Scouting Stephen Curry

Stephen CurrySteph Curry

First, Loyola (Md.) decided to chase Stephen Curry around the court with two guys at all times. At the Garden against West Virginia tonight, Bob Huggins is trying to neutralize the junior sensation by sticking a litany of athletic forwards on him – 6-9 freshman Devin Ebanks, 6-7 junior Da’Sean Butler, and 6-7 junior Wellington Smith have all had time checking him.

* Truth is, he’s a better shooter with people in his grill. It’s almost like he locks in on the rim when he’s got to look through someone’s outstretched hand. He pulled back an 18-footer fall-away jumper with Smith hanging on him and it dropped right through. But when open – on the wing or in the corner – he’s bricked a bunch of shots.

* He doesn’t work particularly hard off the ball to get himself open. Instead of running his man through the hamster wheel to wear him out and get a clean look at the bucket, Steph jogs through the offense pretty nonchalantly.

* He’s a much better passer than people realize. With every pair of Mountaineer eyes locked on him, Curry smartly up-faked his man and found a passing lane into the paint or to the other side of the floor where a teammate was wide open. He tallied eight assists in the first half.

* But make no bones about it, he is not a point guard. Even if he’s got good court vision, there is no drive-and-dish in his game. Every one of his eight assists have come on sharp passes because the defense is so keen on stopping him. That obviously won’t be the case in the League.

* Davidson runs a lot of pick and roll, and Curry is pretty good at navigating double teams. Though he definitely doesn’t have NBA-caliber speed to get around a second defender, he’s quite familiar with the set.

Good scouting… i see Curry having an Eric Gordon year his first year in the league. Ocassional outings of 20 points or more and other nights when his absence isnt even felt.

he needs to get faster and cardio up if he is gonna make it in the L

  4. Joaquin says:

Does he handle the ball to create? Last thing you’d want to have is another Redick type who just lives from running around screens.

Might just be like Ben Gordon, small but takes the big shot. However BG looks more built than Curry.

  5. mr K1X says:

he has to figure out a way to get his weight up and keep his shot the same. i love his game but he is not an a.i. type finisher and he dosent have that wirey strength to take the play by play contact.

  6. Big Sneezy says:

He most reminds me of Kevin Martin. At least, he kinda has the same build. Martin maybe has a bit more ability to create and get some of those mid-range jumpers off the dribble. Not sure if Curry has that ability.

tell ESPN to stop stalking his mom

  8. baron von faulk says:

man he has a cat-quick trigger no doubt

  9. Big Shot BoB says:

I think he’ll be fine as a scoring point in the league. He isn’t showing he can dish the rock right now because he’s not being asked to. He has no one to pass to so his job is to carry the load offensively.

  10. doc says:

I know one thing,in college he is the SHIT.As long as his will is strong, speed and size wont matter.
