Top 10 NBA Expiring Contracts
Is Marion’s expiring contract on the move?Any NBA player that signed a contract as a free agent this summer should be careful where they send their holiday presents in the next couple days, because all 90 of them will finally become eligible to be traded today.
Until the trading deadline on February 19, teams will be looking to move players for one of two reasons: (1) To make a run at the Celtics, Lakers or Cavs for a championship this season, or (2) To shed salary and onerous contracts and continue their rebuilding process.
With either one of these goals as your team’s mission, expiring contracts will undoubtedly come into play as bargaining chips. Below is the list of the Top 10 expiring contracts:
Jason Kidd – Expiring Salary: $21,372,000
Allen Iverson – Expiring Salary: $20,840,625
Stephon Marbury – Expiring Salary: $20,840,625
Shawn Marion – Expiring Salary: $17,810,000
Mike Bibby – Expiring Salary: $14,983,603
Lamar Odom – Expiring Salary: $14,148,596
Rasheed Wallace – Expiring Salary: $13,930,000
Wally Szczerbiak – Expiring Salary: $13,275,000
Raef LaFrentz – Expiring Salary: $12,722,500
Andre Miller – Expiring Salary: $10,333,334
While I wrote about LaFrentz’s availability last week, outside of possibly Marbury, Marion and Miller, I doubt any of these teams would want to mess with their chemistry to make a move.
Who do you see moving before the deadline?

Not to jack this post, but how crazy is it that Aron can write, “make a run against the (Cavs)” and it not sound weird?!
To relate that point back to the article, why should the Cavs be worried about LeBron leaving when they have a great chance to win the chip over the next couple years, not to mention some expiring contracts of their own?! Or, in a perfect world, they could trade Wally for a young star and have a good nucleus for even longer?

7/10 of those contracts are in the east which means you can expect the eastern conference will continue to get better next year.
Did PHX pick up Nash’s team option for next year ($13,000,000)
I think Odom, Kidd and Miller still have an outside chance to see another 8 figure contract.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw this list. Only Iverson and even that may be a stretch.

dagwaller says:
Kidd undoubtedly earned that paycheck – debatably top 3 pg right up til this year, and maybe last.
Bibby and Sheed’s contracts were good when they signed them.
Andre Miller’s is surprising. He’s one of those guys who you think is underrated til you found out that he was rated pretty highly by the GM that signed that contract. Kind of in the Shawn Marion mold in that way.

Look at some of those portfolios. 3 of those top ten contracts belong to Jeff Swartz. Some of the clients and money going through these guys is insane.

Sheed or AI ain’t going no where. But I’d go after Marion if I was Joe D.

Lamar Odom’s stok has dropped too much to get enough value for him. Same with Wally.
Andre Miller earns his dough. Most consistent player IMO on that Philly squad.

Yea, but he’s not in the Top 10.

Yeah but i would imagine every PG that is better than him makes more $$ than him. Excluding rookie contracts.

Ansonious says:
I still think the Jazz should trade Boozer they get more bang for buck with Millsap and if Booze is going to sign with another team why not? It’s a win-win situation I also wouldn’t mind seeing Bargnani in a Knicks uniform he would be killing in D’Antonie’s system but I’m probably the only one who thinks it.

Tha Boddy says:
I’d pay Jason Kidd and Iverson that kinda money because of what they bring to the game…Kidd may be declining but isn’t that what happens when you get old and you lost your legs when you were young…Think about Jason Kidd if he could still get up alittle…triple double average for a second would be a breeze

JCARR says:
Trade sheed and odom while their value is still worh something
December 15th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Brown says:
Yes Ansonious, you are the only one who thinks that. Bargnani is awful. Put him and Gallinari on the same team, sign Darko and you can change the name of the Knicks to Busts.
Looking at those 3 guys, I have to wonder WTF GMs are thinking drafting Euros who have “skills” but can’t ball for shit. Those types of mistakes are franchise-killers.
December 15th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
dagwaller says:
Yea, Brown – just like Kwame Brown and Michael Olowokandi. What would they call that team? I would love to know what you think.

i don’t know about odom’s stock dropping. i’m pretty sure gm’s know dude’s still got game. he won’t get as much but he’ll make his. he’s stuck in the wrong system much like jamison was a few years ago with dallas.
