The Conspiracy Theorist
LeBron James (photo. Mannion)I don’t think I’m too much of a conspiracy theorist. While I wholeheartedly believe O.J. Simpson is currently sitting in prison due to a law enforcement vendetta that dates back to the 1990s and not for whatever kidnapping/robbery supposedly happened in Vegas last year, and I was ready for whatever shadiness that could have happened during Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, I’m not as bad as some other people I know.
That said, I have come up with or believed in an NBA-related conspiracy theory here and there. If nothing else, stories like Kwame Brown’s real attachment to Michael Jordan, or David Stern rigging the ‘85 Lottery in the Knicks’ favor are fun to talk about and pick apart. And some aren’t so fun, like the idea that the current OKC Thunder ownership intentionally sabotaged the team and tried to alienate the Seattle fan base to make the OKC relocation easier. But that’s not so much theory as a pretty obvious fact.
Anyway, when today’s Smack comments section turned into a debate over how Mike Brown would far as the Cavs’ coach without LeBron, it reminded me of one of my great conspiracy swing-and-misses:
Going into the ‘06-07 season, my theory was that sometime around Thanksgiving, LeBron was going to suffer a season-ending “injury,” something that wouldn’t necessarily effect him long-term, like a “broken bone.” Naturally, the Cavs would be atrocious with ‘Bron, opening the door for them to land the top spot in the draft. That year’s prize: Greg Oden. LeBron gets his franchise big man, Oden is comfortable staying in the Midwest in a situation where he can relax in the background while ‘Bron gets all the attention, and everyone outside of New York, New Jersey and Nike is happy as the championships start rolling in and LeBron carries the League for the next 15-whatever years, turning Cleveland into a major sports market in the process.
Of course, LeBron led the Cavs to the Finals that year. Guess I was wrong.
What NBA conspiracy theories have you come up with in the past, or believed to be true that you heard somewhere else?

there are too many holes in your misbelief for it to even come close to qualifying as a conspiracy theory.

lebron hurt out for season; cavs in the lottery; greg oden declaring for draft; cavs winning the lottery; cavs taking greg oden (over durant) etc….

Second, yes, police do cooperate state to state but do you really believe LVPD called LAPD and said “O.J.’s here. Do you want us to arrest him and convict him on some false robbery and kidnapping charges??”

Re: LeBron/Oden
Everyone knew Oden was leaving. If he could have gone pro after high school, he would have. David Robinson didn’t really have an injury history that I can remember, nor did Michael Jordan before he broke his foot and missed most of his 2nd year. Rigging the Lottery would be the easiest part of the whole thing.
Re: OJ
I don’t feel sorry for OJ. Honestly, I believe if he didn’t commit the Brown/Goldman murders himself, he was there when they were killed and he knows/hired whoever did it. And I don’t like how he’d shunned the Black community pre-trial, but as soon as he was in trouble, wanted acceptance back in. That said, I don’t think anyone else in this world would get the extent of the sentence he got for what he was convicted of. What other case would EVERY OTHER co-defendant except maybe one be offered a deal to testify against the ringleader of a one-time non-major crime? And if you don’t think cops in other states pay attention and stick up for other cops, you’re simply naive.

First conspiracy theory – The rapper “tha Game” has fake facial/body tatoos. This is evidenced by the fact that he plays the forward position for the atlanta hawks under his unassuming alter ego “Josh Smith”.
Theory Two – There are more refs on the take, the NBA knows enough about it to realize they havent got it entirely figured out yet. So in the interest of protecting their brand/sport they have shut the whole debate down in the popular media and behind the scenes they are monitoring and investigating in order to safely and discretely purge dirty refs. This is evidenced by their inaction on the repeated phone calls fellow referees paid to and from Donaghy around the time of his illegal activities – especially calls in proximity to game times.
December 18th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
M dizzle says:
Theory three – Jay Z and Lebron have been involved i discussions behind the scenes about his pending free agency/move to the nets in 09. As a smoke screen they are laying low in press on the issue while promoting their stadium agenda. Meanwhile Knicks ownership and every other team with a pipe dream is happy to express their desires to get ‘Bron in the media, further allowing the Nets to “sit back in the shadows”. Also ‘Bron wont be winning a title in Cleveland – agreed upon by all parties involved as a part of these dicussions with Hov’ because …
1. that would effectivley make him the ‘teamwrecker’ of a potential dynasty should he decide to get out of town anyway when 09 arrives
2. Cleveland limits his “jordan/tiget woods – like” iconic business and legacy potential as a market and venue to the world both in terms of athletics and as a brand. Cleveland knows this, Bron knows this, Jay Z damn well knows this. Only the Knicks have a remote chance other than the Nets and thats because they are also situated in NY and are willing to grossly outbid even themselves for free agents (plus they play in storied MSG which is icing on the “legacy” cake).

