribbling violations should be called in the NBA?

There you go, using the team “MVP on a team of superstars.” So individualistic. That “me-first” or “I’m the best” mentality is what’s wrong with the NBA game, along with too much money, players not listening to coaches, and dribbling violations!

2 things: 1. It’s a team sport, and 2. Wade does palm. That’s not a knock on him, but a statement of fact.

The NBA needs to fix it.

  26. weng santos says:

All I want is for the NBA refs to do their jobs consistently and proficiently! Competent officiating!

No more superstar calls/non-calls! There is no such thing as “he’s earned that call.”

The ref’s job is not to affect the outcome of a game of protect players or worry about coaches and teams and repercussions. His job- his only job- is to CALL IT AS TRUTHFULLY AS HE SEES IT for the duration of the contest.

That’s my wish. You don’t have to share in it, but I will voice it out because the culture of pro sports needs an overhaul. I love basketball and as a coach, team manager, and league official for varsity sports (yes I am all three) here it pains me to see the game degraded for the sake of big names and entertainment value.

  27. Blue says:

damn…a lot of haters on here. last time i checked sports were a form of entertainment. the “integrity” of the game is dictated by the game itself. to sit on a high horse and think that you have more respect for the game because you don’t palm the ball than these guys who worked through blood, sweat, tears, and all kinds of adversity to be better at the game than any one of us who comment on this site is just ridiculous!

if anyone can do it, and the refs don’t call it, how is it advantageous to anyone?

why take the fun out of the game…after all, it’s still a game.

  28. dagwaller says:

Blue, they worked through blood sweat and tears, yes, but they aren’t done yet, because they still routinely break rules of a game that has – you guessed it – set rules! The integrity of the game is in its rules, not in how flagrantly you can break them!

  29. Borgs says:

A hell of a lot of palming and travelling goes unwhistled. It’s a bit of a joke at times. What’s totally ridiculous is how referees arbitrarily decide from time to time to enforce the travelling law on a player who does a perfectly legitimate catch, pump-fake and go move. Most of those calls are bogus. If the refs were as overly judicious on the palming, pivot-foot and jumpstop elements of the game, each standard affair would last four hours.

  30. Borgs says:

PS. Blue – you’re clearly a fool. Thank you for such a blatant demonstration.

  31. Mikey F Baby says:

What?! How does AI get dragged into this conversation? He only palmed the ball once back in ’97 and has since corrected the issue. Gimme a break

  32. justice(knicks fan) says:

Im not saying it’s not an issue but it’s tons of other things to worry about, bottom line is carrying the ball will not make u shitty player score 30, if u suck u suck if dwade or A.I decide not to carry guess what no one in the league wouldn’t be able to guard him anyway…

Chris Duhon doesn’t carry, but i wouldn’t rather have his non carrying ass than kobe…u don’t like it take it away.
and yes im a nyc pg and yes i did carry some on the playground but when it came to games i knew better..

  33. Blue says:

    Borgs…
I’m not the one resorting to name calling, so quite obviously, i’m not the fool.

the adults are having a discussion now…go play with your barbies please.

    @ dagwaller…
i agree that rules should be followed…i mean, that’s why they’re in place right. but the flow of the game isn’t compromised and everyone has the same advantage. i’m not saying it’s right, but it’s not as bad as it’s made out to be. besides, since when did mike dunleavy become the mouthpiece for the game! haha

  34. Max says:

It might be worth debating whether the NBA can fix things like palming, or discussing whether certain stars get away with palming or traveling more than others.

On the other hand, the leap of logic from this discussion, to the point that somehow these players aren’t effective players internationally because of their “bad habits”, is hysterical and wildly overstated. If we’re not beating teams by 50 points, it’s because the rest of the world has good players, NOT because they palm the ball less.

  35. vinny says:

i agree the nba shouldnt go the way of andi palming- but palming has been a part of the game forever-cousy, monroe, goodrich, west and so on.
all sports protect there stars 1 way or another(it is about people paying for entertainment)
and of all people dunleavy?? man if he isnt careful someone might accuse him of coaching before the season is over!

  36. dagwaller says:

Blue, I think that we can all agree that Mike Dunleavy has more to worry about than Dwyane Wade.

I agree with you that they couldn’t/shouldn’t call carrying it every time down the court, but if they started calling it a few times a game, you can bet that coaches would start telling their players to cut it out. Furthermore, I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree that it doesn’t happen as much as it’s made out to be. I see it an awful lot.

  37. Diego says:

The carrying/palming in the NBA sometimes is just ridiculous and should be called more often. Some of the big stars, who get preferential treatment all around, are particular offenders.

I am not even talking cross-overs. At least a couple of times each game I go to, I see some guy just lollygagging in the backcourt with the ball who will lazily palm the hell out of it. It is cazy. And although it may not make you a star, it sure the hell makes you a lot more effective if you can get away with such crap.

  38. Hate the Haters says:

    Really???
The only people who call carries are people who are tired of getting crossed up.
If you want to hate dwayne wade on this post you should post a picture of your ankles so we all know what you are really talking about…the fact that you can’t hold good dribblers.

