The Heat Need to Trade Shawn Marion
We’ve been hearing about Shawn Marion being on the trading block for a while, but now he’s supposedly really on the block according to an unnamed NBA source, cited by the Boston Globe’s Marc Spears. The Heat are reportedly kicking their negotiations into the next level to try to find a home for Marion after the team’s luke warm start.
Early on, critics were clamoring for Marion to be traded because he and Michael Beasley play the same position. However, there are two much better reasons to deal Matrix right now.
First, he looks like he’s lost interest in this team. After hearing that you’re headed out the door so many times within the first two months of the season, it’s nearly impossible to remain totally invested in the team. It doesn’t matter how much that team is paying you – it’s human nature. And that attitude was prevalent on Saturday against the Clippers, when Marion scored five points and grabbed nine rebounds in 33 minutes of action against a defensively-challenged frontcourt. His numbers are significantly down across the board, even though he’s now a 30-year old in the last year of his deal. That should be a recipe for him to put forth max effort, but it isn’t working out that way.
And second of all, with Dwyane Wade looking as good as anyone on the planet right now, the Heat need to pull the trigger on some moves so that their superstar isn’t burned out by March. Sure Wade’s figured out that a jumpshot helps to keep the wear and tear on his body in check, but he’s still laying it all on the line every night, even if he’s not diving into the first row every other time down the court. He’s holding up his end of the deal – and now Miami’s management, who said that their goal was to make big-time roster moves comparable to the ‘07 Celtics before this season, needs to follow through.

marion won’t help the heat make that big leap into the elite level.
that being said, he needs to be shipped for a good, solid big man who will shore up miami’s painfully thin frontcourt.

I’d prefer that the Heat trade Marion for a 2010-friendly center, i.e. Jermaine O’Neal, Brad Miller, or Marcus Camby. While he’s declined some, he’s still a very valuable asset to a contending team, and I’m sure there’s teams out there who wouldn’t mind having $17 million come off their books for the 2009 free agent class.
While 2010 is the Mother of All Free Agent Classes, there’s still good players to be had in 2009 like Carlos Boozer, Ron Artest, Shawn Marion, Lamar Odom, Allen Iverson, Mehmet Okur, Hedo Turkoglu, Rasheed Wallace, Jason Kidd, Andre Miller, etc. Not quite 2010, but still a bunch of damn good players.
At this point, I’d be happy if the Heat could acquire someone who can actually create their own shot, and not affect our 2010 capspace.

I also forgot to mention Jamal Crawford (assuming he opts out), and Ben Gordon.

How about no. Curry is fat, can’t rebound, and worthless. Thomas screwed you guys into a bad player and bad contract. He’s yours to keep. Enjoy.

The fact of the matter is Shawn Marion was never going to succeed in the Miami system, because it requires him to create his own shot by putting the ball on the floor, he can’t do that. So he’s ineffective in Miami. They should get rid of him ASAP, they never should have got him. Marion is only well-suited to do what he did in Phoenix, be an undersized power forward on a running team.

Big Ben Wallace, Sasha Pavlovic, the rights to multiple perogi’s and/or Big Z….but seriously, the only trade that really makes sense is Steph for Matrix, both of their contracts are too hard to match otherwise.

Shawn Marion, a great player, needs a run and gun offense, without it, he is just as good Matt Barnes! So trading him off are team would be ehh..unless we get a big man like Chris Kaman now that would be a good trade