@ Steve A,
Let me say this first off: I think OJ did it! And if he didn’t kill them, he sure as hell paid someone to do it! That said, what just went down with OJ is typical bullshit that happens everyday in or fucked up judicial system. Look, I don’t give two frog nuts right now, one way or the other, if he did kill Nicole and her friend. What I do know is that he received his due process and a jury cleared him of all charges. That means, whether he actually did it or not, he was found not guilty and CAN’T be tried for that shit again. In any case, I am sure as hell that he isn’t the first cat to get away with something because a jury was too scared, too dumb, or too uninformed to make the right decision. But hey, this is America, the law is the fucking law. But when people do the type of stuff that just happened in Las Vegas 9getting payback for a 15 year old crime), then the system that is supposed to work gets undermined. Look, I am not saying that the system is perfect (because it ain’t) but I do admit that a lot of the mistakes that do happen do tend to be accidental… despite following judicial procedure. That type of “accidental” acquittal of a murderer, while unfortunate, was arrived at fairly according to the law. That travesty that just went down with OJ makes me afraid to ever be accused of anything in this country because it makes me think that I still don’t have a fair chance even with a jury. How the hell does he get that type of sentence for that type of crime? I know cats that have killed (and tried to kill) people that have served significantly less time. I know a few people that got probation for manslaughter, but OJ gets 30 years? Regardless of what you believe, having the justice system get payback on people creeps me the fuck out and makes me even more untrustworthy of the people in the country who are supposed to be in charge of not only carrying out justice, but playing by the rules; their deception undermines our way of life. I mean, let’s face it… if the people charged with keeping the law ain’t going to follow the laws, then why the fuck should any of us?!

I said in my previous post that yes, I know police cooperate with and stick up for each each other. But you have to have someone going against you to need to be stuck up for. What police were under attack? The LAPD? LVPD? By whom? O.J.?
Bottom line is this:
O.J. Put himself in a position to be a arrested, charged with crimes, and tried and convicted on those charges.
I don’t doubt there’s some get back here. But O.J. Handed them the case.
As far as his sentence, its a MAXIMUM of 33 years. And I believe a minimum of 7. Rarely does anyone other than serious or repeat offenders do their maximum sentence.
December 18th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
Austin Burton says:
@Gomez — OJ embarrassed the LAPD, and law enforcement in general, when you consider that the case seemed like a slam-dunk and they lost. That’s the reason for the payback.
And I hate to bring a fictional show like “Law & Order” into this, but since it’s probably the one example almost all of us have seen, you’ve seen the cops/DA’s on there take on a “We’re not letting this guy get away again” mentality. That show is fake, but that mentality is real.

I wont believe its not untill they show us the lottery as its happening, not in some backroom with a bunch of executives selling the pick to the highest bidder and tell us the public 45 min later. also think Jordan was totally shady, the retirement thing, the calls he got, and his dad being murdered. and of course the refs are crooked as fucked, while I am a hard core laker fan, I can see that the NBA fucked over the blazers and the kings during the western conference finals both those years. seriously who would want to watch the Blazers vs. the Pacers or the kings vs. the nets in the finals? everyone wanted to see the laker dynasty win. also think national televised games are always fixed, have to make it more exciting for the country right? no matter how bad the calls are. think Im a conspiracy theorist yet? haha

I’ll agree that OJ’s jail sentence has the tinge of fishiness. He might’ve done it this time, but it’s not coincidence that his right to appeal has been blocked, nobody else got a sentence, and that the law & media’s trying to sweep the discrepencies (ignored evidence, non- minority jury, etc.) that’s hiding in plain sight quick as hell. My NBA conspiracies are:
1) Larry Johnson’s shady 4 pt. play
2) Alonzo Mourning’s suspension that he got when the Heat played the Knicks in the 98 Playoffs. Larry Johnson just attacked him and Zo got put out and the Heat lost the series. Had that bullshit not happened, Mourning wouldn’t be a questionable Hall-of Famer, he’d have been a lock, especially if the Heat won the title.
3) MJ’s pushoff on Bryon Russell. MJ himself has been documented as saying that it was a pushoff.
4) NBA referees period.
The truth: Las Vegas & American pro & college sports have been and are in bed with each other.

