Is Jameer Nelson An All-Star?

After evaluating the point guards in the East and asking if Rajon Rondo, Jose Calderon, Derrick Rose and Chris Duhon were All-Stars, it is clear that Jameer Nelson wants his name included on that list.

Although like Duhon, he wasn’t even mentioned in the Eastern Conference’s “10 Potential All-Star Snubs,” Nelson is currently the architect for a 20-win team and on one of the best scoring streaks of his career.

“Heading into tonight’s game with Golden State, Nelson is averaging 23.2 points per game over his last five outings, including a big 27 in the Magic’s 106-103 win over the L.A. Lakers. It has pushed his season scoring average to 16.8, well above his career average of 12.0.”

In case you haven’t been checking the standings, the Magic are 21-6, have won four straight and eight of their last nine. A win tonight against former Magic “Bad Porn” and “the biggest mess in the NBA” would equal their best 28-game start in franchise history. Put it this way – Nelson’s playing so well even Kobe’s giving him props:

“Once he got that rhythm, you couldn’t stop him,” said Lakers’ guard and reigning MVP Kobe Bryant. “He has improved every year he has been in the league. Obviously I followed him closely from St. Joe’s until now. I continue to pull for him and couldn’t be any happier for him.”

What do you think? Is Nelson an All-Star?

NO!!!! Also Dime stop trying make up all these wanna be ass allstar’s. (Rondo, Duhon, etc.) Yall did the same thing last year with Hedo.

  2. Vinny says:

    NO,NO,NO!

  3. johnsacrimoni says:

Let’s see…Iverson and Wade will start. Then you have Rondo, Allen, Harris, Carter, J Johnson, Calderon, D. Rose. So no. He deserves props for stepping up his game lately, though.

  4. len-e says:

    no fucking way

  5. qUeSt?? says:

HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO………………. whats next, javaris critterton and mike conley??

  6. Mr. K1X says:

no, he is nice and he is having a really good year, but he is not on of the top 12 player in the east. that simple

  7. the cynic says:

no, Nelson would rather have 3 or 4 days off work then go to the all-star game, at least i would

  8. Kobeef says:

    Just wait ’til the playoffs.
Jameer will choke once people care about defending him.

  9. GEE...Talk that ish playboi! says:

I am going to say no, but I would like to see dude become one. He is a good dude and I like the way he plays. Houston should trade for that dude somehow.

  10. Coop says:

Jameer Nelson is arguably the worst starting guard in the league so I’m going to say ‘no’ haha.

Who’s up next, Dime, Jamal Crawford? gtfo haha

  11. smity far away says:

everybody before me pretty much summed it up.

also, no rest for the weary, ya’ll dont hear me…

  12. mules says:

is it really that much of a given that AI will start at pg this year?? There are at least 5 or 6 pg’s in the East playing better than him this year (Jameer included) and he’s not even starting at pg for his own squad. I know he’s a prolific scorer and all but he doesn’t know how, or doesn’t care to, play the point effectively. The fan voting system is retarded and needs to go away. They should really just have Kobe and Lebron (or Wade?) pick squads pick-up game style…that’d add a nice bit of drama to the rest of the season too.

  13. justice says:

    @mules

that would be sick fans vote for the 2 best in the league 1 east 1 west, then they pick up their squads limit one teammate of course with guard, forward center guidelines shit would be personal, someone would probably get hurt in the game though because it would mean so much

  14. mules says:

    @ justice
I wouldn’t have the fans vote for the 2 best…maybe all the coaches vote and I wouldn’t make it an east/west deal…I think it’d be cool to be able to see CP3 throw Dwight an oop every now and then.

  15. Big pink pig says:

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WAAAAAAAAAY .

  16. BROGDEN says:

    Nah. Not this year.

  17. BxBaller says:

Coop, Jameer is definitely not the worst pg in the league. I would easily have him on my squad than Rondo or Calderon.
And what happened to rewarding guys who are playing on a good team? Toronto is ass, and the Nets are .500, so why shouldn’t Jameer garner some all-star talk.

  18. BROGDEN says:

    FAR FROM WORST THOUGH!

  19. JCARR "K1N6" says:

    “NO. NO. NOooo.”

