Six NCAA Players to Watch
Curtis Jerrells (photo. Baylor)Who to keep an eye on in the college game this week…
1. Curtis Jerrells, G, Baylor — The smallest triple-double threat in the country stands just 6-1, but last night he racked up 17 points, 11 boards and 10 assists in a win over Hartford. That was two days after dumping 29 points, seven rebounds and seven dimes on Texas-Arlington. The senior Jerrells is averaging 17-5-4 across the board for the 21st-ranked Bears, and NBADraft.net has him projected as a late-first round pick.
2. Tyreke Evans, G, Memphis — While his 2-for-9, six-turnover effort against Syracuse on Saturday prompted one of the Dime crew to e-mail, “Tyreke is playing himself out of any chance to get paid to play in the United States,” don’t think the pro scouts have written off the freshman star. He scored 20 in Memphis’ win over Drexel last night, bumping his season averages to 15.4 points and 2.5 steals. Tyreke has been inconsistent and his jumper has suffered (39% FG), one reason why most draft analysts predict he’ll stay in school for his sophomore year.
3. Seth Curry, G, Liberty — Stephen’s little brother dropped 30 last night on Northern Colorado on 14-for-21 shooting and four triples. The 6-1 freshman, a high school all-state performer in North Carolina, is averaging 20.5 points a night, and his resume includes a 26-point showing at Virginia and a 24-point effort at Clemson.
B.J. Mullens (photo. Tim Tadder)4. B.J. Mullens, C, Ohio State — Once upon a time, Mullens was projected to go #1 overall in next year’s draft, following in Greg Oden and Kosta Koufos’ one-and-done OSU footsteps. But with Mullens starting off the season as a backup, he’s been surpassed by Blake Griffin for the top spot, among others. (Most mocks still have Mullens in the Top-5 for ‘09.) Last night, in what would have been a high-profile matchup with UNC-Asheville’s 7-foot-Forever Kenny George, Mullens had his best collegiate game to date, posting 19 points, eight rebounds and three blocks in his second start.
5. DeShawn Sims, C, Michigan — Despite beating UCLA (neutral site) and Duke (home) while both were ranked in the Top-4, Michigan is only ranked 24th in the country; their only two losses coming to Duke (neutral) and at Maryland. Sophomore guard Manny Harris is the first name on the marquee, but UM’s MVP might be the junior big man Sims. Last night he put up 20 points and 20 rebounds against Florida-Gulf Coast, his fourth double-double of the year and third where he scored at least 20 points. Although at 6-8, he’s seen as a second-round NBA pick at best.
6. Jodie Meeks, G, Kentucky — I can’t remember a UK guard getting buckets like this since Tony Delk’s heyday. After scorching Appalachian State for 46 points (nine threes) over the weekend, Meeks hit Tennessee State for 32 points (eight threes) last night. Meeks’ 24.7-ppg average has him in the top five nationally, and through 12 games has already surpassed his entire point total from his freshman year. His name hasn’t popped up on any mock drafts yet, but check back after a few more monster stat lines.

I remember watching C.J. Jerrells in the 4a-5a TABC All-State game. Him Abrams, and Dugat were on the floor at the same time… Crazy how they all flew under the radar, now they’re a name that’s on NBA scouts minds.
