Which NBA Player Would Make the Best GM?
ChaunceyIf Chauncey Billups said that he was the NBA player most able to run a space mission to Mars right now, the fans in Denver would probably stand right behind him in agreement. So, when he says that he wants to work in an NBA front office some day, there’d surely be some support for him.
“I think it’s a tough challenge (working) behind the scenes,” Billups told the Denver Post. “You get to orchestrate, make moves and try to build a champion, and I think I know what it takes. … You’ve got to be a personable guy; you’ve got to be able to incorporate relationships.”
Even before Chauncey said something like that, he’d be an easy guy to peg as someone with a future in the front office.
About fifteen years from now, who would you imagine will be in an NBA front office that is currently playing in the League today?

John Stockton??? How about Mark Jackson?
Seems as if a good GM would be a former point guard. Like a quarterback, a PG knows where everyone needs to be on the floor and where they are going. He knows how hard teammates like their passes thrown, how high or low to pass it, and what their spots are. Then, there’s the whole chemistry aspect.
For some reason, players like Stockton and Jackson come to mind. 20 years down the road, maybe CP3 or someone like him?
I tell you who wouldn’t work…..A.I.!

I don’t see CP3 as a good gm. What about someone like Luke Walton, a role player, but he’s got such a high bball IQ, we know he has no game.

I don’t see guys like LeBron and CP as smart in that way, although they are very talented and on-court basketball smart. This isn’t a knock on either of them. But the better GMs in the future are probably more along the “intelligent team guy who would enjoy working behind the scenes” lines than the “superstar who tells his people to call your people” guys.

Steve Nash based on his court vision I’m sure he could come up with a sweet ass team and yes I already hear the there will be no defense speech yet I still think the two time mvp could make a good squad.

Paul Pierce. Most people probably wouldn’t agree but he’s so knowledgeable about basketball and importantly, about other players. He’s a basketball junkie who knows the scouting reports, can tell you about the strengths and weaknesses of a player, what kind of roles they need to play and his player comparisons are often dead on. He knows a lot about the history of the game. I think a GM or a coach has to be a good scout first and I think Pierce has a great scouting mind.
