Is Derrick Rose An All-Star?
After posing the questions,
Is Rose An All-Star?
As Andrew Katz wrote the other day, “Right now I know that I’d vote for Rose over Calderon. In fact, I’d vote for Rose over every other PG in the East right now except for Devin Harris.”
Bold statement in favor of the No. 1 pick, but regardless of the Bulls’ “Vote For Derrick Rose” All-Star campaign, the talk around the League is beginning to favor Rose becoming the first Bulls player to make an All-Star team since Michael Jordan did in 1998.
If you were hating on the stat lines of Rondo (10.2 points, 7.7 assists and 4.7 rebounds) and/or Calderon (12.9 points, 9.5 assists and 3.1 rebounds), you will definitely be impressed with the rookie’s 18.7 points, 5.9 assists and 4.1 rebounds per contest.
At 38 minutes a night, Rose is logging more time than both Rondo (31) and Calderon (36) and clearly has less talent surrounding him. With an 8-11 record, the lack of Ws and experience could eventually keep Rose out of the All-Star game.
What do you think? Is Rose an All-Star?

Scott says:
Its interesting because I’m going homer on this one and gonna say what is more impressive for a PG that he can score or that he can distribute or is it both combined, is it how many points he produces via both. In that case Calderon has Rose beat.
BUT, I’m going to revert from being a homer and say that Rose has played easily well enough to be that 2nd All-Star PG in the east, as of right now. He’s carried the Bulls through many games, and if his teammates could make shots his assists would probably be higher.
Harris and Rose should be locks for the squad, at least at this point in the season.

Benjamin says:
Of course calderon deserves more to be an allstar than rose…rose has yet some years to improve his pg skills..but indeed his style would fit in the allstar game..

Mr. K1X says:
not yet, let him shine in the rookie game. harris should get that spot first. y not Rondo, in the past its been about winning right??
December 5th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Wake says:
Definitely an all-star. Both Harris and Rose are playing at a very high level, but one of them is gonna get bumped off. Iverson is still in the picture and right now people are still going to vote for him for that starting PG spot.

dagwaller says:
I don’t know. Still some time. Right now, I would vote for Harris and Calderon.
I DO know that with Rose and Harris as the PGs for the East, it’d be miserable to watch. Lebron would end up having to play the point while these two fought D Wade for shots.

LakeShow84 says:
Eh Iverson shouldnt even be on the ballot as a PG.. what a joke..
But if Rose ISNT an Allstar then he will go hibachi on the whole league after the break.. and i would rather see that..
December 5th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
that's whats up says:
he may not be an all-star but he is really playing like an all-star
December 5th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
Celts Fan says:
Harris and Rose are the AS guards.
btw, Rondo’s clearly 3rd. If you actually watch games and see impact, you know Rondo’s clearly better than Calderon (#s are slightly less w/ less minutes, but he is AMAZING on D, Calderon sucks. He paces the best team in the league. Calderon’s team is disappointing. Not even clsoe to me.)
December 5th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
the rocket cat says:
That depends on whether all star selection depends on how good you are or how exciting you are. Rose isn’t yet one of the best guards in the East. However, he’s definitely one of the most exciting guards in the East. I think the all star game will be more fun if he’s there, but there are definitely guys who will have a legitimate axe to grind if he makes it over them.
Calderon, Harris, Rondo are all more deserving at point this year. Next year, it may be a whole different story. Personally, I think LeBron should start at point. Bring back some Magic memories. Showtime.

derrick rose is like the old stephon marbury.
not the stupid ass steph….the ‘96-97 steph that could actually ball.
but Rose aint gonna make it.
set his spot for the rooks/sophs game

rocky lobsterghini says:
only if he can play the rook game too. if not, let him stunt in the rook game. it will be glorious to see him dog the rookies, then break down the west guards and catch alley oops from lebron in some bizarro-fashion o_O

