How To Stop Brandon Roy

How did the Nuggets hold Brandon Roy to just eight points on 3-for-11 shooting last night? As George Karl put it after Denver’s win, “Give him two. Whenever he touches it, give him two players.” Also from the Rocky Mountain News:

“We had Dahntay (Jones) play him great,” Nuggets guard Chauncey Billups said. “J.R. (Smith) played him great. (Anthony Carter) played him great. It was a team effort.”

If Billups wasn’t so modest, he would have named himself. If he hadn’t been in a hurry to get out the door for a late-night flight to Portland, where the teams play again tonight, he might have named more players.

If you get the idea most of the guys who put on a light blue uniform found themselves at some point checking Roy, you’re right.

Obviously it’s not always that simple to stop one of the League’s top scorers, and as Roy (22.8 ppg) gets more mature he’ll figure out how to get his against blanket defenses. But with two guys dedicated to Roy all night, shouldn’t this have been one of those games where Greg Oden established himself as a scoring threat? Oden had just 10 points and three rebounds, again dealing with foul trouble while his counterpart Nene dropped 19 and 11 boards.

    Can’t be stopped.

    Just had a bad night.

  2. chronically_ill says:

Aint no stopping B-Roy. Dude is just too smart. He’s got an answer to every type of D thrown at him. I’m sure foul trouble held his game up more than the Denver D.

  3. YOUNGFED..."There goes the neighborhood like Fred Sanford next to Ned Flanders" says:

Damn Austin didn’t you say it was Billups who had him on lock in today’s smack. Sounds like Chauncey thought other wise. You slippin’ homie.

As YOUNGFED sheds a tear, “Damn I miss Chauncey”

  4. QQ says:

    Fed, I miss Chauncey, too.

    Because Iverson sucks so hard.

Eh yo, we should let the Chineese media loose on Greg Oden. My man got the grampa rolls on his forehead.

  7. Kudabeen says:

As steady as Chauncey has made Denver…They were a 50 win team last year. People are putting a lot on Chauncey and very little on the fact that Kenyon and Nene are balling hard and holding down the paint in a way Denver didn’t have the last two years. The playoffs will tell the tale. Chauncey is a floor general for sure and that is what they needed more than Iverson’s energy and scoring, but Nene and Kenyon and even Chris Anderson has been holding them down big time…

  8. control says:

I didn’t catch the game, was Brandon “Mean Mugggin” Roy still mean mugggin everyone within view of him even though he was having an off night?

  9. Kudabeen says:

Yeah it’s Iverson’s fault Rasheed doesn’t rebound or man the paint at all…

He may get beat looking to swipe at the ball, but really the whole pistons’ squad is stinking it up…Who is the leader? That has never been Iverson’s role…Piston’s need a real leader out there, because those Techs and the lack of execution is horrible…Blaming Iverson is convenient but not smart.

Anyone read what Tayshaun had to say today? He was saying the techs are causing a lot of their head aches. They give teams momentum, pit the Refs against them, and take Pistons out of their game… Coach Curry needs to start coaching and not talking so much…attitude doesn’t equal aptitude for the job…Dumars may need to pull a McHale and come down and secure the coaching position himself until he can find the best fit…

For real. It’s a good thing Rando found some steady employment with the Celts, because his pre-Celts mugshot is flat out nightmare terrifying.

  13. YOUNGFED says:

I thought it was hilarious too but you know dude look just like Rondo.

  14. Kudabeen says:
