Could the Knicks make three deals today? According to ESPN, sources say the Kings have offered Kenny Thomas for Nate Robinson and Jared Jeffries.
If the Knicks could move Jeffries, it would clear another $6.8 million in the summer of 2010. The Knicks would have to give up Krypto-Nate and eat Thomas’ $8.7 million salary next year, but if 2010 is the goal, it’s probably worth it for the Knicks. Read More »

After the Knicks and Thunder swapped Malik Rose for Chris Wilcox, it appears what was rumored to be a three-team deal is now two separate, but done, trades. The Bulls making their second trade in two days sent Larry Hughes to the Knicks for Jerome James, Tim Thomas and Anthony Roberson.
Financially, the trade is a wash for both teams with Hughes making $12.8 million this year and James and Thomas making $12.2 million combined. With a lack of scoring at the shooting guard position since New York traded Jamal Crawford, if Hughes is motivated to play, he should contribute right away off the bench for the Knicks.

After a rumored three-team deal, the Knicks and Thunder have swapped Malik Rose for Chris Wilcox. Becoming available once the trade for Tyson Chandler was voided by Oklahoma City, Wilcox is earning $6.75 million this season, while Rose is making $7.65 million, both players with expiring contracts. According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, word out of New York is that the Knicks are back on the block.
It is not immediately clear if this would be two separate trades or a three-way exchange, but I’m hearing that Oklahoma City’s Chris Wilcox — who went back to the Thunder on Wednesday night when the Tyson Chandler trade was rescinded — and Chicago’s Larry Hughes are New York-bound.
To complete the transaction(s), Oklahoma City would get Malik Rose and Chicago would receive Tim Thomas, Jerome James and Anthony Roberson.

Right now, it looks like the Nets would do just about anything to get Vince Carter‘s $33 million remaining off of their books.
An ESPN report even quoted two of these executives, each of whom stated that the Nets are trying to “give Carter away.”
But even so, it doesn’t look like Carter is going to be on the move. Read More »

Realizing that the Celtics aren’t going anywhere, and that Cleveland’s best chance at keep The King in their throne is winning, the Cavs are looking for a miracle. As one of the most aggressive teams on the market today, the Cavs are now looking to add Shaquille O’Neal.
Several reliable sources have told me they have offered Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic (only $1 million guaranteed) for Shaquille O’Neal. The Suns may want to keep Amare Stoudemire but now have abandoned their plans to play slow down and Shaq is in the way. Also, it would save them millions next season because Wallace’s contract actually decreases next season and Pavlovic is not fully guaranteed.

According to ESPN’s Chad Ford, the Kings have dealt Shelden Williams and Bobby Brown to the Timberwolves for Rashad McCants and Calvin Booth. The deal would give the Kings two players with expiring contracts and allow them to get Brown’s 2009 salary of $736,420 off the books for next year. For the Wolves, the addition of Williams would help replace Al Jefferson, who’s out for the season with a torn ACL. Read More »

After the League sent out a memo this week that had the luxury tax is potentially dropping to $69.4 million, the Wizards (with Gilbert Arenas, Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison on the books) are worried that they’ll be over the luxury-tax line next year by more than $6 million.
That’s led Wizards’ GM Ernie Grunfeld to call the Knicks’ GM Donnie Walsh to discuss a deal that would send Jared Jeffries back to Washington along with Malik Rose in exchange for Etan Thomas and Mike James. While clearly this is a move with the bottom line in mind and not the win/loss column, James would be a nice scoring backup PG for Chris Duhon and Thomas would add some depth to the Knicks’ frontcourt. While everyone is concerned with the Summer of 2010 and the economy, the real people that should be worried are the free agents this summer. Not only will teams be trying to save their money for the following year, but with the possibility of a smaller salary cap, they’re going to be less likely to invest big money and long term.
With that in mind, the following unrestricted free agents should be very worried: Allen Iverson, Ron Artest, Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion, Andre Miller, Lamar Odom, Rasheed Wallace, Mike Bibby, Drew Gooden, Ben Gordon and Stephon Marbury.
As wallets stay closed, I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of these guys sign one-year deals with contenders, making for a very interesting 2009-2010 season, and an even more interesting summer in 2010 when they would join LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Amare Stoudemire, Paul Pierce, Chris Bosh, Ray Allen, Tyson Chandler, Manu Ginobili, Richard Jefferson, Joe Johnson, Tracy McGrady, Yao Ming, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Redd on the open market. While the Bulls are definitely looking to deal, a source close to Kirk Hinrich said the Bulls have turned down a trade proposal that would have sent him to Minnesota. While rumors were swirling earlier in the day that Hinrich could be headed to the Wolves for Jason Collins and Brian Cardinal, the Bulls reportedly rejected the trade, which would have been a straight salary dump of Hinrich. He appears set to remain in the crowded Bulls back court, barring new developments.
