Five NBA Deals That Thankfully Fell Apart
Oden in Boston most likely means no ringWhile it’s always interesting to look back at moves that didn’t happen, it’s even better to find cases where a bad outcome turns good in the end. With this in mind, The Sacramento Bee looks at five deals that teams are thankful they fell apart. Take Boston for example:
“If the Celtics get the No. 1 or No. 2 pick after finishing with the second-worst record at 24-58 two seasons ago, it’s a mortal lock they get heavy into rebuilding and take Oden or Durant, and maybe trade Paul Pierce as part of the youth movement. Instead, the Celtics land at No. 5 and trade the pick to the SuperSonics in a package for Ray Allen.”
From there, the Celtics acquire Kevin Garnett, and the rest is history. Here are the other such moments of virtually done deals that fell apart…
1. The Celtics get the No. 1 or No. 2 pick in the 2007 draft
2. The 76ers trade Allen Iverson to the Pistons
3. The Jazz signs Jason Terry and Corey Maggette
4. The Kings re-sign Bonzi Wells
5. Billy Donovan becomes Magic coach
Which deal would have changed their team the most?

***The Celtics… They went from ‘wack to mack’, ‘bum to stud’, ‘losers to champs’
Iverson well it happened now… and the results arent pleasing so far
The Jet and Maggatte to Utah… Utah would be the capital of “Bad Porn”
Kings and Bonzi… no comment (self explinatory)
Billy Donovan… would of been one the infamous coaches who got fired before Christmas break. Stay in school Donovan!

I don’t believe in any of those Celtics trade. Gotta have been some under-the-table stuff there.
I blame the T-Wolves and the “Thunder”, obviously. Useless organizations.

The Celtics could have been broken up much earlier before the 2007 lottery disappointment. After losing to Indiana in the 2005 playoffs, the Celtics purportedly offered Pierce to the Lakers for Odom straight up and were rejected. Who knows what would happened from that? As a Celtics fan, I’m just glad the Lakers said no. I wonder how the Lakers would have done with Pierce and Kobe. They still would have lacked an interior presence and Smush Parker might still have been running the point but pairing up two of the best all around wing players in the game would have been impressive.
On the Garnett side, I don’t think Garnett ever gets traded if Minnesota just ended up keeping Roy. Minnesota probably wouldn’t have been championship contenders still but they wouldn’t have been bad enough to force them to trade their franchise icon.

The Kings would have been sooo much better off if Donovan stuck with his commitment to Orlando. They would have gotten Van Gundy. Instead, they gambled on 2 inexperienced young coaches and failed miserably
