Is Rajon Rondo An All-Star?
Is Rondo an All-Star?In case you’ve been out of the country, the Celtics are 17-2 and have been winning with ease. While surely the Big Three of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen have been holding their own, the glue to this squad has been Rajon Rondo.
On the season Rondo is averaging 9.8 points, 7.2 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game, and has had a couple nice performances of late – 16 points, 12 assists and four rebounds during the Celtics’ win over the Magic on Monday and 22 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in a win over the Warriors last week.
Rondo has been a great source for assists and especially steals, and although he doesn’t score a ton of points, even though Doc Rivers has told him to shoot more, his shooting percentage is fantastic for a point guard at 51%.
This is what Celtics blog Perkisabeast has to say:
While in a ponderous mood last night, the thought occurred to me, ‘who in the east is better than Rajon Rondo at the point?’ This thought sent me searching the interwebs for answers and the answer I got was, well, nobody. Further, with his inspired play of late, shouldn’t Rajon be a major contender for an All-Star berth.
What do you think? Is Rondo an All-Star?

Harris as of late, and Calderon is pretty good too.and just to be honest its crazy but Rose may just be more talented all ready. And dont forget mo williams.
what makes Rondo great is he meshes so well with the big 3 and is great with them. talent wise id says theres a few guys over him.

Seriously wouldnt even be a discussion if people from Boston werent crazy, would we be discussing anyone else avg 10 pts and 7 assists as an all-star? Get real.

Hell no!
You have Harris carving everyone up, Jose who is a beast, AI who is more a 2 than a 1, Rodney Stuckey, Andre Miller, Mo Williams, and hell you could make a case for Duhon if we are basing it off a one game performance who are all above Rondo IMO for All-Star bids.
Read Andrew’s article from yesterday about the Worst “Inside” Shooters. Rondo was shooting 17.8% in 2-point range if it wasn’t a dunk or layup. That’s horrible.
What’s your fascination with Rondo, Aron? Get off the dudes nuts! Just cause the dude was the PG on their team last year doesn’t mean ‘ish. Hell 90% of us in this comment board could have led that team to a championship. The Big 3 won that trophy NOT Rondo!
Rondo is like Brad Johnson of the NFL. Just cause he won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Bucs doesn’t automatically put him up there with Peyton Manning or Tom Brady! Rondo is NO All-Star!
Don’t disrespect the game OR the point guard position.

Jryu…good find. Dime really shouldn’t be plagiarizing other sites material. I’m sure you guys can think for yourself, and if you did you would realize that Rondo is no where near an all star. There are at least 3 pgs in the east (Harris, Caldy, and Rose) who are all better than Rondo. He’s quick and can get to the basket, but he makes stupid mistakes and can’t shoot the ball at all.

Plug Calderon in with the celtics… Great team
Shit plug in Andre Miller with the celtics.. Great team
He has done good to give them a spark which is what they need because the vets are old and have been eating cake all summer.. if anything he is a energy player but no energy players ever get into the all star game..

Personally the only thing i like about Rondo is that he is a tall PG.. other than that he has no real offensive game.. He was supposed to be workin on his jumper since 2 summers ago and it still has not improved..
And when he goes running fearlessly into the paint, half the foul calls he gets, he initiates contact.. and its cuz he rides that Celtic reputation sky high..
But he is a decent defender.. YIPPPITY DOOOOOO

December 2nd, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Mikey says:
The way the All-Star game is set up, they don’t differentiate between point guards and shooting guards. So, for five or six spots, you have the likes of: Rajon Rando, Derrick Rose, Mo Williams, Devin Harris, Jose Calderon, Vince Carter, Ray Allen, Andre Miller, Andre Igoudala, Joe Johnson, Allen Iverson, Rip Hamilton, etc.
I don’t think Rando is high enough on that list to be an All-Star.
December 2nd, 2008 at 2:17 pm

The difference between most of the PG mentioned is defense. Rondo actually plays defense. Rondo should be at the top or near it for that reason alone.

Nah, as of today, the 12-man East should be:
PG: Calderon, Harris
SG: Wade, Joe Johnson
SF: Lebron, Pierce, Granger
PF: Bosh, KG
C: Dwight, Brand
With the last spot coming down to AI, Butler, Jamison, Josh Smith (if he comes back STRONG from that injury), maybe Redd, and MAYBE Rondo.

As an avowed Celtics fan/Rajon-lover, I certainly enjoy the hype he’s starting to get. However, I think the right answer is maybe someday, but not quite yet. He’s been putting on a clinic lately, and weirdly enough, the Celtics could afford to lose any of the big 3 more than Rondo.
Derrick Rose is a hands-down all-star right now, Harris might be if he keeps it up, and Calderon is a good candidate as well. That said, when its all said and done, Rajon will have at least one all-star appearance on his resume…

My thing about comparing players:
Put Calderon, Harris or Rose on that stacked Celtics team.
Put Rondo on the Raps, Nets or Bulls.
Is Rando even mentioned as an All-Star candidate? Nope.
Not hating, I just dont think its fair to guys like Calderon, Harris and Rose to put Rondo ahead of them. And it especially wouldnt be fair to a guy like Joe Johnson.
December 2nd, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Kudabeen says:
I love defense so I’d roll with Rondo as my favorite PG right now…Watching him control the floor no matter if the big three was in or not is great to watch. His court vision does not get as much pub as it should. He clearly is moving faster mentally and physically then everyone else on the floor. He is hitting more shots. I was watching him the past three games just harass ball handlers. Did anyone see Anthony Johnson was visibly frustrated and Rondo wasn’t hacking or being physical he just had him locked…
Devin Harris is having a great year and Jose is as well…Their numbers on lesser teams will get them considered for sure, but pound for pound I’ll think Rondo is the best all around PG in the East, while CP3 is the best in the League….