Derrick Rose is an all star!besides devin harris what other point guard in the east has provided there team with hope for the future & excedded expections thus far this season?Imagine if D.Rose had a legitimate low post presence on his team

got them..SCOOBY DO's says:
1st Devin Harris AllStar
2nd DRose should be an AllStar…..
He’s everything and more than what we expected he would be…from the jump!
3rd Rondo – he’s had a couple of good games…it looks like he’s turned the corner on understanding how to play…but shouldn’t make it as an allstar this year…
4th Calderon – he’s a good player..but not yet an allstar…
Rose -

if lebron and melo were not all stars their first year….than rose is definitely not an all star, lebron and melo had way better numbers than rose and they aint make it….
December 5th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Promoman says:
He still needs some seasoning, but he’s clearly a reserve at best right now. He’s got an outside shot of making it, but I’d be surprised if he does because of how political the All-Star Game is. It’s a popularity contest. LeBron didn’t make it as a rookie and he’s regarded as the savior of the NBA in the minds of most people.
December 5th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
got them..SCOOBY DO's says:
In Lebron’s rookie year 2003-4 he wasn’t going to crack the allstar nod over Tracy McGrady, Paul Pierce, nor Vince Carter…(in his rookie year) not saying he shouldn’t have….
This year If Jason Kidd, and Baron Davis who were the point guards in the east Derrick Rose wouldn’t have a shot! Fortunately for him you don’t have any allstar point guards, you have good point guards but not great.

got them…
Baron is horrible this season and JKidd will never, ever, make another allstar team. This is his twilight and it’s only gonna get uglier. Reality check–Rose deserves to play, seeing as the fans are going to vote in 2 two-guards (AI and Dwade) the coach is gonna have to pick a couple points to run with.
Question: is Mike Brown going to be the East’s coach? You can’t do it 2 years in a row, and it goes by record at the break. Doc can’t do it and Cavs are 2nd int he East. I don’t know if there has ever been a less deserving coach to do that but whatever. At least someone finally got in his ear about having Bron take some backdoor cuts instead of having him dribble 30 feet out all the damn time.

Mo says:
As far as guards in the East goes, right now I’m expecting Wade and Harris. Iverson might still get fan votes also. Then maybe Rose might be in there somewhere. Being a guard in the Eastern Conference might help Rose get in. All the good guards are mostly in the Western Conference.
December 5th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
Celts Fan says:
@Ian, my comments back in the day were taht Rondo, COULD BE better than Parker IF he MAXES OUT his potential. He’s TP’s clone on offense but also an amazing D if he maxes it out.
KEY WORD IS IF. nver said anything bout now.

drose is an all-star for sure and probably will be for the next 10 years. he’s an exciting young player – he’s averaging like 2 top 10 highlights a week!
do u think drose could go in the dunk contest? He’s def explosive enough.
December 6th, 2008 at 11:03 am
Celts Fan says:
@Ian, I know that, just puttign it out there so others would too.
and I mean that Rondo COULD BE TP’s clone offensively if he maxes out the potential. Not right now. I say that cuz they both came into the league with a BROKE jumper and have improved it (Parker’s had more time so his is obviously better, but Rondo is actually making a few now and before he used to be a worse shooter than Scal) both can get to the rim at will if they decide to drive (but Parker’s a MUCH better finisher right now, but again, give it time) and both use the teardrop (TP’s signature move, something Rondo’s working on.)
I see him like Devin Harris. It took Devin like 5 years to really become where he’s at now and he came in after 4 years in college. Rondo’s early on in year 3 (after 2 years in college, so he’s only 22.) I still think that in 3-5 years (when he’s 25-27, still young,) he COULD be right there. Thta’s all I’m saying.
and yes, right now, there is NO QUESTION that Tony Parker is better than Rondo. The only thing Rondo’s better at is defense and rebounding, TP OWNS him in every thing.
December 6th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Celts Fan says:
*everything else.
I don’t think that’s just me being a homer, right? The guy does just about everything (other than shoot well) and is only 22/in his 3rd year. It’s not ridiculous to project out 5 years – assuming he keeps working hard on his game, if he doesn’t this whole conversation is a waste of time – when he’ll be just hitting his prime, and think he COULD be an elite PG (which is right around the time Pierce and KG are in their mid-late 30s and would need him to take over if the Celts are gonna stay competitive.)

u must be crazy when duncan falls off parker will be the leading pg scorer every season easy.

December 7th, 2008 at 3:04 am

doc
btw u want paul to play with chandler west and peja
deron to play with boozer memo and ak
and parker to play alone??? tell me how that even makes sense? i would love to see an elite pg with 4 scrubs i dont think that shit has ever happened
