The big fantasy news is that Carmelo Anthony looks to have possibly broken his hand in last night’s game against Indiana. Amazingly, Karl put him BACK in the game in the 4th with a pretty decent Nuggets lead (he actually had a sick move to the hoop). It isn’t clear how long Carmelo will be out but obviously this is going to effect JR Smith and Linas Kleiza the most. Both players should be picked up in deep leagues, and although Smith seems like the obvious pick up in 12 team and under leagues, I’m not so sure that Melo’s injury will make Karl like Smith any more than he does now. It really could be Kleiza that picks up the most value. Here are some of the other players we’re talking about today.
Ty Thomas/Drew Gooden – Now it looks like Gooden will return to action this week, moving Ty Thomas back another notch into the extremely crowded and inconsistent Bulls front court rotation. Either Noah or Thomas really needs a new team. Is there a team that more to trade than the Bulls? A Bulls deal would have big fantasy implications. Read More »
I was just online looking for a clip of the new Taco Bell ad starring Darryl Dawkins and Vlade Divac when I came across this: From the 1981 Eastern Conference Finals, Celtics’ guard Cedric “Cornbread” Maxwell doesn’t just take out a fan in the stands, HE STAYS IN THE GAME after the melee. Amazing how you never hear about this, whereas nowadays he would have been suspended for the entire season and then gone down in history as a goon.
Maybe Yi should take a cue from Kevin Durant. In an honest move, Durant came out and said that his performance – and his team’s – doesn’t deserve the prestige of being mentioned in the same sentence as “All-Star.” Though KD wasn’t necessarily going to make the roster even if he kept his mouth shut, it’s cool to think that this actually carries some weight in his mind.
“That’s a big part of being an all-star, leading your team to victories,” said Durant. “Hopefully, before I’m done in this league I can be one of those, but right now I’m just trying to help this team turn it around and get better.”
It’d be pretty cool if every NBA player looked in the mirror and evaluated themselves as frankly as the former No. 2 pick.
Think back to about 12 months ago: Back when Michael Beasley was terrorizing all of college basketball, before Derrick Rose shot up the draft board and Beasley was a lock to go #1 whenever he decided to go pro. Back then, if someone had told you that B-Easy would do anything less than destroy Matt Bonner during crunch time of a close game, would you have believed them? Of course not. But that’s what happened down the stretch of Heat/Spurs last night. In what was overall a solid game for Beasley (15 pts, 12 rebs) — and while we’re at it, who would have guessed that Beasley’s first NBA double-double wouldn’t happen until January? — he scored nine points in the fourth quarter, but was also neutralized by Bonner on some key possessions that could have helped Miami pull out the win … Whenever the Heat got within striking range, somebody on the Spurs stepped up and hit a big shot to extend their lead. And in the last five minutes, it seemed everyone but Dwyane Wade (24 pts, 12 asts) was trying to shoot Miami back into it. When Wade did get his chance, swiping an entry pass intended for Tim Duncan (19 pts, 9 rebs) with 1:30 left and trailing by three, Manu chased him down and pulled off the Tayshaun/LeBron/J-Smoove/Crash rejection (cue the Manu fanatics vehemently pointing out that Manu kept the ball inbounds). Despite scoring 21 points and wielding a season-high nine assists, Carmelo Anthony fractured his right hand in the Nuggets’ 135-115 victory over the Pacers tonight.
Anthony injured his hand when the ball was slapped away early in the third quarter. He continued playing, but frequently grabbed at his hand. He had the Nuggets trainer check it out a few times when play stopped and then left for good late in the fourth quarter.
The Nuggets don’t know how much time ‘Melo will miss, but he will be seeing a specialist on Tuesday.
Off to their best start since their first year in the NBA, can Denver win without ‘Melo?
The Clippers had a busy day. After waiving Fred Jones and Paul Davis, they acquired Cheikh Samb and cash considerations from the Denver Nuggets in exchange for a future conditional second round pick.
While Samb didn’t play much for the Nuggets after he arrived in the Chauncey Billups-Allen Iverson trade, he averaged 12.4 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.8 blocks in 10 games with the Colorado 14ers in the D-League. Read More »
The Celtics should sign Fred Jones immediately. Seems that all the cheapo Clip Show did was give every other NBA team a look to see what Freddie still had in the tank and frankly, it was a lot (or at least enough). The Clippers decided not to pay Jones for the rest of the year and waived him today. He’s better than Tony Allen right now and Allen is essentially the C’s 6th man. By the way, the Clippers also cut Paul Davis, who is probably better than Big Baby right now as well.