p dizzle: did you really say Rodney Stucky, Andre miller and Mo Will?? are you freaking retarded? no that is not even a question, you are retarded

The East All-Star PGs are: AI, Harris and Calderon.
But I value Stuckey, Williams and Miller higher than I do Rondo. Rondo is a bum, and is so ever-hyped it’s ridiculous. Like it’s been mentioned throw Rondo on any other team and he’s a nobody and is playing ball for the Dynamo or some other overseas team.

I wouldn’t be so sure that “any other player” would fit in with the Celtics. He’s a nice complement to everyone else there, plays defense like the rest of them. He’s almost scared to shoot anything other than a layup, which is a good thing with so many offensive talents.
All star? probably not. But he can start on my team any day.

Now we know most of you don’t actually watch basketball, preferring the numbness of the mathematical picture to fill in what your eyes can’t recognize – considering this, we feel that half of the game is played on the defensive end and the closest Jose is going to get to Rondo is at his local Suzuki dealer. AI isn’t a point guard and that nonsense should have ended a long time ago. Rose is too green and Harris, well, Harris should make the team with Rondo. Stats are fine for proving someone’s deficiencies, but when it comes to shooting 51% form the floor, all the arguments keep ignoring the facts

all this talk is like awards given by writers and broadcasters, they only look at numbers to give awards, and only a few numbers at that. i think the only other better PG in the east is Harris. so rondo cant shoot, he doesnt need to know how to shoot.
you know who else cant shoot? Jason Kidd, and i think he has plenty of all star appearances. you know who else cant shoot? dwayne wade. you know who else couldnt shoot? Dr. J. you know who else couldnt shoot? Magic Johnson. you know who else couldnt shoot, at least until his body started to fail him? MICHEAL JORDAN. you shouldnt have to be able to shoot to be an all star, which apparently is all anyone cares about.
why dont we just put the top 25 scorers in the NBA on the all star teams? that would make the fair weather fans happy.
rondo is by far the best rebounding PG in the league, and one of the best defensive PGs in the league. Keep in mind that those two areas of the game have nothing to do with the Big 3. AND assists are up to the PG to get. If he cant find the right guys in the right places hes not going to get any assists.
and that stat line for the triple double, tell me anyone besides jason kidd and lebron that can go for stats like that.
Is he an all star? since you have to pick guards, theres no way hes getting past wade, johnson, AI, Butler, etc. But for sheer talent and effectiveness, i would love to have rondo on my team.

Ummmm I love how most of you clearly haven’t been watching rondo this season. Seeing him absolutely destroy every other point guard this year should be an indicator that something is wrong with this “Hell No” BS. Seriously, next couple years he will become the best PG in the league. I think it’s just incredible how everyone hates the celtics so much. Calderon looked just silly on defense and offense against Rondo. Did you miss that? Iverson was basically shut down by him, you know, when Rondo didn’t steal the ball. Why don’t you watch a game or two before wasting your time online to hate something just because you are another teams fan.

11 (10.9) PPG, 7.4 A per game, a threat to have the most SPG, and 5 RPG.

To go along with the 11 PPG he has a 51% field goal percentage and is improving almost everytime I watch him.

Wow, I see a lot of hate on here for Rondo… and it’s obvious that the greater majority of it is coming from avid supporters of Calderon and Andre Miller. First of all, Rondo is younger, quicker, and plays better defense than either of the aforementioned players… His confidence is steadily raising, and flat out, he IS the most efficient point guard in the league… as far as being a complete package is concerned. Let me ask y’all this… what other point guard is capable of pulling down as many rebounds, assists, steals, and points… per game… in the capacity that Rondo has done? If any, the company is surely elite… And when folks like Miller and Calderon are put out to pasture…. Rondo still will not have reached the peak of his potential…. so suck on that…

first lets consider this…all star voting goes by the entire guard position…not specifically pg or sg. That way…you dont need andre miller or rajon rondo or jose calderon or devin harris. It could go wade and ray allen. Wade is a definate lock to start and it looks like iverson will be with him, even though he hasn’t played like an all star. In all honestly, the second starting guard should be devin harris or even more deserved, joe johnson. However, johnson is getting less votes than Gilbert arenas. I feel that the popular voting for all star teams should be done away with, as evident with yi jianlian.

I have watched Rondo since his days in Kentucky and have followed his career with the celtics. These past 3 years have showed that Rondo has improved by leaps and bounds. This season he has been consistent in almost all aspects of the game with one exception, life at the charity stripe has proven difficult, but he will improve there as well. He has more on the court awareness than any point gaurd in the league and at times reminds me of Larry Bird’s court savy and yes Tommy Heinson compares him to Bob Cousey, I grew up in kentucky , home of the best college program and now live near boston, home of the best pro baskeball team and rondo fits perfectly with all of the great players that have worn the celtic green.
