Josh Smith’s Dunk of the Year

A lot of people get on Steve Nash for being a bad defender. But there wasn’t anything he could do about this. Josh Smith had a crazy dunk off an alley from Mike Bibby early this season, but I think this one trumps everything he’s done in the ’08-09 campaign.

    charging.

NOT charging, Nash moved. Reminds me of Young Webber over Mark Jackson (?) in the lane just taking a whiff of his crotch.

    thats NASHty dog…!

  7. that_dude says:

that dunk and the one tyrus thomas put on JO will battle it out for the dunk of the year….. quick dime, make a survey…

  8. GEE..."Square Dance Rap" says:

I am wondering why he is actually not in the dunk contest? Dude has had the highlights and all.

Anyway, what is up with Nash, you would honestly think he would get it by now. MOVE!

Then him putting his hands all the way up like he getting sticked for his paper ain’t helpin either.

    Just move Nash. Please move!

What can i say!? It’s all about being in the right place at the right time. Normally i like to wait till the playoffs for big dunks like that. But my boys needed a boost and i gave it to them. Sometimes i do this in practice with A’mar’e, what ever i can do to give my team a lift…

…FLOP! (nash’s flop and the flop of those nutz in his face)…J-Smoove isn’t in the dunk contest because he won it FOUR years ago-nothing to prove…

  12. Kobeef says:

This play illustrates why I hate the charging rule and flopping. Nash is clearly trying to abuse the charging rule and was in no way trying to defind josh on this play.

Stepping in front of someone when they have a clear path for a dunk in order to draw a foul is just below the “jump into the guy” after you get him in the air play as my most hated plays in basketball.

not Dunk of the Year, but nasty no doubt

This was great. Really pleased Dime posted this. (I went to Dime this morning just to see if you had it!) Nash did get quite a face full of crotch.

Smoove did win the dunk contest his rookie year and then was in it his second year too and had a bit of a disappointing showing that year. So he is done with that contest. This year, he still really hasn’t totally recovered his ups from the ankle injury early in the year (and his lack of blocks this year reflects it).

    Kobeef…
“Stepping in front of the guy” is a legitimate way of taking away that “clear path for a dunk”. It’s a tough call for the refs to make and they get it wrong a little too often, but if you have established position between a player and the hoop, why should that player be allowed to go right through you?

  16. mules says:

and the “jump into the guy after you get him in the air” play should be called as an offensive foul. If the defensive player jumps straight up, he has a right to land in the space below him…if you jump forward into him, that’s an offensive foul.

  17. J-Smoooooove says:

yo, Steve, tell me how my Nutz taste…

  18. haslem says:

how is this better than Ricky Davis’s dunk exactly?

  19. Kobeef says:

    @Mules
I know what the rules say but to me, taking-up space on the court should not be a legitimate form of defence. I wouldn’t suggest making basketball a meat-head sport but I hate watching a point get called off just because someone “pulled a Steve Nash”

Yah, I also don’t get why a player can jump into the defender with his shoulder and get sent to the line.

  20. jnuh says:

    easy call, it’s a charge.
nash was there a full second before the contact and that is what puts him backwards.
no flop. good defense. no basket.

although it was a nice dunk.

  21. bookkwormmaster says:

    @ haslem

I agree with you dawg. J-Smoove’s dunk on Nash was nasty but it was even sicker when Ricky Davis dunked on him. If you look at the vid Nash was falling back to the left as Smith’s body hit him while in the air where as Davis pretty much damn near jumped OVER Nash and put it on him. Plus Davis’ reaction compared to Smith’s kills it for him also.

  23. Bron42 aka Haters drink my bath water says:

um ya, it wasn’t a charge…nash was’t set and he didn’t fully get into position until josh was already in the air..and the rest was history…

hmmm…kobe nutz on nashs face, ricky davis nutz on nashs face and now this…

  24. Mark says:

Spur-of-the-moment call. Sick dunk, but I’d call charge. His feet looked set to me.

  25. Ernesto says:

    Charge.

  26. bigger_daddy says:

regardless whether it is a charge or not, i admire nash for standing up for whatever conequence. he saw that it was reminiscent of the KOBE FU dunk, but still went ahead and not go “Kyle Korver” on Josh.

    my two cents.
