J.J. Barea’s Time In The Spotlight

I’ve been watching Jose Juan Barea since his time at Northeastern, and I’ve always been a fan. The 6-foot Puerto Rican point guard plays hard, sometimes plays dirty, but is always a threat out on the floor.

Although Barea’s spot in the new “Three J’s” for the Mavericks alongside Jason Kidd and Jason Terry will most likely be short-lived, he’s loving every second of it.

“I just like to be out there,” Barea said. “J-Ho needs to get back so I can come off the bench again.” Barea is averaging 20 points and four assists in two consecutive starts with both Howard and Antoine Wright sidelined.

After writing them off, Dallas has won nine of their last 10 games and is back in the mix of the Western Conference playoff hunt.

While I was surprised to see him still on the roster during the preseason, do you think Barea has a spot in this League?

A lot of newbies making something outta nothing for themselves this season. If he wasn’t on the radar before, means that he didn’t have enough to crack the rotation on his own team. If he’s shining in the rotation now, especially after J-Ho goes down…it’s because teams don’t have any scouting notes on him. Give him a couple more weeks, then his 15 minutes are up.

  2. QuEsT??? says:

yea, he does. There was an article done on him by a PuertoRican Newspaper and it said that part of the reason why they let devin harris go, was because of him. When JKidd retires, he will be the mav’s point guard of the future.

  3. JCARR says:

With the way he is playing… yeah. He’s just a good back up though… not sold on him starting or having such a big role. If he were in any other team, no one would know who he is.

  4. that's whats up says:

Beno Udrih was a good backup too.

Think the Kings will retire his jersey in the next few years?

  5. QuEsT??? says:

yall have clearly not seen him play in college, nor in the professional league he played in before coming to the nba nor in international play. This is not the first time he does this, last season he started a few games and had a 25 points 10 assits game and when he played significant minutes he cracked at least 10 points. Ask Dirk, barea lit germany up in the pre olympics

  6. Richard Wellner says:

    Northeastern is a prissy school.

  7. Mamba says:

He is tenacious – have watched several of his games, always refreshing to see a dude come out with that much energy

  8. dagwaller says:

I’ve always liked him. I don’t see why he couldn’t hang on with the Mavs – he’s better than Antoine Wright. If Earl Boykins played for a bunch of teams, there’s no reason JJ can’t.

  9. Mark says:

fallinup, somehow I doubt scouting reports are non-comprehensive. If you’re scouts analyze ‘Dirk’ and not the rest of the team, you deserve to be fired. NBA Live/2k does a better job than that.

Hopefully that afore posted PETA scout is not the offender, because that would make many people on the Dime boards very sad. With that said, go Juan Jose!

Ive been watching him for some time in both dynasty leagues Im in… Sure bury him back on the bench. But when Dallas starts losing again they might have to dust him off and sit down one their bums that dont get the fire burning.

  11. bigJack says:

Dallas by going without jHo & antoine wright are looking good again. A lil while ago the Mavs were written off as too soft and they’re darlings of the L again.

Winning fixes everything, toughness, chemistry etc… Raps need some wins.

  12. fallinup (What Would Charles Oakley Do?) says:

C’mon now. This guy’s been in the league 3 years now. I’m sure that in these 3 years, teams don’t sit through films of Barea the night before or run drills on how to stop every friggin one on the bench. You come with a game plan, and this past week and a half…I’m sure “Stop Barea” was not underlined on the team board. Teams will get his number, and know how Dallas runs with him in the lineup. That’s why Anthony Morrow isn’t lighting up teams still…or why Flip Murray isn’t an Allstar.

“You can put a cat in the oven, but it doesn’t make it a biscuit.” – Sydney Dean

We’ll come down…if he cracks the line up..more power to him, but he’ll come down.

  13. Diego says:

Hell, yeah. I agree with some of the posts above.

Aron, no doubt he made the team this year, as he was on it last year and I too saw him light it up last year a couple of times when he got the playing time, and I wondered why he didn’t get more tick then.

  14. rob stewart says:

He looks like the next great Matt Maloney

  15. YOMOMMA says:

If Mugsy Bogues (5′3) could do it, why can’t he? Hell YEA! Go JJ !