  20. Ansonious says:

No but if he keeps playing like this he’ll be shoe in next season.

  21. DNICE says:

Jameer been on a tear over the last 2 wks. He is
    shooting 51.7fg% & 40.5 3pt % for the yr.He has
really improved & is a big reason Magic are playing
    so well.

  22. Coop says:

BX, if you would take Nelson over Rondo or Calderon then you need your head examined. He can’t run a team he can’t shoot (though he likes to) and his defence is sub-par.

He’s averaging 5.3 assists. 5.3! In his BEST year. That’s horrible. He’s got at least 3 guys who can score in bunches and he gets 5 assists? GTFO!

Calderon is clinically efficient and averages about 8 assists. Rondo is even more efficient and averages 7.5 assists and more rebounds.

Name the starting guards worse than Nelson.

  23. BxBaller says:

    @ Coop,
Ridnour, Rondo, Calderon, whoever the pg is in Minny, Alston, Udrich, Mike James, do I need to go on.

  24. mules says:

In terms of this season’s efficiency rating, Nelson’s 4th in the East. Behind Harris, Rondo, and Calderon.

  25. qUeSt?? says:

@ coop im with u man, jameer is the worst starting pg in the league. And I think A I is underrated, he is playing better than calderon, rose, nelson and rajon rondo. yall just dont know because all of the players that i just mentioned are new and they are getting more news coverage than iverson. Anyone who chooses rose, nelson, rondo and calderon over a i is crazy

  26. DNICE says:

    Jameer 9/9 FG 4/4 3PT 22PTS 7 AST 5 REB IN 3 QTRS
tonight. Not bad for the “worst starting pg”. As of
tonight he is shooting .531 FG%,that’s tops for all
NBA pg’s. Watch some Magic games this yr before you
    form an opinion.

  27. CJR says:

Worst starting point guard? Naw thats crazy

  28. Celts Fan says:

@Quest – AI gets up his shots, and Ls. As The Man, he’s not good enough to win shit, as a complimentary player, he’s trying to jack up 20 shots a game anyway. give me a solid guy that’ll pace the offense and actually play D and within the team concept. AI’s got boatloads of talent, but it takes more than just talent (Ricky DAvis has a dickload of talent too!) Also, AI IS NOT A POINT GUARD so it doesn’t matter. Not trying to be a hater, dude’s entertaining as hell, but let’s realize what he is.

the All Star PGs should be Harris (starting) and Rondo (a couple weeks ago I said Rose over Rondo, then Rajon went on a tear and I’ve changed my homer mind.)

also, they gotta break up the ballot, cuz it’s awful. vote for PGs, wings (2s and 3s combined) and bigs (4s and 5s.) there’s a HUGE difference between a 2 and a point. to just lump all the guards together is retarded.

  29. JD says:

I agree with Celts fan, Harris should start, Rondo should be on the bench. Deron Williams said this as well to Aol Fanhouse, so I’m going to go with the guy whose actually faced both. Unfortunately, its a popularity contest, so AI’s going to make it, even though he’s made his team worse. Nelson? He’s a good player, but he’s been playing good for about a week now. Harris has been playing excellent all season and Rondo’s been ballin for about a month and a half now. If Nelson keeps this up, maybe he’ll slide in there, but I highly doubt he will.

BTW, I think Rondo’s all star status depends on this X-mas day matchup with the Lakers. Everybody will be watching; if he plays like its Game 6 of the Finals, I think he makes it; if he’s unaggressive, though, he won’t make it to Phoenix.

  30. Ian says:

    quest
ai underrated? lol comon hes overrated people think hes a superstar sure he gets pts but with losses

whoever think jameer is better than calderon and rondo is crazy

  31. imungloloupaw says:

not this year.. in the coming years maybe… though this is definitely not just hype, dude can staight out ball. When i watch orlando play — it seems that at times he’s the second option on a team that has howard, lewis and turk.

  32. Coop says:

    Bx,

He’s NOT better than Calderon or Rondo. I mean that should be obvious. Stop having a memory span of 5 seconds.

He’s better than Alston, Ridnour, Chalmers, Blake (possibly), Watson and possibly Foye. Hardly an all-star.

