First, KG went after Jose Calderon in the backcourt doing his best Dikembe Mutombo impression. Then he made Big Baby cry in the Portland game.
But that’s not it. KG’s intimidation tactics didn’t go over too well with Jerryd Bayless either, as he basically crawled up to him in the backcourt, and taunted him again a couple of plays later.

Nobody looks at the fact that his team is 20-2, or that he is averaging 16 and 9 as the third scoring option on his team, or that he is the best defensive player on one of the best defensive teams in the league. Why do people care about what this man says on the basketball court, or who he says it to? KG has been doing this for years. The only difference between this year and the previous ones is that you all just NOTICE it a lot more.
Basketball is not merely a physical basketball game; there are a lot of mind games that come into play, and KG is doing his best to exploit them. Whether or not Bayless or Calderon or anyone else publicly displays the ill effects of KG’s tactics (and they shouldn’t publicly display them; good for them), the ill effects are being felt. KG causes frstration both with his play (which is great) and with his antics, and there is nothing wrong with what he is doing.
(PS. He isn’t doing it for physical intimidation, i.e. to make people cower from him. This is basketball, and the players realize that this is a part of the game. That’s why nobody, including KG, starts swinging. Just words, nothing else. KG does it in order to get into the other team’s head regarding their play. This isn’t a fight, so stop treating it as such with words like pussy and bitch and punk and bully. Relax. It’s basketball.)
Other players say mad shit during the game. It happens all the time. Rip and Billups used to talk mad shit to people. People say mad shit to Kobe, and he responds. Shaq, Jordan, Barkley, Rodman… they all talked during the game. How often do people get T’d up for talking? Barely ever. Why should KG be treated differently? I think the real question is why do you all think KG should be treated differently? Maybe it’s because you have a bias against the city of Boston. Ok, fair enough. But, if you think he should be treated differently than other players before him who have done similar shit because either 1) he is a member of the reigning NBA Champs or 2) you just don’t like him (whatever that means), then you are just being a hater.

Maurice Lucas said in the oregonian the other day that “nobody talked trash like that back in his day,(the seventies) but back then the fine for punching a guy in the mouth was only fifty bucks”. 1)I don’t always like some of the stuff he does. But the idea that KG is some out of control bully is silly. Dime is really heading the bandwagon on this one.

And then the second part of the clip, where they sort of bump after Perkins swatted Bayless? C’mon. There’s nothing there that doesn’t happen 5 times a week in the NBA. Again, if you want to read something into it, I’m sure you can, but it was a non-event. KG’s pumped that Bayless got called for double dribble (and swatted), and he’s walking over to Perkins as much as Bayless. He’s not even looking at Bayless and when Bayless inituates the bump, he raises his hands like “Whatever, get by” and doesn’t even turn his head. Not exactly getting in his face. I’m not a lipreader, so maybe he was talking smack on the way by, but if THIS is what passes as evidence of taunting or “intimidation tactics,” I think it’s a weak argument. Compared to how KG was actually getting in Calderon’s face.
3. Those who say KG’s behavior started with winning the ring last year are ignorant. This doesn’t mean a person can’t criticize his behavior, but saying that it started recently or because the ring went to his head or whatever is silly. The evidence of KG’s longstanding reputation as a trashtalker is all over the web. And the “KG’s a bully cuz he only goes after small guys” is equally silly. It’s just more noticeable now because the Celts are champs. If KG ever swatted the ball out of Luke Ridenour’s hands after the whistle like he did to Amare, half these people would go into a seizure just hating on him for “only picking on little guys.” And Dime would be all over it, of course

Granted, I’m a KG fan, and I’ll admit there’s a double standard, because other folks (Artest and Rasheed) would get Ts for the shit he’s doing, but who cares??? I understand people saying he should chill, and maybe he should, but until refs start giving him Ts, he’s gonna keep on doing it.
The last time I checked, the point guard is the floor leader (with the exception of Kobe, Wade, and a few others). If KG can get in their head, and make them start doin’ shit they don’t normally do, then that helps the Celtics. Once the floor leader gets rattled, the rest of the team is in trouble. I’m all for it.
