NBA Trade Rumor: Boris Diaw For Eddy Curry
When Andrew wrote about the possibility of Charlotte shipping Boris Diaw to New York last Friday, his take was that the deal was pure speculation, while agreeing it would make sense. Today, reports out of New York are that the Knicks and Mike D’Antoni are very much interested in acquiring Diaw and/or Raja Bell, and because of the timeliness of last week’s trade, they have the opportunity to do so before the trading deadline on February 19.
“A person with knowledge of the Suns-Bobcats trade said the deal was accomplished in time to allow both players to be trade-eligible by the deadline. NBA rules say traded players cannot be moved again for 60 days. The deal was done Dec. 10, which means they can be traded again Feb. 9.”
Eddy Curry’s name has been linked to the Bobcats all season, beginning with discussions of his arrival as part of a three-team trade that would have sent Curry and David Lee to Charlotte, Al Harrington and Marco Belinelli to New York and Gerald Wallace to Golden State.
While a source claims “the Bobcats have maintained interest in Eddy Curry” throughout, the deal would also work salary-wise and would “save the Knicks $2.2 million in cap space for 2010.”
Would you make this deal?

That is a horrible picture. An amazingly ugly picture of a mildly ugly guy.
Any GM trading for Ecity has to sign a disclosure acknowledging they know full well that they will probably have city and/or state wide pizza and doughnut shortages.

Eddy Curry’s weight is double the average NBA player so its a fair deal.

Straight up, the money works for Curry and Diaw but essentially, The Cats would have traded JRich for Raja Bell and a no playing Eddy Curry. That doesn’t smell legit. And I hope MJ isn’t that goddamn stupid.

why the hell would larry brown want eddy curry back?
that shit don’t make no sense.
and why does mike d’antoni have a love affair with boris diaw?…that bitch sucks.
dumb ass trade involving a bunch of nba bums. and dumb ass coaches. why not also trade larry brown for mike d’antoni?

I don’t think this trade is all that smart. Boris Diaw isn’t a center & if the Knicks are going to get rid of Eddy Curry, they should try to get a guy who’s at least tall enough to guard PFs & Cs. Larry Brown plays a traditional game, so Eddy would definitely see touches in that system. Wouldn’t surprise me if the deal went through, but I’m kinda hoping it doesn’t.

I didn’t know you had to wait 60 days to trade a player again after already being traded. What happened to this rule when Sheed was traded to ATL and then to Detroit within just a couple of days?

If they are traded 1 for 1, that trade can be made today. The 60 day rule only applies if Diaw is traded with another player.

For Rob Stewart, this is why Rasheed was able to be traded only a few days after Atlanta acquired him.

Hell yeah.
Diaw is a wonderful talent and could return to his old form under Mike D.
Curry is a ugly, fat slob with a monstruous contract.
I’d do it in a heartbeat, if I were Mr.Knick Sir.

Eddy Curry had his best season under Larry Brown. He & Okafor are made for each other. One luvs getting the ball the other seems to hate it.

fallinup says:
Chas,
That rule applies to the Diaw and Curry scenario. But the trade that brought Sheed to Detroit was a 3 way trade between Boston, ATL, and Det. Detroit also got Mike James from Boston when they got Sheed.
With Sheed’s case, there was some sort of loophole where the team trading for had to take on more salary that what they were trading. Hence why Boston had to be involved.
Something like that from what I recall.

Diaw can be traded today if traded alone. It is explained at the link I provided early. Larry Coon’s Salary Cap FAQ is the best resource for NBA salary cap issues.
Rasheed was traded from Portland to Atlanta, played one game, then traded to Detroit as part of a three-way trade also including the Celtics. The Celtics were compensated with a draft pick to take on Chucky Atkins salary so Detroit could land Sheed.
However, Wallace was still traded twice in a week. This was legal because he was traded by himself (ie Atlanta didn’t send out any other players).
Here’s the trade story from ESPN, although it does not explain the loophole.

NYNIKZ says:
…isn’t Diaw sign thru 2011 for $9 million per?
The fact that we dumped Zach Randolph SHOULD hopefully mean this will never happen. Diaw just isn’t that good, and Curry has a better chance of opting out than we do using Diaw to lure free agents.

heartbreaker85 says:
larry brown is a traditional coach. his point guard should pass. his sg shoots, his sf does the intangibles, his pf rebounds and his c scores from time to time. that’s why eddy curry might get his confidence back. he can score with the best of ‘em bigs, he can’t run with them, he can’t rebound or defend, but he can score.
diaw will give the knicks a versatile wing, sliding q back to sg. problem is, it would displace promising wilson chandler.

I think this trade works… people forget that Curry was borderline all-star with the bulls, averaged close to 20ppg… pair him with the rugged, defensive minded Okafor, and things may just work out… on the other end, Diaw would work in D’Antoni’s system for obvious reasons

karizmatic says:
It works great for New York, but what’s in to for Charlotte. I actually think Diaw could fit in well in Charlotte and unless they are getting a guy like David Lee it makes no sense. So if I’m New York I love it, if I’m Charlotte, no way.
December 19th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
Jason says:
I think it makes perfect sense for both teams. Eddy Curry played his best balance game under Brown. Curry is a dominant scoring big man and would compliment Okafor who is a dominate defender but not a consistent scorer.