There is such a thing as carrying. When it occurs it should be called.
There is such a thing as a hesitation dribble. Often times used in a cross over in an attempt to fool the defender.
All the haters out there are just tired of getting taken to the basket, and Mike (can’t coach my way out of paper bag) Dunleavy is just hating because his team sucks.

This is total garbage. I love all the people talking about how carrying needs to be called more often. You obviously know nothing about the sport.

IT IS YOU PEOPLE WHO DO NOT KNOW WHAT A CARRY IS.

These people think that every time a player takes a hesitation dribble it is a carry.

    IDIOTS.

A carry is when your hand moves all the way underneath the ball and you try to dribble.

  39. Hate the Haters says:

Whoever posted this is total garbage.

“I made an acute observation about the NBA game and how the NBA rules on dribbling don’t follow the international standard, or even basic fundamentals. That’s why it doesn’t translate as effectively in other places. It’s not about Wade, it’s about the game.”

Hey moron, we created basketball. INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS??? We are the international standard. And we kill all other countries even by their standards. The international leagues can make up whatever girlie 3 point line they want, but WE PLAY THE GAME OF BASKETBALL. You say so what if Wade won a Gold Medal. What did you ever do hater?

Also another reason that you’re an idiot.

2 things: 1. It’s a team sport, and 2. Wade does palm. That’s not a knock on him, but a statement of fact.

We all know it’s a team sport, thanks. But what’s this about Wade’s alleged palming being a statement of fact. No it’s not. Who the hell are you, God, supreme overlording referee of the league. Nope, you’re just a punk. Listen if you don’t like the NBA, fine, but shut up. The rest of us are just fine.

  40. dano says:

I agree. You want to see carrying? watch And1 mixtape bullshit. the refs in the NBA are the best in the world. dont think so? go down to your local YMCA and try and ref a game for 12 year olds, but make sure all their parents are in the stands and drunk first. then say that the refs dont do their jobs brilliantly.

  41. rkraicek says:

haha hate the haters and dano are probably wade and ai. dont expose us or else we wont ever score 20 points in a game again!!! lol

  42. hate the haters says:

    Rkraiceck

Admit it you are a hater.
    Simple exercise.
Hypothetically speaking let’s just say you’re right and dwayne wade and ai (i guess you hate him too) carry like crazy, they carry every game, one hundered times a game, so much so that it’s ridiculous.

Can you still not admit that with their athleticism and basketball skills (jesus, shooting skills alone) that they’d both still be among the best players in the league if we had objective robot referees who called everything that you considered to be a carry???

The honest answer is of course, yes, they’d still be among the best with or without hesitation dribbles (which you foolishly call carrying, probably because you were forced out of playing basketball by someone who was faster than you and more capable of handling the rock).

Honest question, but you can’t answer it honestly, because you’re just hating, that’s all, just trying to knock down the best.

Good for you buddy, have a good life, keep hating the best. I’m sure that will work out for you.

  43. hate the haters says:

Anti-NBA hate, it’s disgusting. Just a bunch of people who don’t watch the NBA bitching about how much greater college or international basketball is.

Shut up and go watch those because you are obviously not watching the NBA, especially not this year. It’s amazing.

  44. rkraicek says:

hahaha buddy, you nailed me i’m a hateful son of a bitch that is very dishonest. thank you for showing me that exercise!!!

seriously though you need to read the rules. have you ever heard of a slippery slope? how many steps should we let people take? 2 is the rule, but by your way of thinking, 3 is ok – because hey, they’re so good! let the superstars do what other people can’t!

so superstars like d wade and ai (cause i HATE that guy!) can take 3 steps now, and normal guys can still only take 2. and they can palm the ball…errrr, i meant to say they can take hesitation dribbles (no i never heard of that but since you must be the king baller of this website i thank you again for educating me! my ankles are actually really swollen from being broken so many times damn how did you know?!?!!).

so that means d wade can take 3 steps, palm the ball, and let’s see…let’s let him step on the out of bounds line, too, but only a little bit. because it’s within the realm of possibility, in your world, that he would still be able to make a move within the REAL confines of the court. because really, he’s an exceptional athlete, so he could shake someone like deshawn stevenson whether he stepped on the line or not – that extra 1 inch isn’t going to make or break his move.

and actually, now that i think of it, his range is really going up this year. he’s making jumpshots now – so let’s give him a little bit extra. if he steps on the three point line, it’s still a three – but ONLY if it’s by a little bit! cause he’s good enough that he would make the shot if he had only stepped back an inch.

so now we’re going to let the stars take 3 steps, palm the ball, step out of bounds, give them 3 point shots for no reason…or we could all just go with the RULES OF THE GAME. and acknowledge that YOU ARE AN IDIOT. no one is “hating” on your boy d wade, they’re just telling you the rules of the game and how they’re being broken.

GD, dime, can you put an idiot filter on this site? please?

  45. Vinny says:

@rkraicek- be careful what u wish 4-if they put an idiot filter on here all that typing you just did would be for nothing-they wouldnt let u post!!

  46. rkraicek says:

    wait – i don’t get it

  47. rkraicek says:

    i am an idiot

  48. vinny says:

    very good!

  49. vinny says:

    i kant reeeed!!! lololol

  50. vinny says:

ok who impersonated me-that post 48 wasnt me!! that shit aint cool.