Not quite a conspiracy, but the NFL (and maybe the NBA) has rules where teams have to report injuries. It is nothing more than a gambling thing.

Of course Jordan pushed off. Just like he did 234896 other times in his career, just like everyone else does. Does anyone remember Reggie Miller shoving Jordan when he was on his way around the pick on an indounds play in game 6 of the ‘98 ECF’s, in which he hit the game winning three? If anyone has ever played basketball passed 5th grade they would know it’s a contact sport. You cant call every little hook and pushoff, especially in the closing seconds of the game.

You fucking monkeys, stop complaining. Go back to Africa and see how it is over there. You should be grateful you got so much from white people, you fucking ungrateful apes. Fucking animals.

Richard Wellner,Africa is the way it is because of your people being a parasite to the planet. Blacks built this country, but if we are to go back to Africa than make sure you take your punk ass back to Europe cause ya stole this land just like you do everything else.
December 19th, 2008 at 8:58 am
Richard Wellner says:
Blacks built this country? How the hell do you figure that? That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Africa is the way it is because monkeys are too stupid to run their own countries successfully. 600 BILLION DOLLARS in aid since WW2 and look at how it is? That’s the definition of stupid. Give any other race 600 BILLION DOLLARS in free money and watch what happens. Monkeys are monkeys, a drain on society, a drain on the planet. Go back there and carry things on your head.

JT Post 69 says it best.
As long as calls go against ya team its a conspiracy. When its the other team its kool. My team got beat by a bad call, but they missed 5 million free throws, get outrebounded a million to 1, got a miilion turnovers and get beat by 1, and the referres screwed you over. Poor and inconsistent referees hell yeah. Do I think Celtics/Lakers/all superstars get favourable calls hell yeah.
As long as balls don’t bounce ya way its a conspiracy. Although when there is no transparency you give rise to this. So hell yeah.
Teams tanking to get #1 draft picks. Uhhmm hell yeah.
MJ going to baseball is fishy.
NBA making sure certain teams get to the finals is fishy
I am not one to talk black/white but the OJ case is fishy
To Richard Wellner: back in the day they sent their prisoners/rapists/theives scum of the earth etc to the outposts. So if you were to go back to Europe guess where you will be going? Back to prison – truth.

Leech says:
Regarding OJ, I understand that it seems very suspicious that he is found not guilty of a murder most of this country who followed the trial thought he was guilty of, while getting a very steep sentence for a much lesser crime 14 years later.
But two points. First, it’s clear that OJ committed a crime in Nevada. He was an idiot for doing anything remotely close to being a crime.
Second, while the sentence was surprisingly long, I don’t think the LVPD or any other law enforcement agency determines the guilt of the accused or sets the sentence. It’s the police department’s job to make the arrest and obtain the evidence, the district attorney’s job to decide whether to pursue the case, the jury’s job to determine the guilt, and the judge’s job to recommend the appropriate sentence.
So it’s not just a matter of the LVPD getting the LAPD’s back. (Of course, it might be the matter of society not so subtly giving OJ an FU, but that goes beyond the law enforcement fraternity).

Come on now, I mean I’m a conspicary theory believer too but come on now!!…you gotta remember he did this in NEVADA!!..gotta know and be aware of where you’re doing things…out here in CALI cops will let us get away with having weed on us…but I won’t even take trees out of my room when in Reno and Tahoe just cause I know the cops don’t play out there get hella jail time just for having a blunt of some tree….gotta be smart when you’re doing your dirt…

The NBA is a Fortune 500 company. The bottom line is making a profit. All theories that certain games are fixed to obtain certain playoff and championship matchups, yes anything is possible. At the end of the day they are a major worldwide corporation.