  33. TruthSpeaks01 says:

woooow im looking at these comments and i see a lot of nonsense. he dismantled the the spurs & lakers in the same week and you guys still think he’s not an all star? get the F outta here. you guys are tools. maybe you should actually watch an orlando game then make a decision. instead of just watching highlights. 17ppg 5ast 1.3stl 53%fg 43%3pt he’s being efficient. coaches and people who are watching the games know what they are seeing. casual bball fans don’t know anything outside of kobe, lebron, and the celtics.

  34. jj says:

WTF!!!…Since when was Calderon so highly rated? He’s a bum, Nelson over Calderon anyday!!!

  35. Celts Fan says:

@Truth – that’d be ok if we were only 2 games into the year, but we’re not so wtf does 2 games count for? He’s a top 5 pg in the east probably, but that’s still not good enough to make an ASG.

  36. BROGDEN says:

In my opinion, he’s an all-star – but not this year. There’s only like one spot left for pg…I doubt he get it. He’s not the worst starting pg, at all. You don’t go from being the best college player to the worst NBA point guard. If I can recall, Orlando’s been in the playoffs damn near every year with him at the helm. So, he’s not the worst pg, but a better question — who actually bears the title of WORST POINT GUARD? Watson.

  37. TruthSpeaks01 says:

    @CELTS

ok your a celts fan so i don’t expect you to watch any games besides celtics but ummmm he’s been balling before the injury and balling AFTER the injury. it’s not like he’s been playing well for JUST 2 games. lol thats an asinine statement. numbers don’t lie. kobe gave him props, popovich gave him props, and duncan gave him props. so why is it hard for you to?

  38. Celts Fan says:

how is being a top 5 pg in the east not giving him his props? dude’s solid. and I watch ANY game on TV. doesn’t mean I’m buying into a guy that plays NO D AT ALL being an All Star when there are better options out there. he’s a solid player, but he’s not an all star.

    East PGs better than him:
    Devin Harris
    Rajon Rondo
    Derrick Rose

The list of guys you could argue may be:
    Jose Calderon
    Andre Miller
    Chris Duhon
Rodney Stuckey (doesn’t have a chance in hell as an All Star, but you’d get about a 50/50 split if you told people they could have either him or Jameer on their team)
    Bibby

(before anyone says it, AI isn’t a PG and Mo Williams is basically a 2 listed as a 1, but LeBron runs their offense, so I don’t count him. We saw in Milwaukee last year how great he handles running a team. no thanks)

and this is your quote “he dismantled the the spurs & lakers in the same week and you guys still think he’s not an all star?”
so that’s where the 2 games part came from. you said that ish yourself man…

again, I like Jameer’s game and watched him TORCH my college team (LaSalle) year in, year out while I was in school. I know how good he is, but he’s not an All Star, sorry.

  39. TruthSpeaks01 says:

dude. he’s been balling since the start of the season. last year he allowed 20ppg he brought that down to 19ppg if you look at your boy rondo’s stats they are fairly comprable. oh well i guess we are just gonna agree to dissagree but there are peeps that are waking up and thinking the same thing that im thinking. he’s playing out of his mind right now and he’s playing at all star level. facts, games, and numbers don’t lie. but hey we are all entiteld to our opinion. :) i can care less if he makes the all star team really but i can gaurantee you he will make any team he plays against pay come playoffs.

  40. TruthSpeaks01 says:

but you can also make the statement that he’s playing on the same level as rondo. why don’t you compare the stats. :)

  41. Celts Fan says:

@Truth – Rondo’s one of the best defensive PGs in the league. Jameer couldn’t guard one of us with handcuffs and a gun. If the #s are close but one guy is an amazing defender and the other one’s awful, it’s pretty clear who’s better.

Deron Williams has weighed in on this too, and he agrees with me…
    http://redsarmy.wordpress.com/2008/12/22/dwill-is-voting-rondo/

  42. BROGDEN says:

WHOA! Wrongness. Jameer is not a lock-down defender but he hardly let’s his guard get a free ticket to the rim. Jameer is VERY tough on ball. However, as we all know, he’s undersized, ya know, SMALL, so the bigger perimeter players with just enough speed POSSIBLY get by him at times. Rondo is part of a defensive strategy focused on HELP. He presses and forces the ball handler to go where the defense wants them to go. It’s not so much a testament to his DEFENSIVE prowess but rather how a very good player, with very LONG arms, EXECUTES the defensive strategy. Just because Rondo might go to the ASG and Jameer probably won’t DOES NOT MEAN WHATSOEVER that Rondo is BETTER. It just doesn’t. That’s faulty logic working right there.

