Q&A With The Bryant Bunch

As much as the Lakers are Kobe Bryant, they are also the sum of their parts. Before the game, I got a chance to chat with a bunch of the supporting cast that allow Kobe not to have to score 61 on a nightly basis. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that!) As the Lake Show embarks on their four-game roadtrip, I thought I’d ask Jordan Farmar, Luke Walton, Sasha Vujacic, Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum about travelling away from home… Read More »

Nike Zoom LeBron VI: All-Star Edition

Our boy Rich ‘Maze’ Lopez of KixAndTheCity.com posted pics of LeBron’s Nike Zoom LeBron VI All-Star sneakers. Since these dropped I have been saying that the Zoom LeBron VI right now is the perfect on/off court shoe. Read More »

Jameer Nelson Might Miss All-Star

One man’s pain is another man’s pleasure. After dislocating his shoulder fighting for a rebound last night against the Mavs, newly anointed All-Star Jameer Nelson will have an MRI today and it’s likely that he’ll miss several weeks.

With this in mind, it got me thinking: who will take his spot in Phoenix? Clearly you know that I prefered Ray Allen to make the squad initially, but the way Nelson has been playing this season, I really couldn’t complain. Read More »

Jerryd Bayless’ Best Game Yet

Portland’s 20-point comeback last night against New Orleans can’t just be attributed to Chris Paul‘s departure from the game. Even when CP3 was in the game in the first half, Jerryd Bayless came off the bench and helped to close the gap, contributing 4 points and 2 assists within the final four minutes of the half. (Granted, CP responded to Bayless’ run by sticking a 25-footer.)

But once Paul came out of the game for good, Bayless really took advantage. Down 70-53 with two minutes left in the third, he went berserk. From that point forward, Bayless tallied 15 points, 3 assists and a rebound, while only committing one turnover. Read More »

Garden of Dreams

As a sports fan, every time you purchase tickets to a game, as opposed to sitting on the couch and tuning in, you hope for the spectacular. You don’t just hope your team wins, but that there’s something memorable that happens. A no-hitter, a hat trick a hail mary.

Last night at the Garden, I got exactly that when Kobe Bryant set the MSG record with 61 points. Breaking Michael Jordan‘s record of 55 (a game Kobe remembers watching) and Bernard King‘s record of 60, Kobe put himself in a new echelon.

Sure you’ve seen the highlights on SportsCenter, and read about it in countless newspapers and blogs, but to be there last night, amongst the 19,763 capacity crowd on 33rd Street & 7th Avenue, you knew what you were in store for. Read More »

(Almost) Daily Fantasy – 2/3/09

I looked at two fantasy “rankings” from just last night’s games and here’s the interesting thing – neither of them had Kobe as the top fantasy player of the night. Statistical programs aside, is that true? No chance. The stat programs look at every category and with zero rebounds and only 3 assists Kobe got pushed to 3rd or even 4th but Kobe went out and WON you two categories on the first day of the week. Unless, something dramatic happens, the 61 points should be enough to win you points for the week and the 20-20 from the line is definitely enough to win free throw percentage for the week. Our cbssportline head to head league gave Stephen Jackson the top performer. Jackson had a phenomenal night with 33 points, 11 dimes, 5 boards, 4 steals, and 2 threes but come on. Last night, on the court and in the fantasy world, Kobe owned the stats. All that being said, there were some injuries, comebacks, and performances that need to be addressed. Chris Paul – The season of injuries continues with CP pulling up lame with a groin injury. Stay tuned for the MRI results later today. If CP is going to miss significant time, Antonio Daniels would once again have some fantasy value. Read More »

Every Point of Kobe’s 61

Here’s all of Kobe‘s 61-special from last night at MSG. As much as we all love Mike Breen and Clyde Frazier, this should only be watched with Joel Meyers and Stu Lantz – the Lakers broadcast duo – providing the commentary. Luckily, this clip has L.A.’s crew calling the action.

Westside Slaughterhouse

OK, here’s what was supposed to happen Monday night: The Lakers, still reeling from the news that Andrew Bynum could be done for the season, zombie-walk through a loss to the Knicks at MSG where Josh Powell and Lamar Odom are the only guys who seem happy to be there. Meanwhile, with their toughest competition in the conference significantly weakened, the Spurs would roll into Oracle Arena and go all James Harrison on the Warriors just to show what the rest of the West has to deal with from here on out … Here’s what actually happened Monday night: The Spurs, for the most part, were uncharacteristically bad in every aspect of the game you’d expect them to dominate (coaching, defense, execution) and had their hands full with Golden State down to the wire. As for the Lakers, everyone forgot about Bynum for a few hours while Kobe Bryant turned in one of the great single-game performances we’ve seen over the last decade … Kobe dropped 61 points in only 37 minutes (19-31 FG, 20-20 FT), breaking the MSG scoring record previously held by Bernard King (60). Q-Rich initially drew the assignment of guarding Kobe, but when it became very clear he was overmatched, Wilson Chandler took over and spent the rest of the night (with a little bit of Jared Jeffries thrown in) being made to look like an overly-tatted Byron Russell. 61*

Kobe Bryant set the Madison Square Garden single-game scoring record tonight with 61 points. Hitting 19-of-31 from the field and 20-of-20 from the line, Mamba made everyone forget about Andrew Bynum‘s injury status, at least for a couple of hours, and the Lakers won in a blowout. Oh, and he only played 36 minutes.

Early in the first quarter, right after I’d turned the game on, I sent an e-mail to one of my boys who works for Nike that said only, “Q-Rich is guarding Kobe. ‘THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE AN EXHIBITION!!” Read More »
