I don’t get the mohawk thing. Chalk it up to a traumatic experience I had in middle school: Back when my “barber” was my Dad and the “barbershop” was a stool sitting in the bathroom at our apartment, one time I went outside the box of my usual baldie look and asked for a fade. Dad ended up giving me a cut that had everyone calling me “Mr. T” for the next two weeks. Soon after that, I started cutting my own hair.
Even in their heyday I wasn’t big into mohawks, so as they’ve made a comeback over the last year or so — you can’t watch an NBA, college or high school game now without seeing at least one dude rocking a ‘hawk — I’m feeling like an old man wrinkling my nose at a bunch of kids I don’t understand. Another ancient male fashion statement that never caught on with me is the mustache. Luckily that one hasn’t resurfaced, but now my Indiana Pacers are trying to make it happen. Read More »
If you had to ask me, the easiest ways to get yourself fired in this League is to a) lose a lot of games, or b) sit your stars. After Saturday’s 105-85 loss to the Celtics, coach Lawrence Frank is currently doing both.
“What I did had nothing to do with setting it up for [the future],” Frank said. “The decision I made was what I felt was right at the time. [I was] not trying to set it up for the next game.”
All-Star Weekend is right around the corner and everyone is trying to get in on the All-Star hype. Back in 1995 the NBA All-Star Game hit Phoenix, Arizona for the second time. The first time the All-Star Game hit Phoenix was 1975. Read More »
When LaMarcus Aldridgewas coming out of Texas, his pretty 18-foot jumper merited comparisons to his future teammate Channing Frye. But everyone who’s seen L.A. run the floor and nearly tear the rim off knows that Frye was a worst-case scenario for Aldridge. So Nate McMillan has a new model for his power forward to pattern his game after: LeBron James.
During the Cavs/Celts game, L.A. got a call from a “Private Number” on his cell. It was McMillan.
He asked Aldridge if he was watching the game, which was early in the fourth quarter.
“Yeah, I’m watching it,” Aldridge said.
“Nah, are you really watching it?” both recall McMillan saying.

The Nets should be playing in Newark, and not just for a few lousy preseason games as the team is proposing. And the 7-footer could be a major force in making them — to borrow his favorite Scrabble word — a Shaqtastic success.
Imagine the Nets finally giving up their Brooklyn fantasy and moving to the Rock with one of the all-time greats in uniform. Imagine Shaq, after he decides to retire, staying with the franchise as a part owner, his smiling face on billboards and his hulking frame sitting in courtside seats.

Jason Terry is quietly having the best season of his career, and he’s doing it off the bench. Averaging a career high 20.6 points, Terry is a virtual lock for Sixth Man of the Year honors as the NBA’s leading scorer among non-starters, and according to Rick Carlisle, he couldn’t be happier.
“He’s always like, ‘OK, coach. That’s great. I’ll do what you want,’ ” Carlisle said. “When you have an important player like that on your team, it really makes a difference.”
Okay, Mike Bibby! Bibby had a terrific fantasy night going for 31 points, 5 threes, 6 dimes, and 5 steals. He’s having an extremely underrated season and is up in almost every single category. Mike Bibby shooting over 45% from the field is a HUGE win for fantasy GM’s. Here are the other players making today’s (Almost) Daily Fantasy.
Joakim Noah - I know Joakim Noah has now had two pretty good games in a row (9 points, 11 boards), I know the center position is thin, and I know that someone in your league will probably pick him up today. Here’s my opinion – If you have an open spot or someone to easily cut, of course grab him. Noah has the ability to board and block shots. As I said yesterday, it really depends on how much confidence Vinny Del Negro is going to show in Noah. Also, remember, Drew Gooden has either been hobbled or out. So temper your actions wisely. I like Noah but I’m not a believer that he’s all of a sudden going to have consistent value. At least not yet. Read More »
With the Suns in town to take on the Knicks tonight, off-season NYC resident Steve Nash decided to drop by Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Nash talks about his Vitamin Water acting skills, playing with Shaq and his cameo appearance on the NYC streets…
With so much early-season talk about Jameer Nelson, Devin Harris, Rajon Rondo, Derrick Rose and (once upon a time) Jose Calderon for the Eastern Conference All-Star squad, why has no one mentioned Mike Bibby? Dude is throwing up about 16 points and five assists per and has the Hawks in fourth-place in the East. Last night Bibby dropped 31 points, six dimes, five steals and five threes on D-Rose and the Bulls, next to a 13-and-4 stat line for the rookie. During a key fourth-quarter stretch, Bibby hit the go-ahead jumper over Joakim Noah and then a three-pointer to give Atlanta a little breathing room, and later in the fourth, he picked off a pass and nailed another J that proved to be the dagger … ATL’s first basket came on a play so smooth, it’s hard to believe Mike Woodson drew it up. (At least it looked like somebody drew it up.) After Josh Smith (17 pts, 14 rebs) won the opening tip from Noah, he took off sprinting toward the rim coming from the left side as the ball fell into Zaza Pachulia‘s hands in the middle of the court. Zaza made a quick pass to Joe Johnson on the right wing, and without taking a dribble, J.J. found Smith for an alley-oop as the Bulls just stood there stunned … Read More »