  43. Celts Fan says:

“For starters, Rondo began the night ranked 19th in the league in field goal percentage (.519), the only nonforward or noncenter among the NBA’s top 20. He is second in the NBA in steals and eighth in assists, and he posted his first career triple-double earlier this month.”
    source: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/dailydime?page=dime-081222

adding to that, I’d bet you he’s in the top 2 or 3 rebounding point guards in the game too.

and since both are 4th options on successful teams, yes; it does mean Rondo’s better.

  44. BROGDEN says:

Rondo also has 64% free throw percentage compared to 85%. Rondo is less than a tenth of a percentage point ahead of Jameer on FIELD GOAL percentage. With that said, Rondo makes only a quarter of his 3-pointers. Jameer’s a career 40% behind the line. Bottomline is you can’t utilize stats to differentiate the two. They’re pretty similar. Rondo bricks more free throws and 3-pointers than Jameer. Jameer grabs less boards. Seems like a wash. Anyways, more is asked of Jameer than Rondo. Jameer is the leader of the Magic. Ask anyone of their players. Rondo, crosses his legs and sits Indian style when Scalabrine speaks. Jameer’s more deserving for that ASG spot but Rondo makes a pretty darn good case.

  45. TruthSpeaks01 says:

ok here is a question for everyone on the board. game is on the line. everyone is being guarded and you have a choice of jameer and rondo to take the shot. who would you want to take that shot? uMmMmMmmm i know who i would take.

  46. Nick says:

Half of you guys are stupid as hell. Worst starting PG? Can’t shoot? LOL!!! Watch an NBA game. And yes Calderon is good but Jameer is owning him this year, as he did in the playoffs last year. Caldy’s got assists, but ask Toronto fans and he NEVER breaks down defenses.. he stops at the 3 point line and dishes out to Bosh or 3’s.. Jameer actually pushes the ball and gets defenses to collapse or he shoots. If Turkoglu and Bogans weren’t shooting in the 30% Jameer could easily have 6-7 assists.

  47. Celts Fan says:

@Truth – but that doesn’t matter cuz in both cases, neither would get that shot. On your team, it’d be Dwight (oop of an inbounds if possible) or Hedo or Rashard. On ours it’d be Paul or Ray or KG. AND by the way, Rondo dusted Bibby for a game-clinching lay-up the other night, so it’s not like he can’t do it (and I’m sure Jameer’s hit tons of big/late shots for you guys too. Dude’s got ice water in his blood, saw that for 4 years in college…)

and I didn’t want to utilize stats except to point out that Rondo FILLS UP the stat sheet. He’s setting the pace for a dominant team and is pretty amazing on D. Jameer’s a solid point too, but THE GAME’S PLAYED ON 2 ENDS OF THE FLOOR. like I said, I don’t dislike Jameer’s game but Rondo’s better. Jameer may one day be an All Star, but it’s definitely not this year. We can keep saying the same things over and over in different ways, but it again comes down to their #s are about even but Rondo is MUCH BETTER on D and plays for a better team and they both have similar roles (4th option.) Also, remember that Jameer spent 4 years in college, so this is probably as good as it’s gonna get for him. Rondo’s only 22 and has room to grow (not that that means anything at all for right now, cuz it doesn’t, just saying.) This really isn’t a legit debate right now.

That’s all I’m gonna say on this except that I do like Jameer and hope he’s an All Star (w/ Rondo) one day. Seems like a good guy and he is a nice player.

  48. xavi says:

he can not be an allstar cos he is a guard but can not give good pas, only shot and drive, this performance not enough for allstar

  49. BROGDEN says:

    ATTA BOY!

  50. truthspeaks01 says:

Celts fan do u like apples???? how about those apples?? Lol jameer an allstar. Who knew? I think I did.
